Lord Soth's from the Dragonlance mythology...He'd actually fit better as a Death Knight I guess than a Lich since he doesn't have a phylactery.

Always one of my favorite Dragonlance characters...and the fact that he's also lord of one of the Ravenloft realms (Ravenloft was always my favorite campaign setting) he was always double cool undead to me. Acerak...he's definitely a lich, half balor and half human...he's the big boss in the classic Tomb of Horror's module as essentially a floating skull. I think (it's been years since I played this adventure) he'd gotten to the point of demilich by then...one of THE hardest adventures I've gone through.
I always thought it was kind of cool to see what essentially amounts to a lich in Harry Potter's Voldemort, splitting his soul into different objects to protect himself from death...I wonder if Rowling's a DnD fan

Thanks, I read up on him. Seems there are quite a few famous liches recorded here, as well. Very interesting, and helpful as well- I play a character who will someday be a lich and I need to flesh out the specifics.

I played a lich once...fun roleplaying, we started as lvl 1 characters in Dragonlance, I played a Minotaur wizard of the Black Robes (odd choice I know)...as we got to around level 25 we started doing that, I became a lich, another Psionicist became a psionicist lich (thanks to the ravenloft guide to the lich), a warrior was betrayed by a loved one and eventually became a death knight and a monk became a Vampire. Playing an uber-powerful group like that had some great roleplaying possibilities. Had a lot of run in's with people that recognized my fear aura, or when we had to go into a church.

That sounds fun! I RP one on various forums right now- I wish I could play D&D, it sounds so fun.
I didn't actually learn about the fear aura until later, which is just as well, because my lich would probably learn to suppress it most of the time. XD

I miss it, last time I played a real session was back in the 2nd edition days before the 3rd edition ever came out. You'll want to stock up on illusion spells, they really help hiding what you are.
