Age: 403 (Subtracted 2011 - 1609 (the year Henry Hudson explored the East Coast))

Alex is a very energetic person. When insulted (usually stereotypes), she says, "If you really think that, Come see for Yourself." (Come see for Yourself is the state's tourism slogan). She's honest and will usually speak her mind. Alex enjoys hanging out with people, socializing, learning and exploring. She has a bit of an attitude problem. People think she's a snobby brat because she was once England's Royal/Crown Colony. She's a total tomboy. Takes pride in being one of America's historical and diverse states. She has a strong sense of equality (being one of the more liberal states). She's also protective of some things/people.

History (Pre-Colonial):

~Many Native American Tribes occupied NJ before the Netherlands came. The majority group were the Lenni-Lenape Indians, who she resided with before the colonial history.

New Netherlands/New Sweden

~After Sir Henry Hudson's exploration to the NJ area in 1609, the Netherlands took control of the area 5 years later (1614) along with part of New York, Delaware, and Connecticut. They also had small outpost in Rhode Island and Pennsylvania.
~1638: After given permission by the Queen of Sweden, former Director of the West India Trade Company, Peter Minuit, was able to start the colony of New Sweden in the southern part of NJ. Netherlands or the English could not claim the land because they could not come to terms with the dominant power in that area, the Susquehannock Indians.
~1655: Soon after Sweden opened the Second Northern War in the Baltic, Netherlands moved and seized Fort Christina and Fort Trinity easily.
Peach Tree War- A large scale attack from the Susquehannock Nation and allied Native Americans on several New Netherland settlements along the North River. This was motivated by the Dutch claiming New Sweden.
~1658: Peter Stuyvesant (Director-General of New Netherlands) repurchased an entire peninsula, known as Bergen Neck and gained charter to a village at Bergen (1661).
~1664: Bergen was threatened on August 27, 1664. The English wanted the Netherlands to surrender New Amsterdam or all of New Netherlands. Due to lack of weapons and people for a proper militia, the English captured Bergen.

13 Colonies

~1664: England seizes NJ from the Netherlands.
~1673: Recaptured by the Netherlands. But in 1674, the war ended with the Dutch Treaty of Westminster. They gave England the colony due to financial insolvency.
~1676: New Jersey is divided into East and West Jersey due to religion. West being the Quakers and East being the Puritans. (Alex was West NJ)
~1702: Under the Rule of Queen Ann, East and West NJ were united and became the Royal Colony. The governors was Edward Hyde, Lord Cornbury, but he was recalled to England due to taking bribes and speculating on land.
~1708: NJ was then ruled by the governors of NY, but this infuriated the settlers in NJ, accusing them of favoritism to NY.
~1701-1765: NJ got into a little argument with NY regarding the borders of their colonies. (New Jersey-New York Line War)

Revolutionary War

~At first, NJ didn't want to rebel against England (most of the settlers were from England that still had a sense of loyalty to the King). But soon she sided with America.
~NJ was the one who fought the most out of the colonies. (296 battles) Besides fighting, she was also helpful with disrupting British supply units along with providing food, ironworks, and powder.
~1776: Battle of Trenton helped boost the American's confidence and changed the tide of the war.

Industrial Revolution Era

~NJ's economy mainly focused on agriculture
~Paterson became the cradle of the Industrial Era and became known as "Silk City" for its high production of silk. (Other renowned cities during this era were Newark, Trenton, and Elizabeth)

Civil War

~Although the Quaker population in NJ did not like slavery, NJ was the last northern state to abolish slavery. And although they passed an act for gradual abolition of slaves in 1804, it wasn't until 1830 that most slaves were free.
~At first, she refused to ratify the Amendments that banned slavery.
~Also she was one of the few states to vote for Stephen Douglas instead of Abraham Lincoln in the 1860 election, and she voted for George McClellan in the 1864 election.

NJ: Yeah I guess, it just annoys my people to no end. And the Super Bowl is like a huge gathering of people to a stadium to watch American Football. Some people go there and some watch from their house. Parties, Booze, Bets, Cheering to no end.

NJ: Its because of its origin. It can be traced back to rugby football. Although we use our hands and pretty much most of of our upper body for tackling and stuff, our feet are pretty much the most useful for scoring, running, and kicking.
