I really do hate valentines day as well. Not only due to the whole 'Ive got a relationship and you don't' essence of it, but a good friend passed away three years ago on valentines day.

...Wow. I should really take your signature to heart.
But... Unfortunately, all the people I know who draw and that I have respect for are much better at it than I am. And the others I have no respect for as people, so they don't count

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Teh-Kraken In reply to FelixKilldeer [2008-05-25 03:36:14 +0000 UTC]

Lol I suppose thats right about the people you have no respect for but yeah. Same here. People I respect are so awesome at drawing, and I can't even be committed enough to draw a little every day. Any ways to motivate me? Perseverance is the key, I just can't be fucked.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FelixKilldeer In reply to Teh-Kraken [2008-05-25 04:53:16 +0000 UTC]

Well... I get motivation from anime (I marathon watch it, and then draw fanart for as long as I feel inspired--Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni has granted me more than a month of inspiration so far, and I expect more when I see the live-action movie that just came out... if I can get my hands on a copy), manga, and video games. The other trick is to draw something every day--Even if it's just a couple of sketches on a piece of paper, the longer you do it for, the easier it will become to think up compositions, and the better you'll get just from the practice. Though, really, the best and quickest way to improve is to draw from life. If it's trees, buildings, or that kind of thing you need to improve on, you're in luck, because you can just walk around with a sketchbook and draw them, but if it's figure art you need to improve on (Like myself DX), then you have no such luck--Really, you have to take a live-modeling class. Since I switched from taking that to taking the comic book arts class, my figure drawing has gotten worse, although my overall skill has gotten better, and my technique as improved a lot
So... Yeah. I guess that was a really windy way of saying, "draw, and you'll get better at it, eventually"
As for inspiration... Different things inspire different people. I know some people who can get inspired by browsing around on dA, but personally, if I see someone whose art isn't as good as mine, I drop by and give them advice, which good in its own way, but doesn't help me at all, and if I see someone whose art is better than mine... I get depressed because I remember just how much time I've wasted instead of spending it drawing. Like, for instance, almost all the time I've spent here on dA and other places on the interne--Oh crap

Teh-Kraken In reply to FelixKilldeer [2008-05-25 05:56:11 +0000 UTC]

Yeah thats the same with me a bit like I spend so much time on the PC i dont draw. I just dont feel motivated to make time for it, then go get on the PC and play games

Man im lazy. Thanks for your advice though! It really helps

FelixKilldeer In reply to Teh-Kraken [2008-05-25 14:55:02 +0000 UTC]

Haha, drawing on the computer takes more patience than I have. It takes... So darn long DX

Also, thanks for the watch! ^^

Teh-Kraken In reply to FelixKilldeer [2008-05-26 07:59:45 +0000 UTC]

Lol thats K yeah drawing on PC takes forever

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FelixKilldeer In reply to Teh-Kraken [2008-05-26 15:39:48 +0000 UTC]

It takes forever, and when I'm doing it I think, "why the heck don't I just use my pens for this?"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Teh-Kraken In reply to FelixKilldeer [2008-05-27 06:44:18 +0000 UTC]

Yeah and i find it a fair bit harder too its pretty monotonous

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FelixKilldeer In reply to Teh-Kraken [2008-05-27 16:24:48 +0000 UTC]

It's harder and takes longer, but you can do more stuff with it, so I guess it kinda balances out.

Teh-Kraken In reply to FelixKilldeer [2008-05-28 07:01:34 +0000 UTC]

Mmmh i suppose but that doesnt make it any less tedious.

FelixKilldeer In reply to Teh-Kraken [2008-05-28 15:39:18 +0000 UTC]

Well... I guess people mean it when they say, "patience is a virtue" XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Teh-Kraken In reply to FelixKilldeer [2008-05-29 06:34:30 +0000 UTC]

Lol totally I just can't seem to be patient when doing it I get bored quite easily

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FelixKilldeer In reply to Teh-Kraken [2008-05-29 06:54:56 +0000 UTC]

Haha, me too. You should try traditional media--It's a lot more engaging
I find that if I do a pencil sketch, then ink it, and then color it or inkwash it, I don't get bored at all throughout the entire one-two hour process. If I decide to shade it in charcoal, it can be a little more boring, and then graphite is even more boring than that, but really, I've started to find that when I'm drawing, the picture decides for me how I'll finish it

Teh-Kraken In reply to FelixKilldeer [2008-05-29 09:03:14 +0000 UTC]

Mmm. I can never get good ideas for poses

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FelixKilldeer In reply to Teh-Kraken [2008-05-29 14:16:10 +0000 UTC]

Hm.... Now that I think about it, I used to have a lot of trouble, too... At some point, it got a lot easier... Though, now, when I'm sitting at my sketchbook, I'll come up with a pose, and think "Wait, I already did this one! I can't do it again!"... The result being that by now I've started to run out of poses, especially with my limited understanding of perspective

I guess, draw more, and that part should become easier, too... Even if all you're doing is little thumbnail sketches with no interesting angle, as you sketch better ideas will come to you. Also, thumbnail sketches are a nice way to try out complicated poses and angles, so that you can work out most of the mistakes before doing a full-blown colored piece, and then looking at it and thinking "Shoot! I never noticed that his leg is bent backwards!" (Well... That would be a pretty complicated pose )

Teh-Kraken In reply to FelixKilldeer [2008-05-30 07:11:11 +0000 UTC]

Lol I usually stuff up full blown photos so that would help, I've just got no ideas on poses

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FelixKilldeer In reply to Teh-Kraken [2008-05-30 18:43:29 +0000 UTC]

The more you come up with them, the easier it will be to come up with more XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FelixKilldeer In reply to Teh-Kraken [2008-05-31 13:10:27 +0000 UTC]

I am now XD
I netflix'd the first disc and watched it Thursday night. (Well... Okay, Friday morning)

Yeah, it's a amazing how funny that show manages to be--It's one of those things that's obviously aimed at 10-12 year olds, but stands up to a few more years of cynicism

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Teh-Kraken In reply to FelixKilldeer [2008-06-01 08:25:59 +0000 UTC]

mmmh. It was aimed at such a young group but lots of older people enjoy it too

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FelixKilldeer In reply to Teh-Kraken [2008-06-02 01:17:30 +0000 UTC]

Yup. I think it's because it was aimed at younger kids, but it was well done--That is, younger kids are finding it funny because they get most of the jokes and oh hey that rock Sokka just kicked bounced off an inn sign and hit him in the head ha ha ha, while older people find it funny because they get all the jokes... And the ones that are aimed at the younger audience stand up well. Good stuff
