# About me
Hi, I'm Sloan!I'm not actually new to dA, I joined in 2010 to share my drawings/paintings. I've been interested in BJDs since 2009, and now that I have my first doll, I'll be sharing her pictures on here!
I'm also using this account to follow other BJD artists/photographers work. I may not be TOO active on here, with this being a side account, but I'll try and be a somewhat active watcher. :'3 It's hard to stay away!

Oh, it's my pleasure! And likewise. C: It's a little tricky actually meeting DOA users here, though I'm finding it harder on DOA since I'm not used to forum communities, heh...

Ahh the wait can be killer xD Sometimes it passes by in the blink of an eye, and sometimes two days seem like two years xDD

Yesss! I think December should go by quickly for me because of holiday preparations and other things we (my family) have to do this month, but... I have no idea about the other two or so months I'll have to wait. D: Though I suppose the wait could be a lot worse. What's the longest you've had to wait for a doll to arrive?

Can I ask when you ordered her? Sometimes Iplehouse goes fast, and sometimes it takes a while. When I ordered in February I put two JIDs on layaway and they arrived the end of May. Which is a good threeish month (end of Feb-May) wait time, especially since they were short on staff due to someone being out on maternity leave. (Their English representative is, I should say, very important not only for when people have to ask her questions but apparently she does some of the other work as well. Faceups, I think it was?) Plus layaways usually takes longer, since most companies wont start processing the doll until after it's been paid off. I asked a friendly question toward the beginning (middle?) of May just about when they thought they might start (and saying I understood how backed up they were, and that I was in no hurry) and I got a shipping notice like, a week later. It was nice.
As for my longest wait. I ordered a SOOM Nephelin when she was released, and didn't get her until the November of the next year. So, a year wait. And she wasn't as pretty as I thought she would be (though some of that was the bitterness of the long wait; they kept giving excuses as to why she wasn't ready.) I sold her a few months later and to this day I can't look at the sculpt and find it pretty, no matter how nicely they're done.

I just ordered her December 2nd, without layaway (but with a custom make up). I was going by Iplehouse saying it takes 90-working days to prepare the doll or whatever, but this morning on the DOA waiting room thread I noticed that some dolls from this autumn were shipped out earlier. So perhaps there won't be as much as a wait (but I'm not letting myself get my hopes up too much for that---)
I read about when they were short staffed before I ordered. That kind of scared me. It sounded like their customer service was really poor at that time, but once their staff came back from maternity leave it sounded like things improved again. But if it takes three months when they're short staffed, that's probably the maximum time it would take, right?
That's terrifying! I'm sorry you had such a thing happen! ;_; I'm not that familiar with SOOM but I thought they would've been better than that for some reason.

So recently ordered! Wait times vary depending on weather conditions, holidays, and amount of orders per staff ratio (and difficulty.) Sometimes custom makeup can make the wait longer, and sometimes it doesn't. It kind of depends on what batch they do first, but usually a faceup (of any kind) makes the wait a little bit longer. Sometimes dolls come within a month, and sometimes they take forever so =/ (Don't order from Fairyland if you're wanting a fast doll.)
SOOM is...special 8D (And I can say that, owning a fair number of them >__> )

SloanBJD In reply to HydrangeaZubat [2014-12-05 16:14:10 +0000 UTC]
Ahhh I see. I don't really think this custom makeup would take any longer than the regular one, it's her default makeup minus some bottom eyelashes. But I guess I don't know much about how BJD companies work, so... ^_^' Thank you for the information!
I had no idea Fairyland was slow. I see so many of their dolls online, I would've never guessed... o_o Hm. But then, I mostly just looked for which dolls I liked and then narrowed my research based on that, so I haven't read about many companies yet.
I guess they are pretty special huh. XD;;

That's simple enough you probably won't have any issues C: Usually the more complicated faceups can take forever.
Each company works a little differently. Dollmore's Zaoll and Narsha line (as the ones that I know of) ship within a week of ordering. Luts can ship anywhere between a few days, or a few months. (And I love, love love Luts. They are a fantastic company. Just saying.) While things like Latidoll and Loongsoul are known for taking five or more months to get a doll.
Fairyland used to be fast. My first doll was a Pukipuki, and I ordered her with both faceplates (and faceups) wig, and clothing and she came within the three month usual limit. But that was four years ago and their popularity has really exploded between now and then making orders slow, and, unfortunately, the quality of their products as well as their customer service go downhill =/

I can imagine. XD
I was actually considering getting a Kid Delf before I settled on a JID. I seem to be drawn to their dolls. XD But their face-ups weren't what I was really looking for, and for my first doll I really wanted her to come with a face-up. (Especially since I have no access to proper face-up supplies here to do anything myself :< Argh! Small towns!). But back to wait times... I guess 3 months isn't the quickest but could be a lot worse.
That makes sense. You'd think they'd hire more staff to be able to keep up with the popularity, though? Or find a way to limit their orders so they can handle everything... D:

I love my Kid Delf C: The roomate and I own a total of four, with many more planned. I get the wanting a doll to come with a faceup thing. I find them lovely blank, but it can be hard to do things and I know a lot of people that are creeped out by blank dolls so xD
Companies hire what they can afford, or something. Most aren't held in large locations either, so there isn't a whole lot of space to work with.

SloanBJD In reply to HydrangeaZubat [2014-12-07 21:59:32 +0000 UTC]
They can definitely be lovely blank, or even with a minimal face-up, but I don't want to creep out family/friends/etc. Plus I'd be worried about not bonding with her, and then having to wait an extra time to send her head away to some stranger to have it painted, etc... ^_^;
I was thinking that, if they became that much more popular they might be able to afford more staff... but after I thought about it, I realized that they might not make that much off of them. And I think you're right about the space too.
Do you happen know if there's somewhere I can read about how companies make ball joint dolls and such? Or words I could search for, even. I know there's tutorials, but I'm wondering more about how businesses handle it rather than how to actually do it. I've known basic stuff about bjds for years now, but I feel like such a noob still. D; And if not, that's okay, I'm mainly wondering if something like that exists haha.

HydrangeaZubat In reply to SloanBJD [2014-12-08 06:07:33 +0000 UTC]
Yeah that's understandable C: Company faceups can be really nice too *u*
I've never actively gone searching for such information? I uh, don't have much skills with anything art related so sculpting has never been of interest to me xD You might just try looking into sculpting a doll, or sculpting a BJD on google. There should be tutorials. (And a lot of Artist Dolls like Lillycat or Merrydolround have preview photos and in work progress shots of their dolls.)
If you mean in general though, basically draw out designs, and then sculpt them. Some companies uses 3D programs, and some still use various clay bases but either way it takes talent and time. That's about all I know I don't think many people know much more but they might.

Yeah! Probably doesn't compare to a one-of-a-kind face-up by somebody, but it's a start. XD
Ahh, I see. I guess I'll maybe try looking up Lillycat and Merrydolround and some tutorials then. Thanks ^^

One of a kind faceups usually aren't one of a kind Half the faceup artists I know do the same faceup over and over again for different people anyways sooo xD
