Hey, I found your old forum thread. Did you end up grabbing a tablet monitor for drawing on? What did you go with and how is it so far?

SkyAboveUs In reply to starsworne [2015-12-16 20:42:21 +0000 UTC]
Hey there! Oh man, I don't remember why I said, haha. I had quite the tablet adventure. I first tried out the Surface Pro and the screen was really nice and the colors were sharp and great, but it was so small, I had a problem working with its limited space. So I decided to get rid of that and try the Ugee 19" monitor for $400. The size was FANTASTIC and it was pretty accurate as far as drawing with the pen, but the color was so drastically different from my monitor. When I'd draw with blue, it'd turn out purple. When I'd try peach, it'd turn out yellow. I'm not sure if I got a defective one, but their customer service told me that due to the quality of their color panels, the huge difference in color is normal. I'm not really sure what that is supposed to mean, but I just couldn't do it. SO I RETURNED THAT TOO, haha, and just ended up getting the Cintiq. SO terribly expensive but you know what...? I love it. It's double the price for 13" of screen, but it's like five thousand times quality. I love the way it feels, it's screen is so sharp and beautiful and drawing on it is a dream. Even though it's only 13", it still doesn't feel too small. I can't complain about it, and now, after comparing it to the Surface Pro and Ugee monitor, I can see why it's $800. I'm very pleased. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!!

That's quite the story. xD I'm either gonna stick with the tablet I have (a non-screen UGEE L1000 that's treated me well for the year I've had it so far!) or maybe consider taking my chances with a low end one myself. I'm willing to spend hours calibrating colors and screens, but not to spend more than $400 on this, lol.
I am happy that you are happy with your purchase, though! Did you notice a difference in your art quality with your new hardware?

SkyAboveUs In reply to starsworne [2015-12-16 22:19:40 +0000 UTC]
Haha. Yeah, I had their customer service leading me through the color settings and contrast and brightness, but nothing they said helped. OTL Amazon accepted my return back with no problems, so it's worth trying out at least! I really liked it besides the color thing, but most of the reviews on Amazon didn't seem to notice, so maybe I just got a bum one. The only thing if you get the Ugee is that it doesn't come with an HDMI cord. I think it was a DVI?? So you need a HDMI to DVI adapter, which is like $5 on Amazon. They mention it in the description somewhere... I hear people have good luck with Yiynova too, but I didn't feel like messing around anymore, haha. I think I saw that one for $500 on Amazon.
I had an Intuos for ten years before this one and so the monitor was quite the difference. I've always considered myself more of a traditional artist; I've always loved being able to see and feel what I was drawing, rather than the digital way that has kind of a disconnected sort of thing going on that I learned to LIVE with, but never learned to like, you know? I feel like I work faster with the monitor and I just feel...happier?? Haha. It's more traditional and natural this way. I've only done one piece with it, but my lines were better and everything just seemed to work out easier and without as much struggle. I dunno, I LOVE ITtttt. I definitely recommend trying even the Ugee! I hope the color works out for you!!

Thank you! I found out about fully art usable portable tablets and now I'm trying to decide if I will hate myself if I also splurge and go for the Cintiq... the Companion 2 model, non-hybrid.

I'm trying to find another pressure sensitive tablet computer that has physical buttons (express keys, hot keys, etc) but so far no luck. How has no one else besides Wacom decided they should add physical buttons to tablets??

HAHA. That's so far from the $400!! Oh! The Surface Pro is kind of like the Companion, that's why I got it at first. Apparently the Surface Pro 1 and 2 (but not 3 or 4) have Wacom technology in them and have like...1024 levels of sensitivity? Or something. It worked pretty nicely; I liked it a lot. I was able to use it in SAI and Photoshop without a problem, it was just a small screen. My sister uses it for art now though. But the Surface Pro 1 is on Amazon for $460 or something like that and it comes with a pen. That was my first stop in my adventure, haha. It was pretty cool since you can take it with you anywhere and everything's all built in, but yeah, like...if you have the money, then I'd just go for the Companion in the first place. Can't beat Wacom for art. But if you wouldn't mind the smaller screen and are interested in the price, the Surface Pro might be worth looking into! This is the exact one I got:
www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Surfa…
Ahhhh...the buttons. Yeah, the Surface doesn't have that. OTL

