The message thing that you're looking for is called a "note" which you send from the note center in the column to the left (if you're looking at this in your message center right now). Notes aren't used as often as comments so its a fine choice to have left a comment. I figured I'd leave this first before I forgot and now I'm off to look at your gallery.

so i went and found it FAQ #662: How do I create an Avatar, to display on my User Page and next to my Comments?
when ever i tried to make one i'd just open a new doc in ps that was 50x50
once upon a time i had an animated one i did but i dont remember how.
