I found someone else who does Gender-bending stuff!

Although it's the reverse for me, in this case.

I haven't seen many Female->Male Gender-bending, DA or otherwise. Very nice stuff. It's not often that this can be done as well as you do.

Hahaha tack sΓ₯ mycket fΓΆr anmΓ€la!

(Yes I know my Swedish is awful but I can only learn by sucking so hard that people take pity on me and correct me haha. )

My favorite part in Puss-in-Boots is when he crawls into the sack. That was a splendid idea! I also love what lured him in.

Also, picking a curvy 'Boots was a sweet idea, sistah!

caltha In reply to pussinboots [2004-10-15 16:11:38 +0000 UTC]

Well I don't need to take pity on you, the only mistake you made was leaving out the n in "anmΓ€lan".
Actually, the princess being lured into the sack is a drag king, so I guess it's technically a "she", albeit in a fake moustache.
I initially picked as Puss-in-boots, but she cancelled in the very last minute and made me force my sister to take her place. I'm happy with the result though, Sanna would have made a more salty puss, she can do all those funny faces, but Lina was fine too, especially with her pink hair and all.

In regards to your "Little Mermaid" series --

I love the idea of it. I remember a film project similiar to this that I saw while in Berlin. It involved a girl who had gills and was obviously more comfortable in the ocean but had a lover on land. There was a certain mystery given to the whole situation. Then there was the van they drove that towards the back spiraled in on itself like a pupa, like a seashell.

However, in terms of your project I wonder several things. First off the different photo sizes throughout feel ragged. This is a story, and a story has a consistent frame, no? Also, I feel that the story would be better if perhaps it was cut down somewhat. I think it would be more concise, and more mysterious.

There are very few emotions throughout the piece, so why not focus on them? The actions of the Prince can be read into very well, but why is he so blank? He doesn't need to stink of his feelings, he need only have a micro-emotion that looks as if it somehow weaseled through his defenses. Does he feel no joy at his shedding his clothes?

I think this is a fantastic idea but that it isn't completely finished. That, or I'm just not seeing your vision properly, which is very possible.

I'd love to know your thoughts in return.

Skeptically,
Pierrot

caltha In reply to pierrotlunaire [2004-07-31 19:12:54 +0000 UTC]

In the original story, there is little joy. The mermaid is drawn to the prince although it causes her nothing but pain. Perhaps, in my version, the prince isn't very joyous either? Perhaps he's afraid of the water, but forced to follow the mermaid? Perhaps he can't live underwater, just like the little mermaid can't live on land without having her tail transformed to legs, perhaps he never finds the mermaid but drowns, like in the old stories about mermaids? I want the story to be open for interpretations...

Actually, I instructed the model about his expression twice, first to look surprised in one shot, and then to smile at the mermaid in one. Those were the shots I think turned out the worst. In the rest, I just instructed him about what to do.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pierrotlunaire In reply to caltha [2004-07-31 19:44:01 +0000 UTC]

True, the original story is utterly tragic. What I read into it is the significance of your focusing on his undressing. Have you ever read the French Lai Bisclavret? In this story a knight must take off his clothes before he can transform into a werewolf, and must put them back on before he can again become human. In that sense the clothes are the expectations of society put over the baseness, wildness, of the true human condition.

Here, the two lovers join, but why? As much as ultimately their attraction will cause them only pain -- why would they bother if they didn't feel something for each other? What do they feel? Why? We have the mermaid who can not join society, who can not wear clothes, and the Prince, who must strip his societal self to join her. What do they symbolize? Shouldn't she express concern about his clothing? Awe, befuddlement, curiousity?

Intrigued,
Pierrot

caltha In reply to pierrotlunaire [2004-08-01 09:29:04 +0000 UTC]

Perhaps she expresses nothing? Or nothing but curiosity, amusement, desire, like he was a strange and beautiful toy? And when she can't reach him she just forgets all about it and leaves? (Somehow like the prince treats the mermaid in the original story, like a toy or servant, not a human or lover) Because she's not a human, she's a mermaid, she has only instincts, no emotions. Perhaps this has nothing to do with love, at all, only allure. I don't know.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pierrotlunaire In reply to caltha [2004-08-01 16:23:04 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, allure makes more sense. However, why as a mermaid should she be devoid of love? Love among social creatures is instinctual. It's not one of the emotions we're born with (fear, disgust, happy, sad, etc.) but rather a system, a web, of all those emotions into something beyond the sum of their parts. The capacity to love is something we're born with. Mermaids may live in the sea, but they live together, no? They're not quite animal, not quite human. I do think it's good to ask what makes them non-human, but I don't think the answer is or should be soul...

Thoughtful,
Pierrot

Well, that's your view on love and on mermaids...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pierrotlunaire In reply to caltha [2004-08-09 16:05:18 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, which I only meant to suggest for commentary, but I guess it's not open to discussion?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

caltha In reply to pierrotlunaire [2004-08-26 21:08:45 +0000 UTC]

What is there to discuss, really? My commentary is "that's your view". That's your view, that's mine. What else could we possibly do, agree on how mermaids "really are"?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pierrotlunaire In reply to caltha [2004-08-26 21:26:52 +0000 UTC]

Sigh. No. I wanted a discussion on differing theories, critical thinking, etc. You wanted only to express your view, and defend it in your piece as the "correct" view. If we're at an impass, it's from your lack of willingness, not mine.
