# About me

❝Remember what I said;❞
France was a land, England was a people, but America, having about it still that quality of the idea, was harder to utter - it was the graves at Shiloh and the tired, drawn, nervous faces of its great men, and the country boys dying in the Argonne for a phrase that was empty before their bodies withered. It was a willingness of the heart.

Marienne honestly couldn't remember the last time she'd seen Alfred. He was always buried up to his neck in work and errands and coffee runs. Since all Arthur did these days was grumble about Brexit, Marienne was forced to take action. Both of them needed a little break, but Alfred was first on her list. She would make up some other excuse for the trip later. Shortly after arrival in New York, she armed herself with fresh bread and fine French wine and a small bag of pastries. The man's home wasn't far, and luckily she had an idea of where she was going in the vast urban center. Not bothering to care what time it was [probably about lunch], she stepped up and knocked on the door, eagerly awaiting the younger nation to answer in surprise.

((Nice nice!! I'll give the best starter I can))

----------

Matthew knocked on his brother's door, glancing down at the small bag of groceries. Maybe Alfred wouldn't answer and he wouldn't have to worry about communicating with him. Matthew was no good at socializing anyway.

"Maybe- maybe he won't answer..?"

Matthew knocked again, thinking about ringing the doorbell. He didn't like the sound of it, but he slowly reached up to ring it, pressing the button.

"Good God, don't answer, Alfred.."

annuit-coeptis In reply to 1pCanada-APH [2019-05-10 04:56:36 +0000 UTC]

Unfortunately for him, Alfred answered.

He blinked as he took in the sight of his brother standing at the entrance; not that Matthew was any less welcomed in his apartment, but unless he missed it Alfred couldn't recall anything about his northern neighbor swinging down south for a visit.

"Oh hey-- ain't this a surprise," he said as he moved to lean across the doorframe absentmindedly. "What's brought you coming over 'round these parts?"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

1pCanada-APH In reply to annuit-coeptis [2019-05-10 11:03:22 +0000 UTC]

Matthew kept in a groan.

"Alfred, I just wanted to visit. I brought some snacks."

He did not want to visit: Arthur had made him. Matthew hadn't come by his brother's place in so long that it was apparently a 'problem'.

"It's fine if you want me to leave. I wouldn't want to overstay my welcome."

He hadn't meant to sound snarky, but his irritation was beginning to show. He swallowed his pride, rolling his shoulders. He shouldn't be rude to Alfred; it wasn't his idea.

"May I come in?"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

annuit-coeptis In reply to 1pCanada-APH [2019-05-10 16:15:10 +0000 UTC]

He furrowed his brows upon his brother's response; all he did was ask a question. After all, he sincerely doubted anyone wanted to be around his presence at the moment-- at least, not without diplomatic concerns in mind. Brothers or not, Alfred was completely aware of their inclinations to serve their nations first. It was only natural. Unless he had said something wrong in the moment, in which case that wouldn't surprise him nowadays either.

"N-no, it's fine..." he murmured, rising from his position against the door frame and rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly. "I mean, I was just curious, that's all. 'Figured you were busy, y'know? But I wouldn't mind you coming in, it's just... erm... don't mind the mess, would you?"

His last few words were wrapped in sheepishness as he spoke; usually he did his best to keep his apartment organized and tidy, but that too was failing him nowadays.

"Ah, merci, and I won't. My place is only clean because of Kuma."

Matthew let out a nervous laugh, feeling somewhat bad for snapping at him earlier.

"I'm sorry for being rude. Everything's been hectic with my secretary, since he got pneumonia a while back and now he's back on the team, but.." Matthew heard his voice trail off, realizing Alfred probably had stopped listening.

"Anyway, hadn't Arthur taught you manners?" Matthew teased, "don't make me stand outside all day."

annuit-coeptis In reply to 1pCanada-APH [2019-05-16 16:53:13 +0000 UTC]

"Nah, it's fine. I get it," he replied, shrugging and waving a hand dismissively. "Stress can make just about anyone testy, y'know? I mean, of course you know. But what I'm trying to get at's that I... well, know."

