tumblr works by tags, which is how deviantart also works. You'd just have to search for Mystery Skulls or Ghost or whatever, and you should find a good plethora of art or blogs about it. It is true, finding specific content would be difficult. No one really comments, they either reblog with what they'd like to say, give each other private mesages, or there'll be some kind of feature to 'answer a question' in a post.

Tumblr is really just a good site to get info on current events, see cute/cool pictures and comics, and rant or blog about whatever you want all in one package. It's a good site to sorta display WIPs, or just talk if you have some people following you for your stuff. Really I can't say, it's just a good place to gather a mix of things you like and view them conveniently.
