What the verse is saying is, you don't put a Christian or Jew in charge of Islamic institutions. We don't expect a Muslim to be charge of the church or synagogue, do we? The artist is victim of bad interpretation of his intention and should not have been fired. Marvel is well known for artist doing this kind of thing through the decades and never fired any of them until now.

Syaf's use of the verse, however, is a veiled reference to Governor Purnama, who wasn't in charge of a mosque or any "Islamic institution". He was in charge of Jakarta, a city in Indonesia. He's Christian and an ally of the national leader Widodo, and the hardline Islamists who want to turn all of Indonesia into an Islamic state (like Banda Aceh already is) didn't like that, so they trumped up charges of blasphemy to oust him.
But Marvel normally champions moderate, feel-good representations of Islam, as depicted in the Ms. Marvel series. So what was different with Syaf? The difference was anti-Semitism. The "Jew" over Kitty Pryde's head and the verses quoted. The comic book industry has always had a heavy Jewish presence, with almost all the major characters of DC and Marvel created by Jewish writers. You can't expect anti-Semitism to get a pass in a situation like that. Kamala Khan doesn't talk smack on Jews.
What Syaf possibly has against Jews, I don't even know. There aren't even any Jews in Indonesia anyway (Wikipedia says maybe 100 or so).

you make a blanket statement about the mercilesness of Jews, then claim you are not an antisemite, and have many jewish friends. you would do well to try to understand that you are, in fact, an antisemite, by word and by deed, and that attacking haters, or apologies while defending what you did, are useless. don't go to a radical muslim extremist for solace. you need to seek out a counselor or therapist, maybe even a rabbi, to understand how hateful you are and how you don't have to be. screw your talk of peace and love, its a charade that even you have fallen for. just be honest and admit you are hateful person, bigoted and essentially racist and antisemitic. only then can you hope to redeem yourself.

It is a shame that he did this because he was someone who had a brilliant career! No matter WHAT his views are, he had NO RIGHT to put them (in any way) into a comic. Comics are one of the few things that cross barriers that are otherwise formed by religion, race, creed or colour of someone's skin! And now because of him......this too is ruined! Makes me wonder just how long he has been doing these subliminal messages. Ardian dude you are BANG OUTTA ORDER!

I legitimately pity you. I pity that you feel you have to live your life subscribing to some awful rigid structure that demands you hate certain groups of people. That you feel there is some being out there whose existence you can't even be sure of telling you that you HAVE to do this.
I pity that you feel like you have to throw away a legitimate and incredible career that so many other people are busting their asses to get into, so you can spread a message of hate. I pity you that this is something you take for granted.