After all, this was the United States of America Matthew was speaking to-- stress just came with the package. Nor was he unfamiliar with being the subject of another nation's less savory sentiments; that, too, was simply part of the experience with who he was. In most cases, he would have shoved the thought at the back of his mind-- dwelling on his errors was never something he enjoyed doing, and his usual strategy was to either justify himself or feign a lack of responsibility. That wasn't so easy to do, nowadays.

The change in tone came as a surprise, but it was more than welcomed on Alfred's part. After taking a moment to absorb it, he gave a snort as a smile of jest crept upon his lips.

"Bold of you to assume the ol' drunk's got manners." he snickered. Regardless, he moved himself away from the door frame, stepping back a bit before he pulled the door open further. "But if you're gonna get on my case about manners, 'least you can do is to keep me from waiting."

"Hmm.. it is, isn't it?" Matthew grinned at Alfred. He watched him move out of the way, allowing Matthew to invite himself in, making sure he steered clear from stepping on any clutter. Last thing he wanted to do was damage his beloved brother's belongings.
The poor nation of Canada felt like he was warm, but that was possibly because he lived in the Northwest Territories. He was used to freezing temperatures and warm temperatures were almost foreign to him. He took of his jacket, tying it around his waist. He hoped it'd help cool him off, although the jacket was incredibly thin. He finally allowed himself to speak again, hoping he wasn't bothering Alfred.
"Do you need any help going through all of your work? I know I came by uninvited, so I figure I'd try to make it up to you, Alfi-" Matthew bit his tongue, trying not to use the childhood nickname, "-Alfred."
Matthew suddenly felt something in his heart. He, for whatever reason, knew something was wrong. Maybe he learned how to sense the mood after being forgotten about for all those years, maybe it was something he could always do. Something was wrong with Alfred, not just the fact he was a country, struggling to get its act together.
"Al, you know I'm always here for you, okay? I know we've had our disagreements and our fights, but we're still brothers. Please, don't be afraid to approach me for help. No one deserves to have to handle burdens on their own," which was something France had taught him. Then again, Matthew was a hypocrite and tended to bottle up his emotions. He was talented in hiding his emotions, even from his own eyes.

Brave-Scotland In reply to annuit-coeptis [2017-11-29 04:52:32 +0000 UTC]

Ah, Christmas. The most wonderful time of year, supposedly. Alistair had to admit it had its charms. But there was also a certain level of frustration that went along with it. He had some free time from work, and decided to take a random vacation. Throw a dart at the map and buy the next plane ticket out of Britain, and away from the bushy-browed dickhead that lived there with him. Of all the places, New York City was his destination, and he gladly took it. Perhaps he could find out some ideas for gifts this year, along with the other blonde in the family: Alfred. Though, it would be like finding a needle in a haystack in this place. Letting out a heavy sigh, he pulled his scarf a little tighter, and trudged on.

After endlessly wandering the streets, on a whim, he strolled down 5th avenue, bumping into a few upper class snobs along the way. Glaring holes in their backs, he stopped to light up a cigarette. "Wonder what four eyes is up to these days," he wondered aloud, and stepped off to the side to watch the people go by. They were far more interesting to him than the luxury goods behind glass.

( whipped up from 5 minutes of research on NYC :3 )

The chilly winter air of New York City was a welcome change from the frustrating nature his work had taken as of late;  it cleared the clouds gathering upon his thoughts for just a brief moment of time, allowing him to soak up the sights around him (this city, his city, this beautiful, crazy city--). The holiday cheer had finally come, bedazzling the city that never sleeps with even more lights to celebrate the season. It was a wondrous feeling, to walk down the streets and avenues amidst the yuletide glow of the evening, and comfortable air was an added bonus too; he figured he should savor it, knowing just later in the week that a cold snap was soon to hit. Enjoy now, worry later... words that resonated with him as of late with the contemporary mood.

A flash of bright hair flashed upon the corner of his vision, causing Alfred to stop in his tracks in a moment of curiosity. It seemed familiar, and a glass in observation towards the supposed direction confirmed his suspicions. Alistair was not one he would expect to cross the Atlantic right out of the blue, and the curiosity encouraged the blond enough to approach him from behind. He caught wind of the other's words-- 'four eyes', the comment bringing a slight frown upon his lips as he placed a hand right upon the other male's shoulder.

