I'm doing pretty well. Ankle deep in house-moving. Need to get around to setting up my art station again. I miss having a monitor over 13 inches across. XD

Good luck with the move! Yes, 13" monitors are so small. I use a 16" monitor myself. What's your usual?

Thanks! And I run my laptop in parallel with a 23" monitor. I'm one of those people who tries to get as close as I can to the pixels. XD
I need to get PaintToolSAI. PhotoShop isn't cutting it for me anymore.

SAI is definitely superior as far as blending/lineart is concerned imo. Have you heard of Lazy Nezumi? [link] It's supposedly helpful for drawing smoother lines and it had a lot of compatibility with different art programs. I tried it and I'm not sure if I'm using it right xD;;; but I'm sure others have used it successfully!

CosmicWaltz In reply to ULTRArei [2013-04-04 09:54:25 +0000 UTC]
I had not heard of that, actually. It looks pretty neat (though, judging by what you've said, when it's working), but my use of a MacBook puts me out for that program. XP
I have Adobe Suites CS4, which I've gotten somewhat accustomed too. The thing that gets me though is how each program has pieces of what I'd like to see in one art tool. PS's paintbrush has pressure variance, but it's a bit too sensitive, so everything comes out shaky by hand. >.> AI maps my jitteriness to a vector so I can see how badly I draw, but has simplification features to smooth it out! However, it lacks pressure use. ._. Then FL has the best brush I've seen for direction, pressure, and smoothness! ... but only for FLV files. T^T I hear SAI is the best of all those features. And although it doesn't have the full scope of utility that any of the Adobe programs have, I can't say I ever use those higher features anyway.
Now I just have to get off my lazy bum and track it down. XD

Ahh, too bad about the lack of iMac compatibility :V
If you're using a Wacom, couldn't you adjust the exact sensitivity of your pen? I'm not sure how it works since I don't have one though xD But I've used different versions of Photoshop in the past and I understand what you mean with the shaky lines! It blows my mind that people can use PS for lineart O__O Paint Tool SAI is pretty much only a drawing/painting program since it lacks the filters/advanced color adjustment stuff that PS and other similar programs have. A lot of people use it just for lines and then color in PS

CosmicWaltz In reply to ULTRArei [2013-04-08 13:16:42 +0000 UTC]
Setting adjustment is useful, but the very nature of the Photoshop brush tool puts it in poor use for me. It doesn't carry a solid line as much as it "dots" the path. However closely the dots apply and the total file resolution decides the flow, so it's either work in a much larger file, or use the precision of the pen tool and paths. And if I'm already using the pen tool, why not just use AI in the first place? XD
Lately I've used AI for all of my line art, then place it in a top layer with alpha channel in PS for coloring. Takes a lot longer than I'd like though. Will greatly consider SAI. I think it's freeware, isn't it?

I need to get cracking on learning/practicing AI >__< I've rarely done vector stuff but I should just suck it up and do it.
How big do you usually work? I work at 300dpi in PS and I've recently been able to make smoother lines after adjusting the pressure settings on my pen and making slightly faster strokes.
SAI is actually not freeware, but it's commonly pirated I suppose. It's much more affordable than PS though (I think it was around $50-53 the last time I checked?)

CosmicWaltz In reply to ULTRArei [2013-04-08 21:13:24 +0000 UTC]
I'd be a pirate in the days ol' of seafaring. And yet, I have accidentally downloaded something that I later found out was pay-to-download, so I tracked down the creator and paid them via paypal. XD It's not that I'm against piracy, more I'm for supporting things I like. I'll track it down and see.
AI is pretty easy after you learn the inherent differences. What I like is the ability to make a stroke path, outline it into an object, then edit it with points to taper how you need. Super precise line art, infinitely scalable, if a bit more time consuming to make. Also, even though I know nothing of animation yet, the vectors are easily transferable thereafter to its sister program Flash.
I use 300 dpi, but usually work with images in excess of 5000x3000 px. This makes my processor crash like an after-party DJ. >.>

Ahh!!! Wow, you work HUGE! I guess you print stuff out normally?? The biggest I've been working lately is A4 size at 300dpi (not sure about the pixel dimensions). I think I'll be giving AI a whirl as soon as my classes are over with @___@

CosmicWaltz In reply to ULTRArei [2013-04-17 13:05:09 +0000 UTC]
It's a cross between working with the future potential to print if I ever so desire, and me just being headstrong in forethought most of the time. XD
Verbi gratia:
[link] A vector made with masks in Photoshop at a huge dpi, because for some reason I didn't think to use AI. -_-
[link] Okay, this one at least was better off being made in PS, but it's still a friggin' 20"x28" poster. XD
[link] And this was just me getting carried away with a simple idea. Original file is something like 6000x6000 px. >.>
I'm not a small-file worker. XD
