Hey! What's up? Are you well? I log in from time to time to check up on things. Haven't stopped writing, just stopped uploading.

you didn't upload your work to anywhere at all in the internet or just dA?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TimeFlies In reply to moyanII [2010-08-10 14:41:37 +0000 UTC]

I haven't uploaded anywhere at all. Except, if it counts, where my work has appeared in online journals (recently only Haiku News run by Dick and Laurence - Laurence55 and Solarts - though I'm waiting on a Heron's Nest submission). I've continued to send work to print journals too (Frogpond, Blithe Spirit).

There are a few reasons for this, but partly because I started doing a part-time masters course in English literature last September, with the hope of expanding my knowledge and understanding of poetry in general, and correspondingly to further my understanding of English-language haiku (what it is, what it can be). This has taken up a lot of the time I used to spend on DA etc!

How is the world of haiku for you? What else is new?

i met a bottleneck in haiku making due to the official death of my electronic japanese-english dictionary...
i got so used to that gadget to get the right word.
recently i bought another second hand one. i am working on a new set, and i hope it will be substantial enough to be posted soon.

"She stood there, half way between the orient and here. Bitter white clouds lingered and then went, capturing the splash of yellow that the sun bathed our faces in."
This is so beautiful! Where does it come from, who wrote it?

Hi there Mahi, no problem Didn't have time to comment after reading earlier.

There are many powerful lines and turns of phrase in there, it was a pleasure to read. And I like works with an anti-war message. Am I right in thinking you were in the military at one point?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mahi-Fish In reply to TimeFlies [2009-06-30 20:31:37 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Chris! I wasn't bothered by it at all.

You are correct. I was indeed a soldier at one point, though everything in here is drawn from my best friend's life. My story is explored more in 'Forgotten Soldier' which I wrote shortly after learning that a friend of mine was deployed.

Hey dude - thought I'd let you know I got two poems accepted for the next issue of Simply Haiku so the three of us will be in it together. YAY!!!! How exciting - the new blood of modern haiku and senryu.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TimeFlies In reply to SOLARTS [2009-06-17 20:17:31 +0000 UTC]

Wow, that is so cool!!!

It's really exciting that we'll all be in there - kind of crazy actually!

the new blood indeed

Which ones did they take?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SOLARTS In reply to TimeFlies [2009-06-17 23:25:17 +0000 UTC]

They took:

half moon
a white face stands out
in Harlem

(which is interesting because that is definitely part senryu to me - I wrote it to have both a haiku and senryu reading). And they also took:

night fog
sinking into the bayou
cricket's song

Which is a re-interpretation of the famous Basho poem I wrote while in Mobile, Alabama at Christmas.

I think we three will go somewhere my friend! We are definitely the 'new blood'. The brat pack of haiku? The Holy Trinity - hahahahahaha! I am just kidding. Even I don't have an ego that big!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TimeFlies In reply to SOLARTS [2009-06-18 15:39:48 +0000 UTC]

A great pair they chose, particularly that secong one - its so tangible!

I'm not sure if I know which Basho poem it references though.

Hahaha, the holy trinity! I don't think we'd get so far if we took that as our tagline!

Your ego may not be that big, but if you factor in your id and your superego... haha just joking!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SOLARTS In reply to TimeFlies [2009-06-18 22:18:09 +0000 UTC]

It references the Basho one-

stillness
sinking into rocks
cicada's song

Hahahahahaha - true, that superego always gets in the way...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TimeFlies In reply to SOLARTS [2009-06-21 17:34:48 +0000 UTC]

Ah yeah I did know that one by Basho actually. Very nice reference
