Why do people with skills like yours call themselves "hobbyist"!? You are defenitely a professional!

I've been a 'professional' before, it broke me. Art's always been my little escape hatch from the world, and doing it as a job left me nowhere to escape to. Would love to be able to compartmentalize it, but for now, would rather be a hobbyist, keep what I love for me so I can keep loving it--if that makes any sense.

It does, I totally understand what you mean. Better keep a hobby than lose a passion which would be a shame regarding your skills

Thank you so very, very much for the favorites! It's nice to hear from you again and to visit your intriguing gallery! If you are perhaps interested in seeing what Jeremiah was like when he was alive,aΒ month ago or so a high school and university friend of his contacted me after many years and put 2 of Jeremiah's short interviews( he was 21 at the time) on youtube., to share with other artists on DA. Since then I have made andΒ added several slide show videos of his art work, animations and special photos of him. I would love it if you would take a look! Just go to youtube and search for his name, Jeremiah Kauffman or go to his page on DA and I have the youtube codes listed. I hope you will visit him, it means a lot to me and would makeΒ Jeremiah and I so happy!Β

You're very welcome! Said something akin to this before, but that one in particular reminds me of a Ray Bradbury cover; not any one in particular, just in general Also dig the border/framing you use on your pieces like this. Don't know how much work you put into that aspect, but it's amazing how that one little detail can add so much depth to an already striking work!

Oooo I'm very glad you like the border! Yes, I've
been trying to put more thought and effort into those,
actually. Sometimes a lot of time gets sunk into the
border process since I often have to start them from
scratch like I did on this one

First off, I don't want to step on any toes, I know how shitty it is to pour your heart and time and effort into something only to have it overlooked as 'simple,' but in this case it's good for them to be 'simple.' I'm certainly not saying don't spend time on em or just phone em in ( they're awesome! ) but making them too involved runs the risk overpowering the piece they're supposed to be framing. I'd say however much thought you put into this one was just the right amount You could also try doodling some random border designs (like not related to any piece in particular) then see if any of your current ones fit your pieces when they're done. Just my two cents. But again, keep that IN! They're Tony the Tiger! (They're great!)

I get you on this, totally. It's sometimes
a fine line to create a good looking border that
doesn't overpower the work it's framing. I have
a lot of patterns I created in case I want a quick
simple kind of a pattern too On this was it
was actually an effect that I'd meant to do for a
while, but I needed to work it out logistically
I'm really glad you like it

Haha!- you're very welcome and VERY THANK YOU! Love your work- it's all amazing, though I have to admit I'm most taken with your b&w acrylic works- not just because they're frickin awesome!- but also I'm sorta partial to b&w to begin with. I've been trying my hand at acrylics myself (though without nearly as much success) and your works are perfect benchmarks of the level I hope my stuff is able to hit someday, ya know when it grows up. Cheers

Upon perusing your gallery I believe you'll hit that benchmark in about ten minutes if not sooner!
I think most greyscale and black and white illustration derived from limited budgets of publishers, it is far cheaper to print books with monochrome interiors.Β As there are usually more interior illustrations in books than the often one color image on the cover, I got a LOT more practice with monochrome.Β I think it gets less credit or attention than color, and I think that's a shame because monochrome can express things that color cannot.Β I think, in part, it has to do with not conveying all of the information that color would, it leaves more room for the imagination to fill in the details.

Heheh. Would've fav'd more but was on the downward slide of my night- you have a prolific amount of stuff to go through, and I like to give things the time they deserve. May not show while I'm carpet-bombing deviants' pages with favs, but in reality I'm building a backlog of stuff to peruse at my leisure or for when I'm looking for ideas to steal inspiration. For instance, I really like the breakdown you had for 'How to Spot an Alien.' I'd been toying with a similar technique for composition with my ink drawings, and had been thinking about using something similar (washes etc) to get a different feel- but now I have to if only to see what I can do with it.
Not sure if that makes a whole helluva lotta sense, but whatever.
Anywhoos, keep up the great work and I'll keep staring at it with my eye holes!
