Hey Tim, just wanted to say I've spent all morning gaping at your photographs of Japan. They're amazing and I just had to sub!
I was wondering if you could give me little advice actually. I've just got back from my year abroad in Kobe ad I've got some 30 odd photographs that I want to upload, but I don't really know much about the process of making them look so amazing. Of course I appreciate that a large part of it is down to the original photo, and one's own artistic sense, but I was wondering if you could share any tips regarding the enhancing process, for example if you use photoshop what kind of tools you use, etc.
Thanks so much for your time, I love your work.

Hi! Sorry it took a while to reply.
I used to live in Kobe as it happens. Where did you stay?
You are right that most of the work comes when taking the photo, not just compositionally, but also quality of light (time of day + weather) and technical things like focus and exposure. If any of those are off, it's harder to improve in post.
Although I've dabbled in HDR, I generally try to go easy with photoshop. I shoot RAW (.DNG), which gives me some leeway to improve / fix exposure later.
Generally my workflow is:
1. Open the RAW file in Adobe Camera Raw.
2. Fix whitebalance - eye-dropper + fine adjustments with the sliders.
3. Increase contrast if the image is too flat - s-curve.
4. Increase the exposure while holding the alt key to protect highlights - I usually underexpose when I take the photo to make sure I don't blow out highlights.
5. Increase fill-light if necessary.
6. Run automatic lens corrections (removing distortion and purple fringing).
Once the file is in photoshop I don't usually do anything except noise reduction when necessary and resizing the image for web. Alex Nail has a really good plugin for that: [link]
That sounds like a lot of work when I read it back, but it's really not.
If you aren't shooting RAW, then learn how to use the curves and levels tools. They are the basic tools for correcting white-balance, exposure and contrast.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask!

Your photos of Japan are absolutely beautiful, thanks for sharing them with those of us who can't travel there. Some of them remind me a little of the calendars that Sanyo use to hand to my Dad & each of their employees in Argentina, they displayed a variety of Japanese scenaries: tea houses, rivers, temples, castles, cherry blossoms... all in different seasons of the year. Unfortunately we don't get the calendars anymore but your photographs allowed me to enjoy Japanese landscapes once again. So thank you!!!

on Fall in New England. This is one of my own favorites in my own gallery. It was October. It was raining and drizzling. The leaves were turning into vivid browns, reds, and orange colors. Nature was getting ready to rest. I'm very pleased you like it. [link]
on City of Gold. This is the golden city on a clear windy night when the smog has been blown away. [link]