I WAS TRYING TO TALK MYSELF INTO SOMETHING LIKE THAT ACTUALLY
but the more I think about it, the more I realize I have really come to rely on those buttons for digital art, and also appreciate the 'dead space' housing around the screen to have more to hold onto when drawing.
/wilts
I'm gonna spend lots of money on art.
I thought this was going to be a cheap hobby.
/cries, but in an excited sort of way
I'm trying to call in a $2000 debt a family member has to me from a couple years ago, even offering to lessen the full amount to just the cost of the Companion. Then I won't even notice that I spent the money, rofl.

And hey! That'd be nice! Good luck! I hope you love it! I think the Wacom site is having a deal on some of their Companions right now.

I actually have just been reading some reviews on Amazon and now I'm not sure at all... Apparently people have really, really awful luck sometimes with battery/charger issues with the Companions - though sometimes it seems like they might have the Companion 1, or the Hybrids, and are for some reason posting on the Companion 2 (full Windows) pages. It's really hard to tell.
but now I am afraid to drop that kind of money
before I was like 'welp, it's gonna be awesome and it's Wacom so it should be awesome'.
-growls in annoyance-
Anyway, I am happy you found the device for you! Congratulations and happy holidays. ^^

Hehe! Why thank you. I HOPE SOON IT'LL HAVE NICE THINGS IN IT. Last night, like...an hour before midnight, I found someone in a forum talking about a FREE shutterfly book thing that expired that day, so I was like OH MGMYOSHS I have to make one of my art!! ANDDDD...So I was looking through my gallery, and wow. I always feel like I never improve, but MAYBE I JUST MIGHT. It was encouraging. I'm hoping that in a few years from now, I'll be able to look at what I'm posting in the beginning here and go, "wow, that's crap." IT IS STRANGELY MOTIVATING. I mean, it wasn't as huge of a leap as some of the ones I've seen on Tumblr, but at least there's something. I also was able to order the shutterfly book too! I hope it turns out alright, I've never used Shutterfly before. Did you end up doing that one weird metal canvas thing? Mine SHOULD'VE come in the mail YESTERDAY, but it's still not here!

You're already filling it up with lovely art! I am still struggling to finish one piece by the end of this month. And yeah, you have improved! I know what you mean though, about how it often feels like you're not improving at all, but then I go back and look at some of my older work and feel a little better, haha. That Shutterfly book sounds neat, let me know how it turns out! I've never had my stuff printed before, and don't really plan on it anytime soon but I'd still like to know juuuust in case. For future reference. I didn't get that metal print! I wanted to print out a piece I did for my mom, but the file I found on my usb was corrupted. And then I got distracted with New Years and I just totally forgot about it. :c Oh well. Did yours arrive by now?

Haha, well, your art is exquisite and well worth the wait! I hope it's going well for you and your hands are feeling alright. D:
Thanks!! You too!! Good thing for our old art to shock us into appreciating our more recent stuff, haha. I looked at that site for the metal print and it looks like the promotion is still going on even though they said it was going to expire last year, haha. Oh well. The shipping is still kinda expensive but it's still there if you ever find a non-corrupted file of the piece you want. I posted pics of them in my latest journal! I'm quite fond of how it turned out. The quality looks nice even if it's a little small. No way would I pay regular price though. DANG. Costco seems to have good deals too, though I can't speak for the quality. I'm tempted to order a piece and pick it up over the weekend, but I don't really have any pieces I like that I didn't put in the book already... Oh ho...man. Would it be alright with you if I used one of your pieces? I'd just put them up on my wall. It's totally alright if that'd weird you out. I feel weird just asking, haha. Or do you sell them? I don't know! How does it work?! I don't want to gyp you out of anything! Hm. I was thinking I want those three you've done of Ian and then I really just can't get that Wandering Tree one out of my head, haha. Ugh. Now looking at your gallery, I like them all, haha. I'll just have an entire wall dedicated to your artwork, hahahaha. WELL, if you wouldn't mind, of course. Seriously, don't worry if it makes you feel uncomfortable. I totally don't want that.
Oh man, I'm all totally excited now that I found sites to do this. I've always wanted to print art, but never really looked into HOW to get it into my hands. It makes art seem like 100% better, haha.

