# About me
If you can't tell, already, I'm enamored of geodesic constructs. It is my hope that these deviations will inspire others.

dear TG, u kindly rendered a hexagon planet for me on geodesic help group for me recently, please would you like to help with our album artwork by supplying hi res images/variations, as outlined in my post. happy to credit you and donate modestly, it's just a small release. but your findings would make it huge. respect is due and thanks, best wishes, colundi everyOne

Say, by any chance did you notice this study I did on SU and the results of saving in different styles, or is this common knowledge?

Don,
I had not seen your study, but I do, personally, take full advantage of components (as opposed to groups,) because of the file-size savings.
It should be common knowledge, since it's in the "SketchUp Users Guide,"Β but many don't read it (or, even, know about it.)

Well the point was about components but also what view style you save your work in.
Yup, I didn't know about it. Thanks

Say, do you use this www.instructables.com/id/Const⦠geodesic sphere for your spheres? It gripes me out that it isn't made of regular shapes.

While I do use SketchUp, that tutorial subdivision "method" is only one of many. (If I recall correctly, >9 methods have been documented.)
The only convex polyhedra that can be constructed of equilateral triangles are the tetrahedron, octahedron and icosahedron. To produce greater complexity (and more-closely approximate a sphere,) irregular triangles must be introduced. If the solid surface is allowed both, concave and convex regions, then Lobel frames, employing equilateral triangles, can be a (rather odd) solution:

Thanks.
I wasn't necessarily thinking of equilaterals and should have said fewer regular shapes. I think in years past I had found those tetra's, octa's and iso's but due to senility or an early case of alzheimer's I couldn't find any tutorials for the past couple of weeks, except that link I mentioned. More exactly, I was thinking of Epcot's Space Ship Earth which, in my mind's eye, I thought was made from two or three regular triangles reiterated to make a sphere. Imagine my embarrassment when I just looked it up (having only now remembered it's name) and found it actually has a lot of "fudging."
As a matter of fact, I think I just remembered a previous search for geodesic tutorials that I found by looking up "soccer ball" so I'll try that now...
My apologies if I was a bother and my thanks for your help.

Spaceship Earth (Epcot) is, indeed, visually deceiving. If recollection serves, there are about 40 different triangle definitions:

Is there any sphere you HAVEN'T done??
That is an awesome bit of modeling. 40 different instances of triangles, eh? Yikes!

Found Domerama online. Blew me away! Never thought such a comprehensive resource existed. Makes me wonder why I'd never seen it before.. hum. I'll be checking in from time to time, you got some great work up here. Cheers!

Dan,
Funny thing: Most of my work doesn't show up in Google searches. (I have no idea why.) Generally, people find me & my geodesic constructs through links at other websites (like Domerama.)
I hope you find things, not only visually appealing, but technically helpful, as well.

Feel free to ask. I don't know that I can help much with calculations. Except for the phyllotaxis deviations, I didn't use calculations -- I employ geometric construction methods.
Hopefully, however, I should be able to point you in the right direction.

Hi Taff Goch! Β Β
Your 92 gears are blowing my mind.
I found it searching for ideas for a graphic to represent our event management application - showing that it is one integrated system with components engineered to work together.
1. Β Could we use this as-is on our website? Β We can add attribution as you require.
2. Β Even more amazing would be if we could label each large gear with the name of one of our subsystems. Β is it possible to make such a variant of the animation?
Thanks!

Hello! Your stuff is amazing! I am a computer art teacher and would love to have my students work towards something like this. I am also interested in using your gear sphere (the one in primary colors) on a website. Would that be something you are open to? Of course your work would be cited with proper links. Thanks so much!
Erin

Erin,
Teach away, with whatever I've posted.
I only wish that the primary polyhedra had been addressed in more detail, when I was in school. I self-taught myself geodesic math (spherical trig,) after college, over 35 years ago. I hope that something in my "art" collection will inspire some degree of interest in at least a few of your students.
Attribution of any use on your website is appreciated.

Thanks,
I looked at the challenge, and produced the following: Polyhedron: 16-Sided
Only problem is that it can't serve as "dice," since there are no parallel faces, so a number can't display on a (non-existent) top face.
Interesting exercise, nevertheless....

as cool as your gallery is, I can't help but feel it's a bit too monotone...
every single entry seems to be a slightly different polyhedron, chain-ball or geodesic sphere...
all I ask for is a bit of variety, something that will show the full potential of the 3d artist in you...
