Hi Jan!
I haven't been on DA for a while and just saw your message. I'm glad you're enjoying your 5D2! And I also appreciate you sharing your comparison, I think it is important to know the difference between cameras. However, a few months ago I decided to opt for 7D, as I found myself needing a new camera ASAP, I couldn't bear the AF issues with my old camera anymore (I had an entry level 400D, and I still have it because I just don't care for selling it) and I didn't have enough money for 5D2. I love my 7D, because it's the best I ever had and it is a very good camera in any way, I do feel that the ISO range of 5D2 could have given me much more abilities. Oh well, there'll be time for something like 5D2 or 5D3 when I get enough work opportunities to save for it
Best regards,
Sveta.
Ps. I see some really great pictures in your newest deviations! Off to check them out

Hi Sveta,
I am glad you like my new photos. I really enjoy the full-frame sensor and wide angle lens.
Regards,
Jan

Hi Jan.
My message may seem strange as I don't know you, but I've just read your question on Alex Rentsch's profile about Canon Eos 7D and 5D MkII and was just wandering which one did you buy after all? As I'm myself torn between the two cameras. As I shoot mostly portraits it would be wiser to get the 5D I understand. But I am so sick with the 9 point AF system! And there is also quite a difference in price that is putting me off the 5D. So I would like to know your opinion. Thank you.
Kind regards,
Sveta

Hi Sveta,
I did not get any answer from Alex, but the fact he used 7D just little and now is using 5D2 all the time says a lot
Anyway, I tried both bodies again. This time for about 50 shots with both lenses I own (17-40 f/4.0L and 70-200 f/2.8L). 7D was quickly out. Is is a good camera of course. It had a little bit more supportive grip than 5D2 (noticeable only with heavy 70-200), the blackout when shooting was so short and the shutter sound so slick...it just felt like camera for pro sports shooters...but still no competition to 5D2. With the full frame sensor I felt like both my lenses were finally attached to a body they were designed for.
As regards the AF itself, I tried both in a dim light conditions and the difference in AF speed was hardly noticeable. The centre point on 5D2 is as sensitive as any AF point on 7D. Plus, as the 9 points on 5D2 are so poorly distributed, one would need to focus and recompose anyway...so why to bother with outer points. Plus, the AF of 7D is so complex that using 5D2 with its centre point and recomposing is as quick as selecting the specific point/zone on 7D and then shooting. Moreover, when I checked the pictures at home, I found 5D2 more successful in terms of in-focus photos percentage. Photos from 5D2 were with one or two exceptions perfectly focused, whereas 7D missed around 20% of shots with 70-200 lens ("missed" does not mean completely out of focus, but 10 cm in front or back the subject). Maybe my fault, I do not know, but I have used the same wide 3.2 aperture with both bodies.
Anyway, I saw too many perfectly focused photos of hummingbirds done with 7D to be claiming its AF is not good just after 50 test shots. But in my view, the sophisticated AF and other fancy features of 7D just cannot rival with 5D2 and its image quality and the fact it is a full frame camera (my 17-40 was finally 17-40. One look through the full frame viewfinder and it is really hard to get back to APS-C.
So, I end up in position buying either 5D2 next month or so ...or waiting for 5D3. I will not try 5D3 before its price drops under EUR 2,500. I do not want falling in love with such expensive toy
And one final thing. My cousin asked me to be his wedding photographer this weekend (silly guy as I do not have any experiences with weddings, but he thought that shooting landscapes from a tripod is the same as flashing weddings). He booked some pro guy (or lady) for about 30 minutes and I did the rest of the wedding. The point I raised this is that I clearly realised this weekend that if some camera body is largely used by wedding photographers (like 5D2), its AF speed, sensitivity and precision will definitely cover my needs.
PS: You gallery is so nice.
Best regards
Jan

Thank you very much for such a detailed reply. This is much more than I expected. Yes, unfortunately the best gear like 5D3 is very pricey and unless you're rich or make money of your photography you're most likely to be not in position to buy these cameras
Full frame doesn't really matter to me as I do not shoot landscapes, just portraits most of the time. As much as I enjoy and am fascinated by landscapes, I just don't have the vision. I know a lot of people who say that full frame is a whole new world, but I really do think it doesn't mean much in portrait photography. AF is what matters to me the most. And image quality, of course. So I guess I'll have to wait and see myself. Maybe even try both those cameras before I make my final decision.
Thanks again for replying. Your advice is much appreciated and I will bear those things in mind
Best regards.

The post-processing you are using is just amazing. And quite unique.
