Yuugi-Mutuo [2017-02-11 02:26:22 +0000 UTC]
Things had been pretty quiet in Domino lately. All of Yuugi's friends were busy with their lives, and Yuugi... well, if he was honest he'd been feeling as though he'd sort of been left behind by everyone. But there was still one familiar person in town. Yuugi just wasn't sure that one person would want to see him.
Still, his reflective walk had brought him here, straight to KaibaCorp's main building. Thinking back... this is where his entire Duel Monsters career had started. It was... nostalgic, even if he did feel a bit awkward being here. But he steeled himself, walked through the doors, and approached the receptionist.
"Hi, um..." he scratched at his cheek sheepishly, his voice soft, "Would it... be at all possible to speak to Seto Kaiba?" as the words came out of his mouth, he realized how ridiculous they sounded. She had no reason to know who he was. Just because he'd held the title of King of Games didn't entitle him to be able to talk to a very busy billionaire who just happened to have gone to school with him and be his dueling archrival.

The receptionist quirked an eyebrow and punched a button on the intercom. "Sorry to bother you, sir, but there's a little boy here asking about you. Should I send him away?" She twiddled the pen on the desk listening to the reply. "Okay then, I'll have him wait."
"You," she said pointedly, "have a seat. The CEO will be down shortly."

Yuugi made a face when she called him a little boy, but he didn't want to argue with her. He took a seat in the lobby and looked down at his shoes. Would Kaiba be angry at him for coming and interrupting his work? Or...
He probably doesn't want anything to do with me because I'm not... him. Yuugi thought to himself, a little sadly. As much as he missed the Pharaoh, it kind of hurt that nobody was interested in him for him, that the one everyone really liked and respected was a spirit who had gone back to his own time.

Seto emerged from the elevator, his eyes scanning the floor for his mysterious visitor. He had an inkling of who it might be, but all the same he was curious as to who was brazen enough to bother him at work.
When his eyes finally settled on the seating area, he was surprised to see his old classmate sitting there. "Yuugi!" he called, "Why are you here?"

Yuugi stood up when he heard Kaiba's voice. He smiled at him even if the CEO didn't return his friendliness. His resolve was wavering, though, and he thought maybe he'd made a mistake in coming here. No, he told himself, You came here to talk to Kaiba, so just do it.
"H-Hey." he waved weakly, approaching Seto, "It's been a while. I'm sorry to bother you, I know you're probably really busy..." he avoided eye contact at first, but convinced himself to look Kaiba in the eyes. Even if the person in front of him was the president of a hugely successful company, in some capacity they had to still be peers, right?
"Are you doing well?" he asked, what little confidence he had wavering, "I mean, I know KaibaCorp is, but... are you?"

"Tch. You came all this way to ask about my well-being?" He scoffed, looking down and the boy in front of him. Not that that was a great feat in Kaiba's case. "Then again you were always the one looking out for your friends; and those you considered such."
He turned on his heel, making his way back to the elevator. "If you want to continue this conversation, I suggest you follow me."

Yuugi frowned. To be honest, this was about the reaction he'd expected but it was still disappointing to be treated like... well, a child. Even though he didn't know what he wanted to say, though, he knew he didn't want to let Kaiba leave just like that. He rushed to keep up with him.
"Look, I know you don't consider us friends, I just thought..." he didn't know what he thought, actually, his mouth was sort of just running to keep the conversation going. Truthfully, he'd been working on developing his own game since he'd finished school, but if he tried to bring that up as a business reason to talk, Kaiba would just tell him he should've gone to Pegasus. When it came down to it, Yuugi Mutou's entire relationship with Seto Kaiba revolved around one thing... "I guess it's kind of a stupid thing to come to see you about at work, I just thought maybe... you'd want to take me up on a duel?" For the umpteenth time since entering this building, once the words were out of his mouth he felt incredibly stupid.

Kaiba punched the button for the elevator and turned to face Yuugi, arms crossed against his chest. "A duel. Interesting. Something tells me that's not the only reason you came here, if that is the reason at all."
He honestly wondered what brought the King of Games here, or why he would bother him out of the blue. Everyone with an ounce of sense knew that wasting the time of Seto Kaiba was a foolhardy endeavour, and yet here the CEO stood, entertaining ideas of 'why'.

