I think it's very interesting the way you express yourself in your drawings and the way you perceive light/shadow is good too. By the way, what do you use for smudging the shading? A blending stump is very good for small areas, besides it comes in many sizes so you can use it for smaller areas too. You also can use tissue paper, with each media you use you'll get a different result. When I draw portraits for example I like using cotton, I don't know if there are other people that use it but I think it gives the drawing a nice tone closer to that of the human skin. A kneaded eraser is great for achieving particular tones too. Keep practsing and if possible find some books on anatomy and light/shade, I'm sure we'll see great improvement from you! Just wanted to give you some tips, hope I've helped with something

Oh my this did help a lot, thank you! Right now for the shading i normally just use my fingers...or i use a small paint brush to move around the graphite. Thanks for the tips, I'll try some different techniques

You're welcome, using your fingers might transfer some oil from your hands to the paper and sometimes you can actually leave some fingerprints that don't disappear when you try to erase them (even if you're hands are clean), so i use a smaller piece of paper to avoid contact with the drawing paper.