Nooo my hands are STILL aching. ;A; It usually isn't this bad! I wasn't on the computer at all this weekend, normally that would be enough rest for them but not this time. I must have arthritis or carpel tunnel or BOTH. I am really going to have to try those gloves you were talking about. Although it isn't as bad as it was yesterday, or even just this morning.
Ooh I didn't know the promotion is still going on, that's good to know! I don't think I'll be able to retrieve the original file from my broken hard drive anytime soon, but maybe I'll get something else printed. I didn't know you could get prints at Costco either. And of course you can print some of my work, I'm really flattered! I don't know much about prints at all, and I don't sell them. Even if I did, I wouldn't charge you anyway, haha! Especially the art of your own characters. I trust you, so I don't mind sending over the original sized files, and you can scale them as you like. I think I already sent you the full sized Ian and Aidan chibis, right? Ugh, but I don't have the original of the birthday pic from the year before, I didn't back that one up before my computer died. ;_; I do have the other Ian one though, and the wandering tree of course. If there's anything else, let me know! Also, what file type should I send them as?
And let me know how they come out! I might want to get some prints eventually, so I should probably keep an eye out for places with good quality and prices. I know nothing about this stuff. I think I also need to get used to drawing as huge as possible, haha.

Oh no!! D: I'm sorry they still hurt you! HEY. So. I have a strange idea. You know how I am really into essential oils?? I am wondering if they'd be able to help you...and like...I know I keep mentioning it, but are you against it in any way? Like...if I were to send you a mixture of some would you be interested in trying it? I have an empty lavender bottle here that I used up and I could make a little concoction in it and send it over. I have this book that I really like that is like, "IF YOU HAVE THIS ILLNESS...USE THIS MIXTURE" and all the ones I've tried so far help me and then my dad has like...ugh, I forget what it's called, but some form of arthritis in his shoulder and this mix from the book seems to help the pain. I'm not sure if it'd do anything for you. It seems like certain oils affect people in my family differently, but I mean...it's possible it could?? THE BOOK says for arthritis to use lavender, marjoram, and rosemary essential oil in a fractionated coconut oil carrier oil. So that's all I'd use. Ah. It seems that's for "mobility and pain" but then there is a mixture for "inflammation and pain" which is lavender and chamomile. Which would you say you have more of? INFLAMMATION OR LACK OF MOBILITY?? I've been using the mobility one and it seems to help?? If not, at least it smells nice, haha. I have all of those oils, so if you're interested, just let me know! I wouldn't mind mixing some up and sending it over for you! But if you're against it, that's okay too!! I just hope your hands feel better in any case. ;__; The gloves are nice too! There is a version at Joann's that feels basically the same; I went there to try them on for the sizing, fufufufufu.
YAYYYYY. Thank you!! I will take pics and show you when I get around to it, though pictures are kinda hard to tell, huh? WE SHALL SEE.
YES! I have the original of the Ian and Aidan chibis. Ah, okay, I just checked to see the biggest size I could get the last year's birthday pic as is and it only goes up to 5x7 before Costco is like HOLD THE PHONE, haha. I guess that's a decent size. Like a postcard! Not bad. Whaaattt?? Okay. I just tried the large picture of Ian and Aidan chibis and it will only go up to the 8x8 size before it says resolution warning. ...What the heck... OH. Holy smokes. I just looked at their optimal resolution pixel dimensions, and apparently they need 3600x5400 pixels to do a 12x18 print. For minimal quality, the need 1380x2070. That's nuts. That was the size I wanted them all in too, dang it, haha. Oh well. Well, the bigger the file, the better, so if you don't mind, I would love the ones you do have! It seems Costco only accepts jpeg, tiff, and....crap, I forget the other. BMP?? But I can easily convert them over too, so in whatever format you want! Thanks so much!!!
Yeah, I always love when artists get their stuff on like...shirts and mugs and whatnot and I'm like HOWWW. I had one friend from art school whose father was a carpenter and she drew this decal for him and he put it on his TRUCK. I was so impressed with...whatever company they used, haha. I know they're out there somewhere!! I WANT TO KNOW WHERE THEY ARE HIDING. I WILL SNIFF THEM OUT!!! And keep you updated if I find any worth mentioning.

