Remember; in photography, the best times to capture shots ranges from between 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. 12:00 p.m. would not be a good time choice; the harsh mid-afternoon sun creates sharp shadows and an over-abundance of contrast.
Also, using flash is a last resort in photography. Using the flash only washes out detail and over-exposes the image. Try setting up a lighting situation that fits the mood you want to portray, and work with a manual setting to avoid that automatic-flash device.
With drawing, remember to use those softer pencils to create eye-popping contrast!