"It's... not." Yuugi sighed, deciding to just suck it up. If Kaiba laughed at him, if he told him to get out, that was that. He'd at least respect him more if he stopped beating around the bush, right?
"Honestly, I did come to see how things were going. Right now I'm not even sure why anymore..." Yuugi shook his head, "I mean, you're clearly too busy to care, anyway. I've been working on developing my own game, and... I mean, I know that's not what your company does, I just thought maybe you'd be interested." he shrugged. "Heh... even if you did want to talk, though, I have a feeling it's not 'me' that you'd want to see..."

"Any local paper could have told you my current situation but you came here in person instead." Kaiba tapped his fingers on his arms as the elevator doors slid open. "You have courage, I will give you that."
He walked briskly into the car, making a motion for Yuugi to follow. "I will give you an hour of my time and nothing more."

Yuugi hurriedly followed after Kaiba into the elevator. He was surprised the billionaire was even giving him a chance, but he was grateful for it.
"Okay... well..." he scratched his head nervously, "Since graduation, I've been working on developing my own game. I've had some input from Otogi and Bakura, and... I mean, I've playtested it with them, but I thought..." Yuugi cleared his throat and his head. He envisioned the other him, the pharaoh, saying the words instead and it gave him some confidence.
"I thought maybe you'd be interested in trying it out, taking on a challenge." Yuugi smiled, "I know it's not Duel Monsters and I know I'm not... him... but..." he forced himself to make eye contact with Kaiba, "Whaddya say?"

Kaiba stared down the boy in front of him. Was it worth his time to play his game? Perhaps. It could prove to be entertaining and perhaps worth investing in. But on the other hand there were so many things Seto had on his mind already.
The floors clicked by at a mounting pace, until the car gave it's telltale shudder of reaching the set floor. The CEO raised a semi-curious eyebrow. "Very well, Yuugi. I will test out your game."

Yuugi honestly hadn't expected Kaiba to say yes, so he was glad he happened to have the game prototype in his bag. Under the scrutiny of the tall CEO he suddenly felt very unsure of himself. But Yuugi had not held the title of King of Games for nothing.
"Great!" Yuugi smiled, "It obviously doesn't use any hologram technology or anything, but I hope you think it's fun!" As soon as the words had left his mouth he realized who he was talking to and that Kaiba would have no interest in the game being 'fun'. He at least hoped it would be enough to keep the CEO's interest.

Seto let out a non-committal grunt. "Fun is one of the lesser things I look for in a game. Strategy, complexity and variety are cornerstones, but we'll see soon enough if it's challenging for the masses."
The elevator doors slid open to reveal a fairly barren room with nothing more than a few tables littered with papers. Kaiba stepped out making his way to the furthest one, not bothering to entice Yuugi to follow.

The corporate interior is familiar; she's been here before -- she worked here before -- but it has been years since she's set foot in this city, let alone this building. She's probably unwelcome, but that never stopped Mai before, especially not when it came to him. Despite the time she spent favoring America, Domino feels like home, which is saying much because Mai never really had a distinct idea of what "home" is supposed to feel like. Home definitely is not in those dark blues that she catches the attention of, the one's she's there to see, but she'll be damned if she isn't strangely comforted by the familiarity of them -- of him.
"And here I had money that you'd been manufactured in a warehouse somewhere." The words leave her easily as if she had not left years ago without any real explanation; her smile is smug and timeless. "Happy birthday."
[ ; this is why i shouldn't be allowed to rewatch ygo -- i blame netflix for ruining my life, and the fact that i haven't really written much in a while so i produced this crap. also, it's ironic that his birthday is the day after i started rewatching. this is also more tasteful than birthday nudes ]

The CEO was slightly startled but also intrigued at the sound of a woman's voice. He knew there was only one who would ever come near him, hell, only one woman he would let near him.
"I'm surprised you're here of all places." He returned her smile with a smirk, "I thought you had left permanently for one reason or another. Certainly you didn't come halfway around the world just for me."
He relaxed his guard, knowing who he was dealing with and sat down at his desk, gesturing to the chair across from it. "It's been a long time."

