oh, well
Hard to describe. Basically, the country consists of a really long north-south coastline, and a bunch of mountain areas. There is a lot of forest, and only 2% arable land. The coastline is a bit like in Maine, or the Pacific Northwest, but Norway also has long fiords. Living costs are high, basically for political reasons (the parts of the economy that are not exposed to international competition are kept quite inefficient, to preserve the privileges of influential groups). Intellectual life in Norway is ingrown - lots of Norwegians take it for granted that Norwegian viewpoints are the only sound ones. There is an extensive welfare state, which is both good and bad. Education is free, and the living costs of college students are paid partially by grants and partially by loans, but most college students have some small job in addition, otherwise many of them would come up short. Health care is mostly free. As an example, I had a heart bypass operation (it was a quadruple bypass operation) three years ago. It cost me zero. In the USA, the average cost of a heart bypass operation (average of all such procedures, simple as well as complicated) is USD 117000 for someone without any health insurance. As you might expect, the health care system is very expensive, so people have to wait in line for various procedures. And the government is reluctant to pay for really expensive medicines. Everyone is recorded as a patient with some particular general practitioner MD (these usually have some 1000-1500 names on their list). When we are sick, we go to our GP MD (or to an emergency room, if it is an emergency). The GP MD acts as a gatekeeper, sending us to hospital or to a specialist MD as needed. A visit to the GP MD usually costs around USD 20-50. We are responsible for nearly all our dental expenses; I had a bit less than USD 4000 dental expenses in Fall 2018. About USD 2000 of that was for work to redo dental work done in Paris, that was not good enough. Like in the USA, there is a kind of Social Security system. There is also a disability pension scheme, which has run off the rails. The proportion of the population age 18-65 on disability in Norway is nearly twice as large as in the USA. The politicians have over many years used disability to hide unemployment. In Norway we get 100% of our salary replaced when we are away from work sick. The criteria for sickness pay are quite loose, so we have nearly twice the proportion of all employees away from work "sick" as in Sweden. All this can go on until the income from oil goes into its final decline. Taxes are extremely high already (we have 25% sales tax, actually VAT, and high income taxes), so increased taxes won't save the welfare state when oil income fails.
I have been to nearly all of Western Europe, the USA, India and Hong Kong.
