Very different, exciting, strange, and amazing. I can't believe I've been here for 5 weeks already! I have been getting better at Japanese, especially with speaking, which was kind of my reason for coming here, so that's great. I've also been experiencing quite a few (very small) earthquakes, and two bigger ones. Speaking of which, if you happen to read/see anywhere that a massive earthquake shook all of Japan yesterday evening our time, that's not entirely correct. There was indeed a very big earthquake, but it was a few hundred kilomenters away from the coast and happened at nearly 700km depth, so we did have shaking walls for a minute or so in Tokyo, but it wasn't that bad, and most of Japan only had a tiny bit of shaking. No tsunami risk, either, so everything's good.

Oh, I'm glad you're having a good time!! The earthquake sounds sort of scary though - at least it wasn't too bad by the sounds of it. I hope there aren't any more though!

I'm good, too, thanks! But I'm kind of starting to panic a little since I only have five weeks left in Canada and there are still so many things I'd like to visit/see in the Vancouver area. And days just seem to disappear like nothing.

Yeah, I'm really not looking forward to it. This is why I want to buy my own place, so I'm in control of when I leave it and stuff...
But yes, I found a place! I've signed the contract but need to pay the deposit. 

Ooh, yes, that must be quite hard! I hope you get to visit and see a few more places before you leave. What do you have in mind (not that I know anything about Vancouver!)?

That's great to hear!

Things like exploring Stanley Park a little more, visiting Granivlle Island with its many artsy shops and great market more often, taking the Sea Bus to North Vancouver and going back in the evening to see the downtown Vancouver skyline at sunset, going up to Whistler Mountain (not to ski though, that's far too expensive), spending a day in Victoria , have a picknick somewhere along English Bay ... and so on

Oh, those all sound amazing! Whistler Mountain looks fantastic. I've never actually been to a snowy mountain, or, indeed, any snowy place for a holiday! I keep suggesting it but we always go somewhere familiar or warm instead.

I went to Granville Island twice last week, once to go to a workshop algenpfleger held at the art university there, and once to buy presents for my family and friends for when I get back to Germany. I ended up spending way too much money.
We generally have a snowy winter, and sometimes go skiing, too, since back home we're close to the Alps, but for a holiday we also usually go to a warm place.

Ah, see, I've never been skiing and I'd quite like to try it! I think I'd be awful at it (and snowboarding too), but yeah.

Oh yes, you definitely should, skiing is so much fun! I can assure you I'm rubbish at snowboarding (I tried it once and that didn't end so well... I'm just too used to having two boards beneath my feet, not one. )

See, I feel like I might be better at snowboarding just because all the ski poles and stuff look quite confusing! At least with a snowboard there's nothing confusing, just the board.

Just one board instead of two and sticks. It's so hard for me to imagine how it might be for someone who can't ski, because I basically grew up with it - it's like riding a bike for me. Anyway, winter sports are a lot of fun, you should definitely try one if you get the chance.

I guess it's because we're so close to the mountains that a lot of people learn skiing or snowboarding early on. It's very popular to take a short vacation in winter and go skiing/snowboarding with the family for a few days. We only do day trips though.