"Doesn't the world revolve around you?" She asked, voice lilted in not-so-subtle amusement, though in truth it is simply good to see him. Long was somewhat of an understatement, but Mai had had a lot of growing up to do before she could face this city again -- and the people that she had grown too attached to, had even missed, in her time away.
It wasn't just Kaiba that brought her back, though, like it or not, he had played a major influence in the bulk of her time spent there. Their relationship had been tumultuous, to say the least, but he had grown on her -- like fungus at the base of a tree trunk, spiraling and taking home in one of the surfaced roots -- and the timing couldn't have been at all better.
Mai took a seat across from him, rather than on his desk like she had been prone to do years ago, taking in each similar and changed feature in his face. "I'll say. But it looks like you're right where I left you: buried in your work. Don't say my flare hadn't rubbed off on you a little! It depresses me thinking you've been glued to this chair -- especially on your birthday."

"Most of the time it does, but there is the odd moment I find it out of my grasp." He replied, with only the slightest hint of sarcasm.
He paused, unsure of what to do next. It had been a long time since he spoke to anyone about something unrelated to KaibaCorp and an even longer one since he spoke to a woman. He could probably count the times on one hand, but he wouldn't want to admit it. What was he going to say? 'How were your earnings last quarter?' 'What does the future hold for your company?' 'Any new long-term investments?' All terrible ideas.
But then the last word she said was repeating through his head: birthday. He laughed somewhat dryly. "I wish I could say it has, but my work is my life. Granted I have managed to take a couple days off here and there to work on more personal things, I have even managed to spend some time with my brother; but ultimately this is how all my days, including my birthday, go."

"I never took you as someone so willing to accept defeat like that."
It was nice to be able to sit down and talk with him like civilized people, without it automatically landsliding into some sort of argument. The distance that time had left between them made them almost strangers, she figured, or maybe it was better to think back on the brevity of good than the mountains of bad. Mai tried not to reflect on the past if she could help it. Too many mistakes, which led to more, which led to her there years after abruptly leaving.
Mai always had a soft spot for the younger Kaiba brother. She was glad, at least that the older of the two was making some time to spend with him. "How is Mokuba doing anyway?" She asked and crossed her legs as she rest her back against the seat. Something about this all felt too formal, trying to ease her way back into comfort. Her brows and the corners of her lips both quirked upwards. "So you don't have any real plans then?"
[Oh god, you and me both! ]

He shrugged. If it was something he truly desired he would already have it, or have the means to acquire it.
"Mokuba? He's doing well. I've more or less allowed him to do as he pleases for the time being. I still get his input on the bigger projects but overall he's pretty much on his own. I think he's taken quite a shine to coding, and written a few languages of his own." There was an air of pride about the CEO that differed greatly from his usual arrogance. If he was proud of anything other than himself, it was his brother.
Seto gestured at his laptop. "I have plans. They're not the most glamorous but they're plans." He threw a cautious glance across the desk. "Why, did you have something in mind?"

"Those aren't plans, Kaiba. That's work." Her tone suggested he should have known that, while her mind sprung to life to tug different ideas to the forefront so that she could figure out just what to do. If she was back in this godforsaken city -- something she thought with mild affection -- she would be sure to do it right. "You never really took advantage of that playboy bachelor thing you have going for you."
Mai removed herself from the chair and then took a seat on the edge of the desk so that her manicured nail could poke at the back of the laptop, just enough to push it forward but an inch. Part of her wanted to test her boundaries, she may have grown up, but hell if she wasn't still fun. "As a matter of fact, you're in luck. I happen to know a fantastic steakhouse."
Always good at multitasking, Mai figured celebrating was a good enough way as any to catch up.

"Plans and work often go hand in hand, Kujaku. But I suppose our definition of the word varies somewhat, doesn't it?" He watched his laptop slowly slide towards him, considering all his options. He hadn't gone out in ages, but then again he never really felt the need to. On the other hand it was his birthday and for once he didn't begrudge the idea of having company.
"Very well, Kujaku." He said, closing his laptop thoughtfully. "I will accompany you to this steakhouse you speak so highly of. I suppose my work can wait until the morning."
He stood up, and grabbed his coat from the rack by the door. At least he always looked sharp no matter the occasion.

