I've responded to your comments now, and understand this: I do not dislike you, I just removed the sugary coating from my words to make my message straightforward. I think you need to be told that you aren't perfect. These people in your comments are just....wow.

THANK YOU! I really appreciate it. There's only been one other person so far who has given me (For the most part) "sugarless" advice and criticism.

...What? I don't believe I've ever said anything more than "I'm not half bad at drawing". Where did you hear me bragging about being good at making art? (Art isn't a sport or activity, so saying something like "How good are you at art?" is improper grammar and makes no sense.)

IN3RNOXD In reply to Long-Shanks [2013-09-19 03:06:59 +0000 UTC]
h, pardon me but I do believe the phrase 'compliment diarrhea' in particular is going a little too far. While it is true, a good portion of most works that receive excessive praise are, as you said, mediocre at best, it doesn't hurt to remind someone what they're doing right occasionally. This helps retain the motivation and inducement required for people to continue to strive to do their best as an artist, and prevent them from ending up quitting drawing entirely as a result of feeling ignored or underappreciated. As a critic myself, I can more than agree with you in regards to criticism being direly stipulated in order for someone to succeed, but here's a wild idea, how about you give a little something called CONSTRUCTIVE criticism instead of blatantly degrading someone's work because it's receiving praise? Believe it or not, ANYONE can say something's generic and uninspired, or there's a problem with a person's style. But it takes a great deal of exerted wisdom and effort to be able to come prepared with a solution, and I would highly recommend you at least attempt to do so in the future. Especially when you yourself acknowledge you look like an 'ass' upon neglecting to do so, instead, resorting to...this.
Completely contrary to your comment, everyone is not too nice on Deviantart, they're just on the same level, and as a result, make an appoint to commend others who are growing at exponential rates alongside them. I apologize for being unable to boast that I'm an elite art supremacist with the derived authority required to use such sophisticated and eloquent terms as 'dog shit' and 'uninspired', but seriously? I'm sorry but this is not supportive or potentially helpful in the slightest. You complain about extremists that barrage others with empty praise, yet yourself resort to barraging with hateful and counterproductive comments of an unencouraging façade, yet justify this with the guise of 'criticism vital to growth as an artist'. Yeah, because Van Gogh really looked back on all the times his work was described as outlandish, surreal, and wouldn't you know, 'uninspired', he really credited that to his divine inspirational genius, and vital growth as an artist.
What I'm saying is, if you really want to be the one to shame others for providing encouragement, which may I remind you, encouragement just as vital, if not more, to growth as an artist, as critiques are, at least try to be professional about it. There needs to be a balance. You can't have too much praise, or too much degrading otherwise you just get an unbalanced artist with unbalanced work which ends up just overall awful as an end result. And I love how you claim there's not a single shred of criticism anywhere, yet you obviously just completely ignored the second section of my critique of his work where I specifically mentioned his flaws. Albeit in humorous and self deprecating way, I still talked about it. You see, I make an appoint to use this concept of a balance so I don't come off as an ass or a person with compliment diarrhea to people who bother to read as opposed to blindly harboring a grudge about a statement in High school about a comic you made.
"Don't mistake this for hate" but, you're a hypocrite, plain and simple. Your alleged 'encouragement' is extremely judgmental, your just profanity is uncalled for, and the fact that you submit this under the guise of helping the development of artists makes me sick. If I do people a disservice by providing them words of discouragement in my critiques, so be it. I'll even make an appoint to cap on more 'flaws' vividly descripted, in the future, like I'm doing with you. But your ignorant, biased, and irate passive aggressive intolerance for people that appreciate art you deem 'uninspired' is just unnecessary and condescendingly sad. It's people like you that make 'this is why we can't have nice things' jokes so relatable.
So what if a legion of artists sing his praises in a harmonious chorus throughout the comment section for perpetuity, good on him for having produced something people like. Why should you care, unless you're unsatisfied with the lack of critiques in your mailbox, in which case I can have an oral disquisition on every aspect of your art typed up in about half an hour, not counting the time taken to observe. But that's right, apparently my ability to point out flaws, or lack thereof, is slandered because I decided to praise someone viewed as an artist not as skilled as you. If you took into consideration that maybe people just...oh I don't know...have a different taste in art than you and find the 'flat and lifeless' figures to be unoriginal and stylized in a manner most appealing, you wouldn't even have to worry about people considering you an ass.
Β
I don't hate you, or even remotely dislike you, but what I dislike is your lack of hesitance to assume that a large wall of text and a few warm encouraging smiley faces constitutes empty praise without a shred of insightful criticism. I freely admit I tried being benevolent here and, resulted in being overly kind because when I came across this page, Ayr had not received comments in months. And considering I'm the only one who commented before your pseudo-intellectual inquiry about his art with encouraging words, one would be lead to believe your comments where at least inspired by my 'empty praise without a shred of criticism'. So forgive me for having an opinion and a taste in art that contradicts your perfect definition accepted by virtually everyone, and please overlook my lack of a pedestal when typing this vindication, because my art isn't that great, but I accept that. Some people know they're not Van Gogh, and they live with it, determined to do better. I'm disappointed that you would sink to the level of shaming people who support others just because they aren't bashing art for it's perceived flaws and imperfections. Overall, your botched attempt to 'help someone's growth' was nothing more than a botched attempt to one up a fellow artist over a petty grudge. And on that note, I really hope you take this into consideration and start thinking of new things in order to better yourself.

And I've taken these things you've said into consideration, and I've decided that you are a windy douche-bag. Pseudo intellectual? Says the man who stuffs as many big words as he can into one comment just to tell me that I'm an asshole. I don't need you to tell me that what I did was wrong. So get back up on your high-horse and ride your over-inflated ass outta here.

I sat next to Ayr at lunch, to show my friend the progress I had made, and Ayr included himself in our conversation,he picked my art apart. I came here to hurt his feelings. I didn't want it to be so obvious though so I dressed it up as hard criticism. Yes, I'm ashamed of my actions. And you've punished me with this novel about how bad a person I am.
