No. If the ads are bothering you, install adblock to your browser. Core membership is especially helpful if you want to have exclusive benefits like the things listed here: www.deviantart.com/core-member…
Most people use it to customize their profiles . But it takes programing skills to do that. 
Your profile looks a bit incomplete over all at this point. If you want it to look a bit more fancy you can look for inspiration on other user's pages. 
To edit your page, just click "edit page" at the top right of your user page and play around with the widgets. There are many different types that let you do many different things. Some are core exclusive but the basic and important ones are free. ^^

Also it might be worth mentioning that deviantart is undergoing a bit of a (slow) change at the moment: www.deviantarteclipse.com

Oh, I could name the usual things here like comment a lot, put your art into groups, but let me tell you a secret instead. They're called llamas. And they are your best friends.
One Click Llama Button
This script lets you give llamas to people in one click. If you give tons llamas to people (and this script makes that very easy to do) lots of people will visit your page. ^^