Almost surprised that he didn't need more provocation, Mai still didn't miss a beat as she scooted off his desk and went to walk after him. She never questioned her victories, only relished -- sometimes gloated -- but this time, she settled for smiling and folding her arms as she walked out of his office with him.
"My car's just down the block," she explained and looked up at him, really able to take him in now that he was standing. He had looked sharp, but Kaiba had always had that going for him. Mai showed too much skin, but she had it so she flaunted it; her job required her to always look fantastic too. Then again, from Mai's perspective, she always had looked fantastic. Seto nodded in acknowledgment as he led the way out, punching in the security codes as the door closed. He paused at the edge of the property.
"You'll have to take the lead from here." he gestured vaguely to the streets. "I trust that your car is of some social standard?" He cringed internally at the thought of showing up in a sub-standard vehicle, especially when he wasn't driving it. At least then he could make an acceptable excuse that no one would question.

She gestured with her head for him to follow as she started down towards her car. It was a rental, she didn't know how long she would be sticking around again this time; usually it was a tournament or something that sucked her into the vacuum that was Domino City. This time she was here by her own volition; no plans, no promises, but a sliver of hope at making some kind of nest. If she was going to settle -- despite having seen the splendors of the world, and having loved every second of Paris -- this was probably the place to do it.
"What kind of girl do you take me for?" She asked, a perfectly sculpted brow raised in amusement as she saddled up to a plum colored convertible, sleek and shiny; the dark leather already stained with the vanilla undertones of her perfume, masking the scent of that New Car Smell. "Suitable enough, Kaiba? Or are you going make me call a ride?"

Seto eyed the vehicle, making a non-commital grunt. It certainly was an acceptable ride, even if he didn't want to admit it. "Tournaments keeping you in good cars I see;" He said, opening the passenger door, "or did you invest some of your prior winnings into this?"
He settled into the seat, adjusting the leg room. It had been forever since he was in the passenger side of a car, at least in the front. The limos all had more than ample room in the back seat, so he rarely ventured further.

"It's not for keeps," she said as she settled into the driver's seat. Mai hadn't had the car long, but long enough to get used to its features -- to learn and adore all the intricacies of the buttons and the layout and design. It suited her; stylish and bold, if not a bit much. "But I've been doing well when it comes to it. You should see the suite they've got set up for me. You'd think I was royal." Her tone was smug, she typically was, but she was also gushing. The lavish lifestyle had always been something she shot for.
Mai had been set for cash for ages now. She had invested parts of her winnings -- her blackmailed winnings -- to keep herself fruitful. Modelling had been an option for a while, having even made it to billboards, but it didn't stick. Always a wanderer, she flitted from town to town, continent to continent, competing in tournaments and cleaning house. It wasn't so hard when all the odds weren't stacked against her.
"Buckle up, and the radio's yours." Mai put the pedal the metal and took off towards the steakhouse, as promised.

"I wouldn't expect you to settle for anything less, where ever you might be staying." Seto laughed, genuinely, as the car picked up speed to their destination. "The glamorous lifestyle seems to suit you well, or you're well suited to it."
He reached halfway for the radio, but reconsidered. He much preferred the silence when he worked, and attempting to have a conversation while some crooner was going on and on about lost love seemed rather counterproductive. Instead he settled to watch the street lights flicker past almost rhythmically as the car zoomed along the roads.

"Some things never change," she chuckled, sparing him a side-glance, before her focus maintained to the road. Mai's memory served her well, and she adjusted to the changes of the streets that may have been made in her absence. She knew where their destination was, and felt around to finding it. Catching up with him would be nice; there was so much that she had missed out on by leaving for so long. Most of the time Mai could ease her way back in like nothing had changed, but this period of time had been long -- things had changed -- and yet she managed to get Kaiba in her car to go to dinner. It was a split situation.
She was unbothered by the fact he didn't turn on the music. That just meant her voice would be more useful. Mai started with a smirk, "Now tell me, how has the great and powerful Seto Kaiba been? And don't give me small talk answers -- I've been away long enough to know things have had to have happened. I know enough to know that I'm not the complete driving force of this city."

