Thank you for your comments and the watch! It's really nice to know that you like my works. I've browsed your gallery and I'm impressed with your development! How long have you been drawing? I'm asking because I'm also self-taught and we are of nearly the same age

Just a correction to what I've said: I was into drawing since I was like 4 or 5 maybe but I started drawing more complex reference at the age of 14 and started drawing portraits at 15

So just like me, maybe I started doing portraits a little bit earlier I'm curious how our works will look in 5, 10 years time! )

Oh my gosh, I always think about that!! I've seen mind blowing works here on DA and I always think if I'm gonna be able to do stuff like that sometime like how am I gonna pick up the proper technique and methods to do them. It's kinda awesome not knowing how your skill will shape up

marika-k In reply to gerd324 [2014-02-19 15:38:02 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I hope we will master our techniques and see huge difference between today's works! Now I laugh at my drawings that I drew 5-7 years ago

It's really a pleasure to see your works! I can sense you're very keen to details, too. They're very sharp and neat!

Thank you so much for appreciating my development!! I started around 15, I think? And basically.. I really sucked. I thought the great pencil drawings I saw were just plain impossible, you know what I mean? But I never stopped searching for answers on how to improve my works. I remember looking at particular drawings that time for an hour or so just to get a grip on how I think the artist did it and try it myself. Then, I dunno, maybe after quite sometime of experimenting, I got very close to the proper way of doing things

In my opinion, I really think it's so much better to learn things by yourself because you get this unimaginable sense of achievement in the end when you look back and see how far you've come, right?

marika-k In reply to gerd324 [2014-02-17 16:35:34 +0000 UTC]

I started drawing before knowing deviantart, so I made everything by myself, without looking at other drawings... and after discovering DA I was soo inspired and motivated to become better and better at it! Step by step I discovered techniques, all by myself just like you I've never attended any drawing classes etc. And I must say that it was worth to experiment end discover everything - now I see my development and this is the biggest satisfaction of this hobby! ) I think that we have similar views on drawing, so keep on doing this - I'm looking forward to see your next works!

Me, too. I started drawing cartoons but this time I included their shadows. That's how I think I got started. I created my dA account 2 years after, I think, because I thought it would be like the new Friendster that time, you know? Sharing photos to everyone and all but I didn't know that it's purpose was to share art works to people.Β

I never attended any class, too, but one thing I really wanted to learn is how to properly do hairs. I'm not bad at it but I can't say I've mastered the art of doing hairs. Once I do, I think that'll be one big step forward for me. I hope I'd be able to learn that myself in the near future.

I'm really excited on how things will unfold for both of us. I hope you would still be around after a couple of years and let's see how our works will improve.

I'm working on a new one right now and I'll be really proud of myself when I do finish this one convincingly. Looking forward to seeing yours, too!!

Well, I created my dA account here about 3 years ago because previously I had seen one of the Polish pencil artist having her own profile with incredible drawings and I thought that I could share my works with others, too

When it comes to hair, I also have some problems with drawing it. You know, if hair are straight, shiny it's not hard to draw them. It starts to be more complex when hair is curly, messy, not so shiny. I must practice it!

I think that I will still upload my works here, I love having everything in one place.

I'm also working on a new drawing, but I don't have much time to do it and I'm waiting for an inspiration! keep drawing, I'm waiting for your new works!

Interesting galery, think you suffer a litlle bit from the fact that everything has to be perfect. I mean you can try sometimes to do more β€œrelaxing” with hand, to put more feeling/energy into picture, and put this optimisam and smile from selfportret what you have on first page into new pictures. So they can be more alive. This is next step for you. For now you are on a very high level to reproduce world around self. Very nice enviable stage. Excelent feeling for details, coposition, tone scale… Photorealisam is a piece of cake for you.

Ok will check you and waiting for your next improvements.

Wow! Here's a fact; when I was at your age, I don't even know how to shade!! I only draw outlines like cartoons, you know? From the looks of your gallery, you're well on your way in becoming so great! Just keep on drawing and try to observe some works of others. I bet you're gonna be doing great stuff soon! I don't see why you can't

thanks so much for the lovely comment on my drawing "fight club". I was browsing your gallery and I love it! And I wonder, how can you obtainthat beautiful effect Β - shading is pretty smooth, unlike on my drawings, whre it's rough and what paper do you use? It's awesome!

gerd324 In reply to erin-hippie-everly [2014-02-11 14:59:21 +0000 UTC]

Hey,Β JaΕ›mina! You beat me on commenting on your profile. Thank you so much! Anyway, I use a paper called "Eggshell Drawing Paper". I dunno if that's actually the name professional artists call it but that's what it says on the plastic. Lol.Β

My way--and other artists way, too, I found out--of eliminating the rough feel of the shading is blending it with soft tissue. I'm sure you've heard it. Works like magic!!

I still have a long way to go but I'm really glad you liked my works. You have some incredible things going on on your profile, too, you know!! I'll be looking forward to your next works! Β

erin-hippie-everly In reply to gerd324 [2014-02-12 13:58:59 +0000 UTC]

thanks so much for the help!
So far I was using cottong buds for blending, but I need to try something new, since it didn't give 100% effect I wanted to achieve. I will try with tissue next time, thanks! And I'm grateful for recommandation of a paper. I'm really not acknowledged with that kind of things, si I'm glad for every piece of advice from experienced artists

Waiting to see your new works! peace!

Me, too! If you have the time to look at my Gallery > Scraps, I only used cotton buds for everything, as well, and yeah, they don't really come out convincing. As for the paper, I don't really know a lot of things about them, too. Lol. I think there's something better than the one I'm using (and recommended to you) but it works just fine for me and I hope it'll do good for you, too. I'm glad I can help!

Good God man, and you are impressed that my drawings look like pictures? I have been trying to get this much facial contrast on mine and it always looks weird. Damn, you sir, are a fantastic artist, and yes, it is sad that you have been out of it for so long. Well, better late than never. Keep up!

Maybe you need softer pencils such as 6B to darken your tones a little bit. I bet that'll add insane details to what is already been a very good collection of yours! Yeah. It really sucks.
