Haha yeah it's a great story! I totally forgot about it, but every once in a while an image of three dogs with enormous eyes popped up in my mind, so I rediscovered the story a while ago

Do you always draw from reference?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

grandmommy In reply to jcurr87 [2012-12-09 16:27:55 +0000 UTC]

No, I really practice a lot on drawing without reference, but I don't post them on DA because I think they are really bad or I never finish them... I just bought a wacom tablet three weeks ago and before that I didn't really draw for like 4 years so I have to get back on track again Maybe I should upload some of my own work to get some good feedback though!

jcurr87 In reply to grandmommy [2012-12-09 16:30:18 +0000 UTC]

I definitely would, honestly. You sound a lot like me though. I was on hiatus for a while with the whole drawing thing until I saw my buddies tattoo work. We used to have drawing competitions when we were kids, and he kept going and I didn't.

When it comes down to it you should really post all of your work, you never know what kind of feedback you'll get. If you don't mind, check out some of mine too

grandmommy In reply to jcurr87 [2012-12-09 16:36:51 +0000 UTC]

Yeah it's just like they say 'practice makes perfect' isn't it? Like you I was fed up with drawing, mainly because I can't always draw what's inside my head and I get frustrated, but also because I didn't have a good tablet.

I'm gonna upload some of my own work, you've convinced me!
I've checked out your work, I really love the strong contrasts you use!

jcurr87 In reply to grandmommy [2012-12-09 16:43:12 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Exactly right, I'd get pissed off because I couldn't get little things right, like fingers, and poses and such. But you really need to know the anatomy of the body before you tackle something like that you know?

And yes, no matter what, practice always makes perfect. Can't wait to see your other work!

grandmommy In reply to jcurr87 [2012-12-09 16:50:12 +0000 UTC]

yeah it's reeeaaaaally frustrating! My biggest problems are shading with the right colours and drawing faces. At school I had anatomylessons which were really great, but faces are so full of emotion and the anatomy of a face is so complicated, I never get it quite right...

jcurr87 In reply to grandmommy [2012-12-09 16:57:49 +0000 UTC]

Honestly, when you;re on your penciling phase in the beginning, as a guide you should also pencil in where you're going to shade too. Shading is usually honestly not all that complicated, but it was something that I used to over complicate with over shading.

I'll tell you the secret to it. Before you even begin to think about shading period, make a layer with an arrow pointing in the direction of where your light source is coming from. From there, use your knowledge of the anatomy of the body and facial muscles to plan where your darker areas will be. Remember, anything that you want to 'pop' will need to have a highlight, where as anything with an indent - like the triceps in the back of the arm - will be shadowed because they are indented before they come out to a head. Look at the triceps on my 'Bane' drawing.

Once you master this, shading is easy. As far as coloring, you always want to make sure you're just going darker and darker on your palette, depending on the intensity of the shadow.

Hope this helps!

grandmommy In reply to jcurr87 [2012-12-09 17:08:38 +0000 UTC]

yeah this helps a lot! I think I worry too much about the colours I use to shade with, instead of focusing on where the shadows need to be. Just like you say, the biggest problem is over shading. When I look at other pictures I always notice how 'simple' the shades usualy are, sometimes it even looks more realistic because the shading isn't too complicated. I always worry about using a lot of colours because skin has a lot of colours, but keeping it simple with a few colours and varying between opacities and darker/lighter shades does the trick as well and doesn't make the figure look like it has a black eye

thanks!
