Long time no see, huh?

I've been good. The boyfriend is good. School is good. Et cetera. Art has kind of been put aside because of school but it's still apart of my life. Nothing too exciting really.

And you? How are things going?

Digital art makes me sick. It's become the "Guitar Hero" of the art world. You don't need any talent in mixing colors, in mastering strokes, or covering up or absorbing mistakes, and everyone is doing it.

I'd love to see these people pick up some watercolors, pencils or markers and really do some artwork. The masters must be rolling in their graves. Why does everyone like it so much?

corelila In reply to ROwenThompson [2009-09-30 21:31:29 +0000 UTC]

I'm sorry, but I have to comment. I do a lot of traditional as well as digital art, and it's just as labor intensive as traditional. In some ways, it is more so. It will also teach you things about lighting, contrast and color that you just wouldn't learn in real life. There's something about seeing how colors can relate to each other that teaches you things.
It also does teach you about mixing colors. You are tempted to use the brightest, boldest colors when you first start out in photoshop, just like when you first start out with crayons or watercolors, or whatever other medium you are using. Eventually you see the subtleties in color and you learn how to use it well. I've been able to carry over what I learn in photoshop to traditional art for sure. You learn strokes as well, though granted not as much. As for the undo and warp tools, they just make it a more relaxed medium, not necessarily a lazier one. (something digital takes twice as much time, for sure.) To blend something smoothly digitally (and well, not just using the burn tool) takes a lot more work. Mistakes are much harder to cover up in digital art than traditional, and you can really get to the little details, whereas with traditional, you need a larger canvas.

A lot of digital artists are traditional artists too. It’s unfair to judge people based on medium. Mediums are connected. You learn things no matter what. It’s nothing like guitar hero.

ROwenThompson In reply to corelila [2009-09-30 21:57:02 +0000 UTC]

I see what you say but it's just a disagreement in philosophies and honestly, I respect you, I am sure you are the real deal, but you are the first digital artist who has said it is difficult. Other professionals have told me they use it because it is much easier and faster.

Clicking "undo" is 100% less anxiety provoking than putting a marker to a paper. There is zero risk. That's the point I make.

Please, I mean no disrespect. It is just one hack artist's(my) opinion.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

corelila In reply to ROwenThompson [2009-09-30 22:05:26 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I see. I didn't mean to rant at you. It just sort of sounded like you were saying digital artists were just trend hopping. And yes, it's a way less stressful medium. No harm, no foul.

ashleighashleigh In reply to ROwenThompson [2009-08-26 20:11:38 +0000 UTC]

I know what you mean. Digital art is okay but it's nothing like the real thing. In real life there isn't an undo or a blending button. That's kind of why I don't like photography I think there isn't anything that they really created themselves (there are quite a few exceptions though).

ROwenThompson [2009-08-24 21:14:49 +0000 UTC]

I am still drawing shit. I think I'm going to just give up using color. I just don't get it, how to use it.

Your great-grandmother's portrait is coming along great.

ashleighashleigh In reply to ROwenThompson [2009-08-26 02:42:03 +0000 UTC]

Don't give up, just take a short break and work on it in a week or two. Getting better isn't about doing things you're good at, it's about doing things that you need to approve on.
Life would be boring if you only did things that you were good at all the time anyway. : P

You are so right, Ashleigh. I think I'm starting to get it. I am a long way off though. And as you say, it's no reason to quit, only a reason to work harder.

Yes, I did do another anime drawing. I want to make it one of my last. I really do. But I know it isn't.

Could you do me a favor and tell me what I did right or wrong the past few drawings? I would really appreciate it and I value your opinion greatly.

You and two other people who are honest with me here are helping me get better far faster than if I was ignoring you or getting constant panegyrics like I get on facebook sometimes.

ashleighashleigh In reply to ROwenThompson [2009-08-27 20:35:48 +0000 UTC]

When I said you should try harder things it doesn't make it to where you can't do any of the things you're good at. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to some some anime every once in a while.

You're so great. You didn't even need to respond but you cared enough to make sure I didn't bog down and spin my wheels unnecessarily in a project I'm not into.

Thanks for that.

How is your work going?

I started another realist work. A large one at 24x18.

You're welcome, I try to help when I can.
18x24" are fun, I think going big is the way to go especially when learning.

My work is okay. It's mostly school work though. For my painting class I'm working on a watercolor using lines and in drawing I'm doing the basic shapes and shading them to make them 3D (circle to sphere, box to cube, etc.). And I'm almost finished with my Great Grandma.
I suck at painting and landscape so that's not going so well. The shapes are boring but I'm good at that. And grandma is coming around nicely. : )

ROwenThompson In reply to ashleighashleigh [2009-08-30 11:34:08 +0000 UTC]

Your flower watercolor was really nice. You had vibrant colors, and the vase had nice symmetry and roundness. I wanted to try and do some mixed media with watercolors, but I got too frustrated and figured I better try to be solid in one thing first.

You have trouble drawing landscapes, or just painting them?

Yeah I find flat planes are difficult. For some reason it completely throws off my proportion.

ROwenThompson [2009-08-14 19:33:28 +0000 UTC]

Picked up some Conte pencils at the store today. I tried them while I was there and I must say, it was pretty cool. It's similar to colored pencils, but at the same time, much more vibrant and even. I hope it works!

I also am putting more marker in my work. It's OK, but I'm still deciding whether it works.

Grade my work if you can when you get a chance. Hope vacation was nice! I mean, the times when yo' moms didn't get you lost.
