How was Darkness of Dragons, assuming you've read them?

Apologies for the late reply! But yes I have read it! And I'll be honest, after digesting it, I'm actually pretty satisfied with it. I can understand other people's concerns with how rushed things seemed and how off the second arc in general was, but I still love Tui's writing, and the ending ended up being surprisingly satisfying. Of course the series can't end though, and I'm curiously awaiting what Tui has in store for us next.
Any specific point to start with?

Honestly, the ending was something I DID NOT see coming at all. It felt a tiny bit rushed, but I agree with you on the Tui's writing part. As for Darkstalker's fate, I personally think that he now has another chance in a more peaceful time. About the graphic novel, do you like it's art style?
Also, what do you think of Darkstalker's fate?

Honestly it's so unexpected we should've saw it coming, in a way. I mean the last arc wrapped up in a very out of the box way, none of the sisters got picked and it ended up being someone we never heard of before, so for Darkstalker's fate to be what it was, I think it really works. It's none violent, which completely throws off a lot of people, as he became such an ultimate evil that lots of people wanted him dead, but at the same time, it was the death of Darkstalker. That dragon no longer exists, thank god. I'm kind of iffy with all the animus magic that was used throughout the second arc, always felt a bit too
deus ex machina, but I guess I'm okay with it since it's just a part of their world. I don't know, I guess I was too used to the first arc having magic be this fantastical thing, even for a world of dragons, but The second arc made it kind of common place. Oh well. But I do like his fate. It was satisfying to me, and quite honestly even more brutal than I could have imagined, in a way.
What did you think about the love triangle?

Zerodestiny1-6-9 In reply to SolsticeFlames [2017-09-08 05:38:49 +0000 UTC]
Yep. Darkstalker is "dead" in a way that we have never reall thought about, and I'm happy that Darkstalker's gone and given a new chance (sorta). But yes, the magic in the second arc kinda makes me a bit... you know. It's as if Animus magic were used as a plot device to get the protagonists out of any trouble (like you said, Dues ex Machina). I'm also happy about Darkstalker's fate.
As for the love triangle, I didn't really care about it (sorry if this offended you). Honestly, I never really shipped anyone, and I'm glad that Moon is happy with her choice.
For the first arc, out of the three SandWing Princesses, who do you think shoul've been queen?

SolsticeFlames In reply to Zerodestiny1-6-9 [2017-09-08 06:17:17 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, gotta love how Tui thinks outside the box, even if it's through the use of Deus ex animusa. I'm just glad he's "dead" and his fate was actually pretty satisfyingly cruel. He lost his powers, his size, and most importantly, his identity. And it's pretty much magically permanent. His memories of Foeslayer and Clearsight are gone forever, and any other good thoughts and memories he ever had. It's kind of a pretty fitting punishment for such a character. It's worse than death, because at least with death he technically would've taken his love for a Clearsight to the grave, but here, he forgets her. (Though, to be fair, I think she was better off without him anyways. It doesn't matter how much you love someone, if you manipulate them and disregard their concerns and opinions, you don't deserve them)
Pff, oh you're completely fine! I'm in the same boat as you, I'm not into love triangles at all. I don't think they work well in a young adult or children's book setting, or at least they haven't been executed well. I'm fine with romance when it has actually chemistry and as long as it doesn't drive the novel (unless it's focus or major theme is love of course) but love triangles are just so bland, and forced, and sometimes really questionable. In this case the love triangle seemed forced to me, and uncessesary, and turned this fantastic fantasy tale into a teenage romance drama. With all the characters being motivated by their love of Moon, and not because they don't want everything they ever loved and known to be destroyed by the ultimate threat. It was especially annoying in DoD, and much lighter in Winter Turning. Personally I think Moon should've stayed single. I mean it's not like a love triangle has to conclude one way or another all the time, for someone who loves out of the box solutions, why not have Moon say, "I like you guys, but I'm fine being on my own." Or "I'm not at the age to decide this stuff yet." I'm glad Moon's happy too, I just wish it wasn't so forced. The ending sounded like Moon was obliging to the will of shippers as opposed to her actual character. But oh well, I digress. As for shipping, I don't do a lot of that myself, only one I'm personally behind is Clearsight and Listener. I just feel so bad for Clearsight, and I like their dynamic. I know they were just shown as friends, but I don't think it's off to think it could've developed into something more, at least something more stable than what was going on with Darkstalker.
As for SandWing queen, I answered this before, but it's still Burn. Blister was too untrustworthy and powerhungry, Blaze is too airheaded and gullible, but Burn is strong, relatively smart, and, if under the right advisors, probably would've been a good queen.
What do you think was the weakest or rather laziest use of animus magic (as used by Tui) to solve a problem in the second arc? (If this question makes sense)

Zerodestiny1-6-9 In reply to SolsticeFlames [2017-09-10 01:58:36 +0000 UTC]
Well, for Tui, you can never see what's coming. But yes, that fate is actually a pretty well-written one. But I agree with you; Clearsight is better without Darkstalker and Darkstalker kinda deserved this fate.
Oh, my XD I've never really ran into someone in the fandom who doesn't really care about love triangles. But yes, sometimes, when it's executed well, it could be quite good. But other times... it's quite a risky move, because, like you said, it seems forced.
My bad, my memory isn't that great XD But honestly, what do you think of Burn as a character?
As for the weakest use of animus magic, I can't really remember, but if Diamond's gift counts, it's that. Otherwise, I'm not too sure. There are way too many instances of animus magic. You?

