# About me
I recently joined deviantART. I'm not a great drawer, by any means, but I love to create pictures via dollmakers, especially pictures of characters I have invented.I'm working to become a published novelist, hence all of the characters. I like to give a little background on the characters in the descriptions, so you can tell where they fit in on things. I do not, however, have any plans to publish written works here.
Hope everyone enjoys what I upload! :D
Current Residence: Pittsburgh
Favourite genre of music: Rock and Roll

Hi! Just wanna ask something: do you think the god emperor of man from Warhammer 40k is more or less powerful than sailor moon ?

I have read the sporkings on Barbara Walker's book "Amazon" and I just want to say that I'm trying to create a matriarchal "closer-to-nature" fantasy species without making them sues.
They look like this: Fantasy species
The reason most of their cultures are stuck at stone-age level is that they are carnivores and have less reason to settle down and grow crops.

Umm... I left a comment on the sporking sign up thing. Did you get it? I’m sorry if I seem weird or anything. I’m just not sure if I’m doing it right.

What do you think would happen if Walker wrote a retelling of Hansel and Gretel in her Feminist fairy tales?

Am I the only one who thinks that it's backwards to call underage characters in works being sporked (I don't care how mary-sue they are) sluts when it's the presumably adult suethor sexualizing them? Examples are Ariana Black.

What do you think Gehayi would think about this fanart of avatar: Na'Vi Leaders
Also, what do you think about this fanfic: www.fanfiction.net/s/6375554/1…
It manages to deconstruct the movie without the "Hurr durr humanity nukes Pandora" crap.

I'm afraid I really don't have much by way of opinions on Avatar and its fanworks. I saw the movie only once, years ago, and I'm really more or less indifferent to it by this point.
I'm honestly not sure what Gehayi thinks of it either, so I can't say. My apologies.

Would the Flashman series:tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php…
be worthy of a sporking?
The point of the whole series is that the main character is a total bastard who is a sexist and racist but who still gets succesful in life.

I'm not familiar with the series, but it sounds like they would not. If a work is deliberately bad, there's not much point in sporking it. The only reason I could think to do so is if it fails at being satirical or a parody, but only someone who read the series could determine that.

There may be a few problematic aspects of flashman, the author sometimes preaches about the accomplishments of the british empire and is "anti-PC".
Flashman also thinks the native americans in "flashman and the redskins" are no better (or worse) than the europeans, but I'm not sure how much we are supposed to agree with him.

I know feminist fairy tales has a lot of problems, but I don't
think the mermaid in "the little mermaid" retelling is in any way comparable
to Gaston when she demands that he marries her.
The important thing to remember is the power imbalance, she's a disabled homeless
girl and he's a PRINCE.
There's no way she could viably threaten him, and if he actually lashed out it would be like if an adult hit an 8 year old child who threatened to kill them.

That's true, but the prince doesn't know that. He believes she's a fairy or some other magical being of power, so as far as he knows, refusing her will cause some terrible misfortune to befall him. And it's very likely the mermaid knows about this misunderstanding, because two guards discuss how she's probably a fairy while she's standing right in front of them. The prince also clearly believes she's a fairy, an angel, or a water sprite, and may or may not have said that to her (I'm afraid I had to return my copy of the book to the library, so I can't remember whether he thought this to himself or said it out loud).
Incidentally, that scene is far from the only one Walker wrote, both in Feminist Fairy Tales and otherwise, where she seems oblivious to the concept of Double Standard Rape: Female On Male. Perhaps that scene wouldn't have creeped myself and Gehayi out so much if that was not the case, but by that point we'd read enough of Walker's works to see that no, she really doesn't see that sort of thing as a problem.

I have read a few entries on das sporking, and I noticed that
most mary sues being sporked are designated heroes or get away with doing bad things,
but would a character who is ridiculously good at everything AND always heroic and nice to everyone be sporking material?

