Meh, my head canon is that they can feed off any emotion, but love is the "best" one in regards to quality/sustenance. Because honestly, how do you feed off love if you just razed Caterlot to the ground? I feel like they were feeding off fear then.

Well with a race out there that needs to feed off others in a parasitic relationship, it definitely opens up a lot of really interesting ideas. What the heck, I'm in for redeeming the swarm as well.

im an emotional bastard and seeing the changelings beaten up and losing broke my heart for a few days when i first saw that. seeing images of them being loved for what they are made me want them redeemed in show

Ok. *cracks neck* Let's get into this. Even though they seem to be a hive mind, a drone who's purpose would be to secure food for the hive would have to impersonate another pony. So a true hive mind would make that... difficult at best. They'd need to be able to think on their feet and adapt to the situation at hand, or risk being exposed. 

So, at least the way I see it, that would mean that Changelings are capable of free thought and could, if separated from the colony, function on their own. So lets say a few of the changelings weren't flung completely out of Equestria after the finale. Here you have a Changeling separated from the hive and fending for himself. Could he learn to gain love instead of taking it? Could he love in return? What happens to a changeling that no longer needs to siphon love out of victims? And a big thing that I've seen in fan work but is never mentioned in canon sources, can changelings "sense" the feelings of others? If you feed off love, it seems logical that you could sense it, and other emotions coming off ponies.

some said it could happen this way: an anonymous note goes to celestia and its apparently from chrysalis and when they find her, she is badly hurt and starving and that is how they are given love cause they now know why they needed it.

I'm ok with this actually. They aren't "evil", they're just surviving. It's just the way the went about doing it that's questionable, but that can be chalked up to never having a willing "food source".

I don't know about that. Killing would have been waaayyy out of character for the show, and there's no way it would have happened. But to say that the show's quality relied on changelings?

You said killing off the chagelings (or the equivalent of killing characters in MLP, since killing is a no-no) would make the show trash. While it would destroy some very good world building opportunities, the show had 53 episodes before a changeling showed up - I think the show's quality was already well established before changelings appeared. 

Even if they did kill the changelings, the writers have proven themselves time and time again that they are more than capable of making things work that normally would be fanbase shattering (EQG, alicorn twilight, princess cadance and shining out of nowhere, etc.). Pretty much, if MLP wanted to kill the changelings, the writers would have found a way to make it work.
