I QUOTE FROM NO-SWORD:
"Wikipedia's delightful article divides D&D's Japanese history into four ages: "Pre-Translation", "Shinwa", "MediaWorks", and "Hobby Japan". The Pre-Translation Age was one of truly legendary nerdery -- men and women without internet connections of any kind, importing at great expense books in an foreign language and studying the rules they contained for pretending to be an elf. Their cyclopean achievements make the otaku of today look like keg-chugging frat boys. This golden age lasted from the dawn of D&D in the mid-70s until 1985, when Shinwa ushered in the twilight of the ur-nerds by releasing the first Japanese edition of the game.
The Ages of Shinwa lasted almost a decade, and is now remembered fondly for its bloopers: "plutonium pieces" for "platinum pieces", "reggae armor" for "leather armor" (i.e. ゲ→ザ, an easy enough error for a typesetter to make). This was also the period when HAGIWARA Kazushi threw a Beholder into his manga serial Bastard!!, but had to give it limbs and rename it SUZUKI Dogezaemon for the trade.
The Shinwa Empire was reportedly brought low following a miscalculation on its part regarding the willingness of Japan's gamers to switch to Advanced D&D, and it was three years later in 1994 that MediaWorks seized control of the property. The keystone of their localization effort was YASUDA Hitoshi of Group SNE -- anime nerds will recognize them as the force behind Record of Lodoss War, which began as a humble transcript or "replay" of their D&D campaign. This was to be a localization by RPG nerds for RPG nerds, but, alas, it was up against an implacable enemy: Japan's late-90s "Winter Age of Tabletalk RPGs", a market contraction now generally attributed to post-Bubble malaise and competition from computer games."IT'S SO DAMN POPULAR THAT JAPAN MADE AN ANIME SURPRISE SURPRISE

Seth used to be a common choice for sons born after the death of an older sibling--as Seth was born after the death of Abel. The Puritans were quite fond of this practice.

When they were both done and sated, lying next to each other more like children stargazing than two men intimately entangled, he began to wonder if it was all that he wanted.
Most of the time, the answer was absolute. Yes, I want more, or No, this is all that is necessary. He knew that he was ambitious, but what more could be conquered beyond another's body? Nothing. There is nothing beyond the power of flesh.
Albion was not ambitious enough to conquer a soul, and he would pretend it was from satisfaction than from cowardice. Only a fool would launch an invasion that they could not carry through to the end and win. He was not a amorous siege engine, and Seth was not his; even now, leg-to-leg, eyes glassy in the starlight– was not his. But his body was, and that was all he would let himself have.
The next time, Albion wondered if he was a romantic at heart. He wondered if underneath the cold steel of draconian principles and churning gears of fear, he was soft– a pursuer of aesthetics, champion of emotion. He longed for a simpler time, when there was not a war, when there were no obligations to blood, a place where practicality did not always have to rule his head. Even more strongly, he longed for the curve of Seth's neck and the clasp of his fingers. He had that already, why was he asking? He could grab Seth's hand any time he wanted. What more did he want? Nothing. Wish not, want not, make do. It was all Seth's fault, for implanting such childish thoughts in his mind. He was too old for this.
He had sent Seth away by having the gall to reject him, but it had been a roundabout way of punishing himself; the easiest way to make a human heart bleed was to hurt its loved ones, and Albion always had a hunch it would work on himself. Did it qualify as emotional suicide, to intentionally follow through with what you knew would hurt you most, or was he being overdramatic in holding his emotions on a higher platform than anyone else's? He had already said the words once – most ardently – his own eloquence disgusted him – but he said them again, to the lone darkness of his cold bedroom.
"I love you."
His own voice did not feel real, so he pretended it was not real. When he was alone, he could trick himself into pretending that such soft, true, genuine feelings were simply a figment of his own imagination.
"Did you love him? That boy," Lady Hartford stirred her tea with a steady hand and a cool eye, a constant, hovering reminder that such traits had been reluctantly passed on. The words felt dirty, from her mouth. Albion was sure she knew nothing of his frighteningly strong, painfully clear affection that still swam somewhere under the steel, but something darker and insidious; she understood love as possession and legal contracts. She was mocking him, rooting around in his heart for more ammunition, and he did not ask how she knew. It was easy to lie, as it had been at least a year– maybe more, maybe less.
"That one? Hardly. I suppose we were friends."
He had made a tragic mistake, in uttering this; it reopened the wound, and reminded him that he had not just lost a body. There was more of Seth, to lose; more of him that had once been in his possession. His wild laugh and the horrible face he made before he joked, eyes bright. Friendship cannot be possessed like a body can, his mind sneered, and you were never friends.
"More akin to colleagues, I suppose."
He was wise enough now that utterances of love likely frightened him and simultaneously bolstered his ego; repeating them again would surely chase him off. Albion could restrain such bothersome emotions well in the daytime, with distractions abound. By whinging at length about the girls Seth brought home and the way Seth put things away without the labels facing out and how Seth did not put his books back in alphabetical order, he could pretend that the latter two weren't endearing and the former as jealousy-inciting as his tone hinted. Evidently he was a better actor than he thought, because most people fancied the two of them wholly platonic.
Rather silly, the lot of them. It was easier to wish not, want not when he was needed, as he knew he was. Trying to possess Seth's friendship and wild laugh and awful taste in women was like trying to hold water in his hands – difficult, but very, very possible, if you press your fingers together hard enough. It was possible when he clutched Seth's hand in his clammy one, trying to possess it, trying to keep everything from dripping out.
Going through with it now felt different, and he realized it was because their hands were made equals in the face of war; both rough and scarred, from gunmetal and clips. Seth was not pretending to be asleep; his chest rose and fell naturally, and it was the only reason Albion breathed anything into his shoulder. "If only you understood how terribly I love you, MacNeil."
"You actually think I'm going to grade those papers sober?" Albion demanded, wrinkling his nose. Seth had the wonderful tendency to make him forget that making faces was unbecoming of a well-bred man. The idiot rolled over like a puppy, and Albion could hardly blame him, what with the impressive gouge marks still bruising on his back. If there was an award for such a thing, he surely should have won it long ago.
He wasn't exactly expecting a reply to his rhetorical question, so when he heard Seth's muffled voice, he took a minute to give Seth an extremely grumpy look. What was he playing at, being incapable of detecting sarcasm and trying to cover it up?
"I love you," Seth said, quite muffledly; Albion paused, suddenly feeling like he had been whacked by a ton of bricks. Seth was not drunk, and unless he had begun hearing voices, it would be impolite not to take such words at face value. Although his face struggled with impassivity, the words remained, warming his veins. How horribly fast his steel heart was beating, but how naturally the reply came.
"... I love you, too."