ZeldaQueen64 In reply to Chinesegal [2017-04-30 05:35:31 +0000 UTC]
Honestly, I think it would really depend on a lot of other factors. A ridiculously talented character isn't necessary a Sue or Stu or sporkable. If that character has flaws, if they aren't shoved front and center, or if people react realistically to that character, that goes towards them being more well-written characters.
A good example would be Tohru Honda, from Fruits Basket. She's great at housework, is an incredible cook, is friendly and welcoming to everyone she meets, always has helpful words of wisdom for people in need, is a supportive friend, etc. But the manga also gives her quite a few flaws, among which are a need to be selfless that is so strong that it's actually harmful. She's told at several points that it's okay to be a little selfish once in awhile, especially in ways like sharing emotional pain with others so she isn't overwhelmed. The anime doesn't give her those moments so I'd say she's a little closer to being a Sue there, but even then the other characters get their own feelings and motivations (not to the extent as in the manga, but still) so the entire show isn't nothing BUT how wonderful Tohru is.
Usually what makes a character sporkable are a number of issues together. Them being a jerk is a very easy one to recognize, as well as an easy one to point out (quite often it's a symptom of writers mishandling characters who are genuinely nice in canon, or who think that a character being nice means that they're being weak or a pushover). Since quite a few fics that give characters "backbones" are used to correct what the author thinks are problems, this often goes hand-in-hand with the character being made incredibly overpowered and bashing on other characters (for example, many Harry Potter writers feel that if Harry were more "assertive", he could have had access to so much more power and wouldn't have let characters like Ron/Dumbledore/the Dursleys/whoever upset or inconvenience him at all, so Harry becomes a jerk, gets lots of new powers, and yells at those characters).

Thanks!
Your explanation was really good, but I have noticed that whetever a character is a sue or likeable is relative.
For example, a character who is defined by how good and noble they are
never appealed to me. They exist in many older children's stories that are supposed to be morality lessons or black-and-white conflict fantasy stories.

ZeldaQueen64 In reply to Chinesegal [2017-05-07 22:26:16 +0000 UTC]
That is true, and that is why it can be difficult to determine whether or not a character can be called a Sue. Really, it might be more accurate to view Mary Sueism as a scale. There are characters by most definitions are, in fact, Sues (the earlier Disney Princesses, anime!Tohru Honda, etc) but they aren't so overblown or bad as, say, Bella Swan.
Also, whether or not a character is a Sue doesn't necessarily mean the work they're in is itself spork-worthy. Depending on how the rest of the work is handled, that particular character could be the only weak element there is (to use early Disney Princess movies as an example, the leads might not be particularly strong characters, but they have redeeming features such as good animation, beautiful artwork, catchy songs, and memorable secondary characters to carry the movie).

I read Das mervin's explanation for why she hates Avatar, and I just want to say that Tsaheylu isn't literally sex, the na'vi mate just like mammals according to the creator.
Also, it's canon that there are gay and lesbian na'vi who are accepted in their society, and na'vi who never mate for life, which is atleast better than Stephanie Meyer's world where everyone is straight and want to be in a heterosexual relationship.

Hi! Thanks for the explanation, though I'm afraid I've never actually read Mervin's explanation as to why she dislikes Avatar. I just know that she doesn't like it.

I felt I needed to clarify the tsaheylu isn't sex thing because I was tired of people
making jokes about how the na'vi bonding with the ikran is bestiality, and because I feel it's actually interesting as a concept.
I also can't really stand most avatar-haters, some critics are sane but most come across as armchair-warrior-edgelords who quote warHammer 40k and use racist rhetoric such as "teh na'vi R stoopid cuz tey be uh uhdvunced!!!" in their arguments.

I'm so glad! Walker really keeps topping herself with new levels of badness, and the essays and her Amazon novel only get worse. But it really makes Gehayi and I happy to know the sporkings are being enjoyed. Thank you!
Happy holidays!

Aw, thanks! I think that's my favorite right now. XD Scarlett makes for a good Jessica Rabbit, but I was surprised at how Iron Liz turned out. I'd picture her more with the fantasy genre, wielding a sword and shield.