"No small talk?" Seto laughed dryly. "I hadn't planned on my biography being done for several years."
He tapped his fingers thoughtfully on the dashboard. "To be honest, Kujaku, there hasn't been a lot going on; at least nothing that would really interest you. When we all went our separate ways, I delve back into KaibaCorp and did what I do best. Granted I've hired a lot of interns and new staff which gives Mokuba and I a great deal more freedom, but nothing really worth mentioning.
I have plans to expand KaibaLand and build another in the United States, and I've nearly perfected a new way to duel, but these are all things you would expect from me. It's something I'm good at, why would I tempt fate?"

Although she was surprised, maybe she shouldn't have been. Things were starting to die down around the time she decided to up and leave this place, but, it had been years since she left. Part of her was disappointed that there wasn't any interesting gossip to get to, but it was probably for the best.
"A new way to duel, huh?" She asked and sped up a bit so not to miss the light. "I don't suppose you need anyone to test it out? With nothing else going on, I'm going to have to get my kicks here somehow. And who better than someone qualified?" Mai was good at building herself up; the string of tournaments she conquered before coming back to Domino was as good enough an ego boost as any though. Maybe that confidence was what allowed her to show her face back there in the first place.
While she was away, Mai found herself looking for them in magazines, just checking in to see that they were still alive. It was less personal than a phonecall, but it was easier.

Seto showed a rare hint of a smile. "It's more of a new way to experience Duel Monsters. I've created a unique environment in which to duel. While the idea of a restaurant may seem trite, I can assure you it's anything but. The tables have built-in deck readers under a protective glass so that you can eat and play simultaneously. Each booth will have VR units attached to them for completely immersive duelling. There will be weekly and monthly challenges that people can take on via AI's I have programmed. And should anyone meet those quotas, I will have an even bigger game for them to play."
He paused, relishing in his genius. "I suppose I could use someone else's input on the matter."

That was certainly impressive, but Mai expecting nothing less from Kaiba. He had always been trying to one-up himself; this was definitely different. "Sounds like you're going to have a line around the block waiting to get in there," she smiled as she pulled into the parking lot of the steakhouse. She found a decent spot and went to park her rental. For what it was worth, the car already grew on her. She just couldn't pin point how long she would even be sticking around for. Mai wanted something a bit more stable, but promises were hard to keep when you were a commitment-phobe.
After turning the car off, Mai got out and waited for him to do the same before locking the doors. She walked around to his side so that they would walk to the building together; hopefully the food was as good as she remembered. "Hope you're hungry."

He considered offering an arm for Mai to take, but thought better of it. He wasn't going to let himself go down that road again; at least not that easily.

"For your sake, I hope it's as impressive as you say." Mai's tone was light; playful. She doubted the endeavor would be anything less than he suggested. If anything, Kaiba knew how to deliver; always managing to one-up himself.
Mai led him into the restaurant. The crowd was nice, but the wait was nonexistent, which was good considering it allowed them to get seated more quickly. Her mind wasn't on anything more than catching up with an old acquaintance -- friend? -- though the city always brought back memories she would have preferred it didn't.
The city was a nightmare wrapped in sleek buildings and familiar faces, but Mai was ready to face her past -- finally. She had done a bit of that in her travels over the years.

...why must you bother me with blatant lies? I know my brother's whereabouts as well as I know my company. To come to me and suggest such an idiotic statement is a waste of my time, an insult to my intelligence, and an iron-clad reason never to speak to the likes of you again.

Unless you either a)keep him in your sight all the time, b)have a GPS installed on him, or c)you locked him in a single room, I'm pretty sure you can't always know about him 100%.
But if it's a waste of your time, why do you answer? B)

He keeps in contact with me on a regular basis. Human interaction. Something you don't seem to get if you're bothering me.
I answer your pathetic questions because if I refuse, then you tail me. Harass me. Whine at me until the very sight of your face repulses me. And then you tell me your life story; how you were abandoned, or that you're related to Yuugi, or some other bullshit. It disgusts me every second, but I cannot avoid it without repercussions.
