You know which tool is the magic wand right? Select it and at the top there is a box called Sample All Layers. Make sure that this one is checked.
Then use the magic wand to click on parts of your image that you want to shade.
You can then press the select button at the top of PS, go to modify and then expand ~1 pixels or more depending on how thick your lineart is.
If you have very thick lineart then you can expand it more than 1 pixel. This ensures that you get most of the empty spaces between lines that are too close to be selected by the magic wand.
Afterwards you can fill in a gradient that you want for shading or you can use a brush to shade and it won't fill the whole canvas. =3
Be sure to put it a layer below your lineart.

If you don't like this method then you can simply use a brush to shade and then erase around the lineart afterwards. =3

Yea, I usually expand by 1 or 2 pixels for my pictures. My lineart is usually about 3-4 pixels thick. You most likely have to look for empty spots after colouring though. This method isn't perfect and I usually have to fill in spaces that I missed. ^^'

Ooh you totally should! I use polymer clay, mostly the brands Sculpey and Fimo. Fimo's harder than Sculpey, which can be a bit annoying, but when it's been squished enough it's ok Also Premo, which is a sub-brand of awesome colours by Sculpey, works well too.

Usually you can buy that at Michael's AC Moore, if you live in the US. c:
