Danmei is a kind of BL too, oly this is from China~
Danmei is quite popular in my country now ^^, a lot of people draw danmei pictures
Danmei is actually a kind of novel, usually the story takes place in the modern or ancient China, sometimes it happens in different countries like america, there are also many types of danmei, too. Maybe you can search it on the internet, i don't now how to translate chinese into english. In Vietnam, we translate it into Hán-Việt ( the words is in vietnamese but the meaning is from chinese) to read.
I guess not many western fangirls know about this
They actually cosplay danmei ^^
here are some danmei illustration [link] (this is from an artist called ENO), you can find some of them on deviant : Heise, Feimo, Valleyhu...some can't be found here though. There are many styles, semi-realistic or manga style~ and can be drawn using many instruments~
