The sun scattered his rays far over the forest, seeking to caress every budding leaf and elongating stem and gently encourage their chlorophyll production. Delicate transparent tendrils sprouted from the soil, still damp from the morning dew, and stretched their small arms toward the morning light. But the bullies of that dark deciduous forest, the looming oak trees, formed a hermetic lattice overhead with their thick boughs, blocking any vestige of light from trickling down to those tiny destitute plants.

Jackson the Tall chuckled as he watched Bobby, a small shoot who had withered for days, finally slump into the ground and release his tenuous grip on life. Jackson derived a particular pleasure from slowly draining these ambitious underlings of their newborn energy by denying them even the smallest sunbeam. Unable to perform photosynthesis, they could only run so far on the nutrients contained in their seeds. As they were deprived of the sunlight's beauty, they had not the willpower to perform either etiolation or nutrient uptake from the soil, and shortly after germination, they always died.

Jackson's attention was caught by the sight of a microscopic green tip wriggling its way aboveground, responding to the gibberellins coursing through its little body. Jackson gently probed beneath the soil surrounding the shoot with one of his massive roots and discovered its main radicle, a blind probe forcing itself downward in response to gravitropism. Jackson surreptitiously tied the radicle into a knot, quickly so as not to draw the shoot's suspicion. Absorbed as it was with breaking free of the dirt, the shoot noticed nothing.

The process of emerging is a long one, and exhausting to watch. Jackson was relieved when the shoot finally reached air and gained some awareness of its surroundings. It peered around, seeming perplexed. Jackson waited for it to notice him.
