"The female version of South Italy, or Italy Romana, is drawn with dark, shoulder-length hair held back by a pink headband. She wears what appears to be either a ruffly pink top or dress. The fanon name given to her by Japanese fans is Katarina Vargas (which could also be rendered Caterina, a name widely used in southern Italy). In a blog update, Himaruya had mentioned that he was sent a list of names for some of the Nyotalia characters, and that he liked the name listed for South Italy, Chiara, commonly pronounced as "Key-ARE-ah" in Italy. Though, Himaruya had also stated in another blog update that her name was not official. Another commonly used fanon name is Lovina Vargas, which orginated from her male counterpart's official human name, Lovino Vargas. In a note about the character, Himaruya said that she is better at fighting than her male counterpart. In the most recent chibi sketch of her she has regained the trademark haircurl and is seen to be wearing what appears to be a military uniform with a headband. She is also referred to as "Romana-san:, showing that she might be the type to be respected."
Relationships:
Italy:
The two sisters grew up knowing of each other, but they never actually met face to face. Italy (Feliciana) eventually went off to live with their grandmather for some time, while South Italy stayed behind. After Grandma Rome had died and Italy came back, South Italy and the others became bullies to Feliciana. The two were separated again at the end of the Italian War, when Italy was claimed by the Holy Roman Empire and Austria, while South Italy was sent to live with Spain because she was too difficult to deal with.
In the present day, the two sisters do not get along very well; South Italy occasionally refuses to acknowledge her sister's existence, though Italy is more than eager to be around her older sibling. As a child, South Italy often felt jealous and inferior to Italy, due to the younger sister inheriting their grandmother's talent for art, while she could barely draw. She also felt that her sister took after their grandmother in appearance more. Despite this though, she is shown to have at least a subconscious care for her, becoming upset when her sister implies she does not admire her, and sharing a bed with her. Usually when it is hinted that she cares about Italy though, something happens that angers her and she instantly reverts back.
Germany:
Unlike her sister, South Italy hates Germany and cannot stand to see her and Italy together. She refers to Germany as a "potato bastard" and "bitchy potato".
South Italy had attempted to get revenge on a few occasions, but failed each time:
Tried to charge at Germany, but slipped on a banana peel and skinned her arm.
Pulled the pin off a "Red Devil" grenade, but threw the pin instead of the actual grenade, which she held in her mouth.
Threatened to throw tomatoes at Germany and "rip every muscle" off of her body, but wound up frightened by France.
Attempted to embarrass Germany by holding up a fake mustache (to make her look like she was sporting one), but wound up making herself look like she wore the mustache instead.
It is suggested that she might hate Germans in general, seeing that she thought one as a danger when she was a kid and got scolded by Spain because she believed the German would attack Spain. Chiara revealed that her stereotype of Germans is that they are all "uncivilized country bumpkins with bad physiology". When Germany noted that Italy happened to have Germanic blood as well, it caused South Italy to go into a rage and attempt to charge at her (only for the above banana incident to occur).
Spain:
Because Spain raised her, South Italy has assimilated her culture, customs, religion, and her love for tomatoes. While Spain often acts affectionately towards her, South Italy tends to treat her rather coldly because she believes that Spain just wants her grandmother's inheritance. Deep down, she does care about Spain, though she rarely shows it openly; she seems to become extremely jealous when Spain is with someone else. When Spain caught a cold, South Italy increases imports from Spain (despite having a cold himself) and overcomes her weakness to the mafia (even though he usually bends to their will).
In her youth, South Italy would often jump on Spain or headbutt her in the stomach to wake her up. This caused Spain to have a nightmare where an adult South Italy jumped on her and "crushed her vital regions".
