I would suggest that it's because
1. People of sad/depressed/gloomy/dark personality tend to associate with others of sad/depressed/gloomy/dark personality.
2. Such people tend to be less sociable, so they know less people, and the likelihood of a small sample of people all going through hard times is high (the smaller the sample size, the higher the statistical variance).

I know it's true for me. My friends are pretty troubled as me, and those artists that I think about tend to have sad/depressed/gloomy art styles.
I think I have counted at least three suicidal attempts among the artists I watch on dA (at least according to their journal pages).

Doesn't quite account for the numbers. It's not like everyone I know is a student.

I should, I know. But I've kind of stopped for a long while and now I keep making excuses (like studies, projects, sitting on my ass doing absolutely nothing for no reason).
"Disquiet dream" is a good way to describe the style I've recently decided I want to go after. At least after I get some skill. There's actually a cyberpunk-ish thing being scribbled in my sketchpad lately. Not sure if I can make it work though.

What I mean is that there's already a lot of MLP groups and without a specific goal it's of limited use. The fact that the original founder left so early also makes me question it's hopes of success.
And please pardon my overly literalistic way of speech, I simply feel like typing in this manner today.