Farewell Darkie, you will not be missed whatsoever~
Oh really? That's interesting! Though I guess I haven't either! I'm a plot and character person as opposed to a romance person, like I said, if it's done well I'm all for it, but life's got more to it than soppy team romance. I'm especially fine with other uses of love too, like family dynamics, and platonic love. Cause, you know, that stuff exists too and is equally important and can drive a character's motive as well.
It's fine! I don't mind being asked things twice, it gives me an oppurtunity to think about the question again, see if I have any new thoughts, or changed thoughts for that matter. As for her as a character; I thought she was much more interesting than Blister or Blaze, and would love a Winglet on her. For being the embodiment of Brawn, she has a lot more going for her character wise. Blaze and Blister are way too much of their embodiments, and have little to no character development beyond being a beautiful airhead, or a hyper intelligent person. I mean, Blister's evil, so there's that, but you can be smart and not evil. You could be smart and evil and interesting. You could have more personality traits, but I guess you don't have to.
Oh you mean imprisoning Foeslayer and doing the trial things? Yeah, that's pretty weird. Weirder yet, out of all the plot twists, that one I'm actually okay with. As for me, I thought Chameleon's shapeshifting was pushing the Dues es Machina meter, but I don't think it was weak, I guess. So for me I think it'd have to be the ending spell, the soul protecting one. I think it was an all too nice way to wrap things up, and while I do think being selfish with magic and thinking it can solve all your problems is a one way ticket to abusing said magic, I don't like the idea that you can use magic, to solve the problem of abusing using magic. I mean I get it, and I like the message about being selfish and how it leads to bad paths, and the thing about thinking in black and white and thinking for yourself without others' input is bad, I don't like the magic safeguard. Seems too easy.
Also Darkstalker's super soldiers, how did they not just obliterate all the IceWings instantly. Are they super soldiers, or just really really strong? Like the battle went on for a seemingly decent amount of time given the fact that the IceWings did not have super powers.

That first line though XD
But yes, I'm more focused on plot instead of romantic love. Other types of love are pretty great if they are well-written. But I have to say, platonic love is one of my favourite type of love. Romantic love usually isn't too involved in the plot, but platonic love for friends and family are necessary to the plot in most works.
Thanks for answering this. Honestly, I'd like to get to know Burn more (in a winglet or something else). Out of all three, we know her the least from the books, but I like her relationship with her mother. If I remember correctly, Burn and Oasis had a close bond, and that may be the reason Burn became ruthless. It's likely that Oasis' death and maybe other factories changed Burn to the dragon she is in the war. I agree with you on the "more character development is needed" for the other two sisters. Do you have any headcanons about her?
Yeah, that, and the narwhal horns that heal frostbreath. Chameleon's shapeshifting is a bit... let's just say out of place compared to the first arc. Maybe Tui's trying to drop an anvil about that message. But it makes Chameleon much harder to track down and he could easily use that to get out of most situations.
I have to admit, somehow, the IceWings put up a pretty great fight against super-powered NightWings. Maybe the NightWings didn't exactly have proper battle experience. I don't really know.

What can I say? I really hate Darkstalker. And it goes pretty far. I can't even enjoy art of him because I just hate him. I take issue with highly selfish and narcissistic people for personal reasons, and with him being all powerful, it takes it to another level that just deeply distresses me.
I can agree to that.
No problem! I always enjoy sharing opinions and hearing other people's. Yeah, her relationship with her mother was one that really stood out to me, especially for her basic character of the bloodthirsty warmongerer. I don't really do headcanons, mostly because I can never really think of many on my own. I usually just accept other people's if I like them. I can't think of any I've seen for Burn though.
Oh! Almost forgot that was part of it. Yeah, it does seem pretty convenient. I mean, it makes sense, and it fits as all the other powers have things to cancel them out. Brightsting cactus, heatproof MudWings, related RainWing venom canceling out, Skyfire. So I don't see why not there, but I do see where you're coming from. I agree. Well that's kind of what happens after he's first revealed, but he's not the brightest, and is pretty greedy, so his movements can be predicted. Also he tends to be pretty inconspicuous. Also the NightWing name is just on the nose.
Maybe? Maybe the earings block part of the magic? I'm not sure. I mean I understand they can't all just be slaughtered, but if they're magic super soldiers, I'd imagine they'd be able to finnish things quickly, even without proper battle training.
What did you think of the ending with Jerboa?

Zerodestiny1-6-9 In reply to SolsticeFlames [2017-09-14 10:42:56 +0000 UTC]
Honestly, I think it was pretty unexpected. I have to admit that I didn't see that coming a mile away. But if it's like that, then Jerboa II (the one we're talking about) is about 3000 years old. I'm not too sure. I think she was the first Jerboa's daughter.
By any chance, have you seen any fanfics about Burn?