" Well, I dunno about you, but I figure 'four eyes' ain't expecting to see you 'round here either way. " He quipped, brow arched and tone light. " What brings you over across the Atlantic? I reckon it ain't business you've got in mind. "

Alistair had barely lit his cigarette when he felt a tap on his shoulder. The comments accompanying it brought a grin to his face and he turned to see the man behind him. "Well look who showed up! C'mere lad, it's been a dog's age since I had a chance to look at ya." He laughed a bit and patted the other man's shoulder in return, though with a bit more strength. "You really expect me to be here on business? Naw. Can't stand listening to that bawhead back home go on and on about the sky fallin' if he doesn't hold it up." He let out a heavy sigh at the memory, and took a nice long drag from his cigarette.

"In any case, I thought I might find ya here. What say we go out for a drink, aye? My treat." Already he had an arm around the blonde's shoulders, hoping to convince him. Who wouldn't take up the offer of a free drink these days? "You got any good place in mind? I haven't got a clue as to what's around here. Last time I came here, I was being dragged by the ear by that twat who still thinks himself my superior." Yet another reason he'd taken a vacation. Arthur could get bossy when he was stressed. Perhaps it came from being a perfectionist.

( because initiative is something i'm told i need to work on so here you go toma )

Ah, yet another meeting. It was a time of countries coming together to solve a common problem, or problems. Usually America or Germany headed it, but this time England had taken the stand. And subsequently Alistair was dragged along, forced to wear his uniform and "look presentable." He never did care for these meetings though. His sleeves were rolled up and his tie was loose, allowing for his shirt to remain open at the top. He'd taken up residence underneath the oak tree that stood beside the entrance to the building, and a lit cigarette hung from his mouth as he laid there in the shade. He wasn't about to be bothered to actually attend the meeting. He'd come along with Arthur because he was forced to, but participating hadn't been part of the deal. He cracked open an eye as he heard foot steps approach, stopping just shy of the door. "Something the matter with the door, lad?"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

annuit-coeptis In reply to Brave-Scotland [2016-11-19 16:18:06 +0000 UTC]

Well, the two of them in the same scene together certainly made quite a contrast.

While Alistair's definition of 'looking presentable' may have been on the looser end, it was evident Alfred had taken the phrase too closely to heart; with his hair neatly kept and his suit as pressed and presentable as it possibly could be, the younger male certainly bore the impression of professionalism, and just as he intended. Impressions were important to him, even if he couldn't help but question its relevance lately with the past week or so. Regardless, habits were habits, and America saw no reason to drop it anytime soon.

"Aside from it keeping me out?" he said jokingly, cracking a wry grin. "But maybe it's not the door that's the deal, here. I got to say, seeing you around here's quite the surprise."

He threw a look over at the other, blue eyes scanning up and down to affirm the reality present before him. It wasn't often that the personification of Scotland graced his presence during these meetings, after all; though, knowing his disheveled manner and the way England seemed rather annoyed moments earlier, he could only conclude it was not by Alistair's personal choice.

Absentmindedly, he wrinkled his nose for a moment. Though his nicotine addiction had certainly been at its worst in the past century, Alfred never really did like the smell of tobacco.

"Is it now? It's been a while since I came here, so England decided he was going to drag me by the ear. He didn't say anythin' about being in it, just that I had to go. So, here I am." He tapped the ashes from his cigarette onto the ground, before replacing it back in his mouth. Most countries had kicked the habit by now, with all the people shouting how bad it was. Alistair couldn't live without it though. Until the day tobacco was no longer produced, or until he died, he could be found happily puffing away at a cigarette.

"In any case, I see bushy brows got to you growing up. 'Look nice' 'comb your hair' 'wear a tie'. Aye, I heard all these things and more. Never took it to heart, but I guess you did." Well, he supposed someone had to inherit the man's habits. And if it wasn't him, then Alfred was the next best choice.
