You're quite welcome! The safehold series is one of my favorites. I am actually in the middle of reading it for the 3rd or 4th time (I can't recall exactly which).

I appreciate that. It was a bit agonizing to complete. I must have gone through it, rereading, a dozen times or more in the time it took me to finish.

You think so? It feels incomplete to me. I'm probably just too close to it though...

well, it's probably not exhaustive, but it certainly gets the point across.

Welcome to #Ex-Christians , very glad to have you I'm just curious, when you say you recently deconverted, how recent is that? What was it, if anything in particular, which spurred that transition? I understand these things are deeply personal, so if you don't feel comfortable answering that's cool, I'm just interested in people's deconversion stories and your comment piqued my curiosity.

I can't pinpoint a time, It's been a long process, but sometime between November and January.
I was raised christian; my dad is fairly vocally religious; however, I've always been sorta humanist/trans-humanist in a lot of ways, and always aspired to a rational mindset. The latter led me to gradually downgrade from Gnostic Theist to Agnostic Deist over the course of several years. Then over the Christmas hols I got exposed to Christopher Hitchens, and I realized suddenly, while listening to him on YouTube (wouldn't venture to guess at a causal relationship there), that my morality and my rationality were totally incompatible with Christianity.
So, now i'd describe myself as an Apatheist Agnostic Antitheist, meaning that I don't know whether a god(s) exist, but don't care, because he's bound to be an asshole, one way or another.

haha, I love that description, I can definitely relate. I also know well how (unlike the too familiar "salvation prayer") these things aren't just suddenly decided or chosen, but usually a rather long process. At least going from deism to nontheism must have been not incredibly painful I hope? Still, a pretty recent thing for you, so welcome not only to the group but to freedom Hitchens has certainly had a similar impact on others, Seth Andrews of The Thinking Atheist [link] (whose recent book is also appropriately titled Deconverted) is someone I know often gives Hitchens a lot of credit for nudging him across that line. If you need more videos there's plenty listed in the group info (and more I need to add). And feel free to message me about anything

Thanks for the interest!
No, the final step was actually pretty painless, and kinda a big one, 'cos I've kinda jumped all the way to the opposite side of the god issue from my previous step.
As for links, I'm pretty good at finding media for myself, but I saw the list of links on the group info and was like "ooh! gotta visit 'em all!"
Oh, er, something I just thought of is that I still am living at home with my (fairly) religious family, who I have not told about my recent revelations. However, seeing as I'm closeted about my homosexuality at home already, one more thing to keep my mouth shut about oughtn't be too much trouble (I hope)...

Is it okay if I ask why you left? (I usually ask people who leave why, out of concern/curiosity/)

WalpurgisAk In reply to StrawberryR [2013-02-17 08:11:20 +0000 UTC]
Yeah. I left 'cause I no longer meet one of the requirements for being in the group. I essentially underwent a massive philosophical turnaround over the winter hols, and as a result, am no longer even the sort of vaguely deist christian I was.
