Hi there!! Sorry for such a late reply, but I appreciate you reaching out to me! : )
I know this may sound very typical & repetitive but practicing a LOT has helped me improve my pixel art tons.
As for my work process, I always start out with a sketch on a really small canvas--usually no bigger than 200x200 or 300x300 if I'm pushing it. I think the beauty of pixel art lies in the fact that it's very small, therefore very controlled and has to be done with utmost precision. After sketching is lining the pixel--probably the most tedious step for me. It's pretty much the same as lining regular digital art! Though, there are some things that you should keep in mind if you want smooth lines, which can be kind of hard to get at first when doing pixel art. @/Riukki has an excellent tutorial that I used to follow when I was first starting out pixel art; it covers pretty much the basics of it: Pixel Tutorial .
Once you get the basics down you can move onto some more "advanced" things that'll enhance your pixel art! One of the things I like to do is anti-alias some of the lines to make things look a lot smoother. This is a really good explanation post: Anti Aliasing .
Besides getting all the basics down, the most important thing to do is to keep experimenting to find out what you like & don't like. My pixel art now looks drastically different from when I first started, and it's only because I found a style that I liked and continued to play around with it!
Another thing I like to do is just look at other people's works and get inspired by them. It really helps!
