I have visited your gallery before. Back again. I enjoy your submissions to "steppinout"
To be honest, I am not sure what I want to say, but I feel compelled to to say something.
Your gallery intrigues me. Because I sense a struggle. I don't know what it is all about but I think I sense what some of it is about.
Most people, when they make art, are obviously seeking some architype. But I can't figure out your architype. I suspect it is based in painting though, concept art maybe, not photography.
It is because I see your whole struggle with background/composition/ambitious meaning.
But you take less care, technically.
This might be the result of any number of things including:
a) the ideas are just coming too fast
b) you don't think enough of any given idea to take care to polish it on the technical level
c) you are trying for a deliberately casual look
d) you are a novice and are working at your technical limit, while taking things a step at a time
e) it is really only the ideas that interest you
f) you take the camera as a means only
I would like to believe a) but I don't totally. Many of your shots feel a little forced to be honest. Yet the good ones are very good.
I hope b) isn't true but I mention it because I think you need to remember that this can be an unintended effect
I believe you are tempted by c) and sometimes pull it off
If it is d) then you are like me
I strongly suspect that e) and f) is the truth. And I think this is what so intrigues me. Because, of course, I am a shoe fetishist. And so I want to encourage you to keep hard at it until you get said, what ever it is that you are trying to get said. But I humbly suggest that you explore he technical side further and use it more actively in your quest. You take some care setting up your shots. Take three times as much. I believe you have a lot to say.
This was a difficult post for me to write.
My name is Jim

Hi Jim,
Most of these shots are done in my living room which does not have great natural light and I have no studio lights. I have to set up my compact camera on a tripod and use the remote control facility. In the meantime I set up all the props and backdrops myself. It can be pretty time consuming and sometimes I just give up trying to get the βperfectβ set up.
Some ideas are definitely more formed than others. Sometimes I just muck around hoping something will work. It usually doesnβt but occasionally something pops up.
I am also divided by the purpose of this site. Is it my best work or is it a random collection of shots that I take once in a while. Due to the time constraints I am under I would like it to be the former but it has turned out to be the latter.
I do have a darker side. It is difficult to express this element of my personality to those that surround me. It is easier to discuss the trivialities in life than addressing how pointless it, sometimes, feels. I used to have a landscape photography site but people started leaving comments expressing how many of my photos looked bleak and full of despair. I guess we only take pictures of what we see. One day I will tire of this place, delete my gallery, and move on. In the meantime I hope you enjoy what is here.
Thanks for the thought provoking comments and the time involved in formulating them.
Jacqueline.

Jacqueline,
Now I understand better.
I know my comments were critical in some ways but getting that "off my chest" had the odd effect of letting me see the strengths in your work a lot more clearly when I when back through to make individual comments. So, selfishly, in a way, I am glad I did it, because ultimately it lead to my being able to enjoy your gallery more thoroughly.
Understanding the technical constraints you are working under also creates a context within which to understand them as expressive things. The best of your work is pretty damned provocative I find.
I truly understand the time consuming aspect you refer to. I used to spend entire nights trying to document my paintings in order to send the slides to galleries, then drag my tail into work on two hours sleep. Was it William Carlos Williams or EE Cummings that has that line about dancing alone and naked in the night?
These digital art communities are a rather strange phenomena. I also find that the "strategy" for my gallery shifts around. Hmmm. Maybe a weathervane series? Is there an emoticon for "self-deprecating-tongue-in-cheek?"
My graduate thesis show was a series of very bleak still life paintings. Cold light. Empty table. One plate of what looked like cheese. I did not mean them to be so in a conscious way. They just ended up there. ( Oh, and they featured dropsheet backgrounds )