My hands are finally feeling a lot better! Still don't feel 100% ok in my thumbs, but it's hardly aching anymore and I can actually do stuff now, I even drew a little today. But I would love to try the oils if it isn't too much of a bother for you! I didn't know you mixed them up yourself. It's so nice of you to offer. I'm not really sure what would help the most though, I guess whatever you would recommend? I have had a little bit of swelling in my thumbs and in my forearm before, but it's very rare and only in really extreme cases. Usually I just get muscle aches in the hands. Do you use the oil a lot, or only when your hands are hurting worse than usual?
I need to start using larger canvases! I usually try to work at at least A4 size, but I don't always pay attention to the size, so sometimes it ends up bigger or smaller. Around 5000-6000+ pixels I start getting a little worried because my computer starts slowing just a tiny bit.

That's really great; I'm glad to hear your hands are better. Mine have been kinda messed up and stiff lately and I thought I'd try out some wrist support thing that just came today and it's total crap. This is literally the fifth brace/support thing I've tried...I'm so fed up with buying garbage with no results. Ugh.
But yeah, it's no problem to mix up some oils. I could even take a pic of the book's page on arthritis so you can see what it says about everything. I wonder if I can just mix the chamomile in with the marjoram, lavender, and rosemary... Hm. It might smell weird. I dunno. I can't decide right now. It sounds like my hands don't hurt as badly as yours, so I just put it on when they're bothering me like...several times a day. "AS NEEDED"?? I dunno. When I'm on my period, I use basically the same mix with a few differences, but I put it on my tummy like...every few hours. I can feel when it starts wearing off. I hope that this one will work for you! If not, at least you'll have a nice smelling blend?? Ahaa.
Wait. I just added chamomile to the others right now on my own wrist and I like it better. So...as long as you don't have an allergy to any of those, does lavender, marjoram, rosemary, and chamomile sound alright? It'll also be mixed with fractionated coconut oil to dilute them. Oh wait, and my chamomile has jojoba oil in it automatically so I guess that too. I also have cinnamon leaf, clary sage, four thieves, lemon, peppermint, rose absolute, sweet orange, tangerine, and ylang ylang III. So if you want to try any of those too, let me know. I was looking online for arthritis essential oil blend, and people are saying peppermint works nicely for the pain too. I use that for headaches, so I wouldn't doubt it. I've come to understand lavender being like...the ULTIMATE essential oil that basically does everything. So I usually just put in lavender...and add whatever else sounds nice, haha.
Ah, A4 sounds so professional. I had to look it up. That's so big. Yeah, I tried working big the other day and ThththIInnnGnsss started happening, which was a first for this computer! I was like...uhoh...don't this computer start up on me now.

Oh, you know what has been helping me out lately? A computer wrist pad thing...except I haven't ever liked any of the ones I've used in the past. Instead I've started using like...a littlePeep bunny plush . My brother laughed at it, but it's the perfect shape and size and softness!
Ok! I will leave it to your expert opinion. ;) I would like to see the page though if it isn't a bother. Mostly to see the...instructions, I guess? Like how much to apply, how long you should leave it on, that kind of stuff. It works with period cramps too? That is great. My cramps actually don't get very bad anymore though, thank goodness.
That mix sounds good to me! I actually have no idea what all that does, but I don't have any allergies to any of them, so anything you'd recommend would be fine!
It's the size of a standard sheet of paper, I didn't think it was too big. Ooh my gosh, but you know that anniversary art I did, I think it's about big enough to make a 6 foot poster. I don't even know where you would go to get something that big printed. I was scared working on it. Painting didn't lag or anything, but opening and saving took a while, and so did moving selections and layers around, and flipping the canvas.

PEEEPPPPPSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. Haha, that is one adorable plushie! Do you sit at a computer at a desk? I feel like that'd be hard to type with...but maybe I'm miscalculating the size of that. Giant. Marshmallows.
Yes! I'll like...email the pages to you or something. I'm not sure if it'll be helpful but memEHehehMeme. The bottle has a little poo poo dropper on top and I usually just do about three or four drops and then rub it in. And I just leave it on...indefinitely. Until I shower? Haha. But yeah, I'll take a pic. And oooh, do you do anything to help your cramps during your period? I use a heating pad, marjoram/clary sage/lavender mix, and advil, haha. It's manageable but if I don't do those things I'M DEAD. You can imagine my distress going to school around the days I know I MIGHT be getting my period. Ugh.
Ho.Ly. Smokes. That's huge. I don't know either! Costco seems pretty decent, but they only have their set sizes so you've got to crop them which ANNOYS me. I have a poster fetish though. Do you like posters? I don't know what it is about them, but the more the gosh darn better. I'm running out of room on my walls. I'm going to have to rearrange them so they're in a tighter format, haha.

Yep, I sit at a desk. I think either the desk is too low or maybe my chair is too high, but the peep plush is just perfect for my situation. And the plush is not as big as it looks, it's nearly the exact same height and width of my hand, from wrist to fingertips. I don't use it when I type, but I do use it whenever I'm using the mouse.
Ok, thanks! Ah, I take ibuprofen for my cramps. I can usually manage with just that (and drinking lots of water). But back in highschool my cramps were pretty bad, I'd often go to the nurse so I could lay down with the heating pad and sometimes I'd just go home if it was really bad. But they gradually became less painful over the years, I'm so glad.
Posters are cool, I like them but I don't have any. I've never gone actively looking for any that I might love enough to put up on my walls. You sound like you've got a nice collection going, it must be fun to arrange them all! And maybe a little challenging, like putting a puzzle together.

Oh! You are so good. I wish I did that, but I just slouch in my bed all the time. Even when I'm drawing. I feel kind of uncomfortable at a desk too though, so I just don't know. Maybe I need to start working out because I just constantly feel uncomfortable haha. OTL And haha, I didn't expect the little marshmallow plush to be so small! It is just so cute! Where did you get it from?
Wow, that does sound like you had really bad cramps. That is really awful to hear! I'm sorry that they were so bad. Did the nurses office have a heating pad or did you bring one? Haha, one time, I had to take an Anatomy lab exam which are NOT rescheduleable and I got my period THAT day and was in a lot of pain. So I was thinking I could just bring my heating pad and like plug it into the wall during class. I was so desperate. I ended up just buying the sticker ones that you can stick to your pants or whatever that are "activated by the air". Those don't work as well but I guess it's better than carrying a heating pad with you in class, haha. OTL Heating pads are so niiiceeee. But I didn't get any cramps the first few years! I wonder why your cramps got better... I MUST LEARN YOUR SECRET. And I wonder why mine got worse...I must unlearn my secret...
I don't get why I love posters so much. I really like graphic tees too. It's a disease. I don't even really wear them, I just like having them. But then I try to dress nice whenever I go out. Actually, when I have to go babysit my little cousin, I used to wear my Zelda shirts but I didn't last time and he brushes my hair back and was all confused and I was like Wwhaahttt??? And he just hangs his head and is like, "I was looking forward to seeing your cool shirt. Why didn't you wear it?" I was like NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Haha. Totally forgot. But ah! It's like you get to carry a bit of the thing you love with you...and all the posters, I am surrounded by my loved ones. *sobs*
