I'm using DAZ 3D. I got it about a year ago. It's completely free and comes with a bunch of great content. You can buy additional models. Most of mine came from the DAZ store and Renderotica. But also Renderosity. I specifically wanted to get into making my own torture porn graphic novels and this seemed a great way to do it. But also, after having learnt a bunch of 3D modelling and animating skills I also provide animations and CGI for TV shows. So, whadaya know .. making your own porn can actually cultivate skills that can be used anywhere

Check it out .. DAZ 4.8 comes with awesome features, and it's still totally free. There's a tonne of great youtube vids on how to use it, from basic to advanced. And their forum community is great at answering questions fast. There's a learning curve to be sure .. but it's not difficult, it's actually quite fun and after just a year of tinkering .. I'm now doing the stuff you see I have no prior skill.

I draw hentai - or learning to, but yeah suprisingly it opens up to new skills that become so handy when drawing other things. Like anatomy! (Which I still struggle on ugh)

I kind of want to do models (probably not porn for now, but it's tempting) of like my RPG characters from WoW, TERA, and just my own ocs you know? Say if I wanted to do an MLP character, could I make that model? Or are they only mostly humanoid?

And what kind of computer do you need to run it? I haven't got state of the art technology - mainly just a computer that can run games (will need a better graphics card eventually)

Well .. I'm kinda spoilt because I have 4 computers. 2 iMacs, one Mac Mini .. and a VERY expensive Mac Pro (Late 2013 model) that was bought for me by a movie company .. I'm a film editor .. and composer as well. (Don't ask .. I've no idea why I end up doing everything!). So, the Mac Pro is the main computer I do things on. However I need to point out that you don't need a super powerful computer to do model with. The Mac Pro lets me get stuff done faster .. but the same sessions can be run on my Mac Mini .. it'll just take a lot longer to process.

As for modelling your own characters. DAZ is designed for you to buy pre-bought content and manipulate it to your specification. So there are certain limitations, although I'm finding it's actually not difficult to get the kind of design one wants if you have the parts. So the other angle is to actually model your own .. which you can do but that requires you to learn rigging, building the model and setting all it's parameters and limits. This is all worth while learning .. I guess for me I'm happy just to tinker with the pre-bought stuff .. I'm a preset junkie . I want to eventually learn how to build my own furniture and such to use in my scenes.

So DAZ isn't designed for you to build your own models. But there's nothing stopping you downloading Blender .. another free program which is incredibly professional .. but all a real bitch to learn. If you can trawl through the tutorials then you can do amazing things with it. And anything you make in blender, can also be used in DAZ.

There it is. Free programs .. and all they take is time to learn. And a better computer will of course be an asset .. but you don't NEED the fastest and brightest.

When I have time I think I might have a go at downloading and seeing how it runs. If it runs, that's cool! If it doesn't, that's ok

I used WoW Model Viewer, but that's all pretty straight forward for you - I haven't done any actual designing but I've seen all these anime 3-D models and stuff and I'm like, I should try that.

Well  DAZ is free .. nothing stopping you giving it a try. I did that and now I'm making my own comics, movies and working for TV shows doing CGI with it

And I'm a composer ?!? .. I got into film wanting to write music scores (I have 10 albums on the iTunes store). So if someone like me with zero background in CGI can step into it and learn it .. I think anyone can.
