Ah, is that so? Which piece if I may be so inclined to ask?

In addition your anatomy is really nice, though words to describe exactly why I think so aren't coming to me.

VCR-WOLFE In reply to SethWhiteFox [2013-03-17 05:18:48 +0000 UTC]

Maybe the strong grounding in realism? Uhh that or something else, people tend to tell me what I draw looks very weighty and substantial as though it could carry itself realistically if possible.

SethWhiteFox In reply to VCR-WOLFE [2013-03-17 05:27:40 +0000 UTC]

Something to that end yes, but also not quite. I can see muscle in there and other signs that it your characters are living organisms, but at the same time they are slightly more pronounced then I think the would be in reality. What's the word I'm looking for here? Almost like... Here are the highlights of the design simplified. Instead of a lot of tiny details it's a few over exaggerated features that get the point across while being easily memorable. It's something I actually feel like a lot of designers should really try to employ. Over-detailing something isn't necessarily BAD, but a lot of times you can say a lot more with less.

Bah! Long winded response chain, go go go!

VCR-WOLFE In reply to SethWhiteFox [2013-03-17 05:29:34 +0000 UTC]

Uh, well I do stylize my work, naturally since realism isn't quite my thing. I do understand realistic approaches though so with that understanding the stylization becomes infinitely easier because you know exactly what to push and pull.

That and my whole shtick rides along simplicity, haha. The simpler the design, the more effective it is I feel a lot of the time.

I certainly was not expecting to have a nice little chat with the artist who drew the thing I favorited. Was a nice surprise. Thanks for the back and forth! Perhaps sometime we ought to chat up some more, maybe do a trade or something. I'm always looking for more artistically minded folks to talk with. Unfortunately it's mostly gamer circles I run in, which aint too bad because I do like to game now an then but I feel it isn't really helpin' my art at all.

VCR-WOLFE In reply to SethWhiteFox [2013-03-17 05:39:42 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeh haha I'm surprised a bit too, I tend to shy away from more communication hmm. Alas I don't actually have the time to do trades, I can really only do commissions due to my current standings with soul-sucking art school hahah. But idle chatter is usually very doable for me.

It's funny, I attract quite a fair bit of gamers but I am hardly a gamer, I really have only played a few games myself haha.

SethWhiteFox In reply to VCR-WOLFE [2013-03-17 05:44:27 +0000 UTC]

My mistake. I actually didn't carouse your journals or anything to see what your trade/commish statuses were. Hope that didn't come off as me trying ta get somethin' for free.

Got any off Dev IM handles? AIM/MSN/Skype et cetera et cetera?

Used to play LOADS of games when I was a kid, and am striving to become a designer in the future. In the now though I generally have too much on my plate to play games more than a few times a month unless it's something I'm REALLY excited for, which doesn't happen very often because I'm more of a retro gamer.

VCR-WOLFE In reply to SethWhiteFox [2013-03-17 05:46:54 +0000 UTC]

Oh haha that's fine! I got my statuses right up on my profile for quick reference though if you ever need to.

I do have Skype but I only give it out to people I know fairly well enough and don't have constant panic attacks around oops sorry hah.

I think the only games I REALLY play and actually got into are Pokemon, Journey, and Skullgirls. Especially Skullgirls. And Journey. Mmh. Great games that make me cry like a baby.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SethWhiteFox In reply to VCR-WOLFE [2013-03-17 05:57:02 +0000 UTC]

Journey was a great damn game, but almost not in the same way other games are. Like it's totally a different experience, and it felt pretty great. The first time I played I found a dude who stuck with me the whole time until the very end, and we got separated after the [Spoilers?] weird part where you collapse and die. [End spoilers with a question mark]

It was a game of experience rather then skill, and it felt really really good. I'd like to capture stuff like that myself.

And I totally understand only trusting certain people with yer personal contact sthuff. I chat with a few artists who actually have decent followings and for the most part they all REALLY regret ever making IM chat things public. Wont press ya on that.

Skullgirls was a game I was really hyped up for, and I actually have spoken with one of the artists who worked on the game. (Tyson Hesse. Author of Diesel and Boxerhockey, which are both pretty fuckin' awesome comics and I highly recommend them both.) It was a fighter that really had a lot of neat features built in to help people branch into fighting games. And the roster was so full of interesting characters whose movements alone showed so much personality. Then when it came out I was completely fucking broke so I just said 'LOL I GUESS I'LL NAB IT LATER' and then never looked into it again because I've pretty much been a poor boring bill paying adult ever since. : (

VCR-WOLFE In reply to SethWhiteFox [2013-03-17 06:00:15 +0000 UTC]

Journey more like hang on let me tear my soul apart.

But yeah that's probably why I prefer Journey over other games because it's not so skill-driven in its goal. Which I am so much more comfortable with.

Yeah I already read both of those ahah I'm fond of finding webcomics. I guess my favorite thing about Skullgrills is the artistry for sure, the animations and the character designs nO I'M GUNNA HAVE EMOTIONS ALL OVER AGAIN SCREAMS LOUDLY.

I need that DLC man, need it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SethWhiteFox In reply to VCR-WOLFE [2013-03-17 06:08:21 +0000 UTC]

Yeah man Skullgirls is a game with such a devotion to making sure all the TINY details are in place JUST for the players. You can tell it was a labor of love.

Annnd speaking of webcomics I just saw Homestuck stuff in yer gallery.

I feel like that is all I need to say on the matter. (Nudge nudge subtle reference)

VCR-WOLFE In reply to SethWhiteFox [2013-03-17 06:09:41 +0000 UTC]

SCREAMS AT SKULLGRILLS.

Hahah yes I am slowly dying of the Homestuck. But trust me it was a heck of a lot worse a couple years ago when all I could do was draw me and my bros' fantrolls. I still love drawing them and making new ones for the heck of it but they happen mainly in passing and most of the fantroll stuff I draw doesn't get online anymore but that's fine by me haha.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SethWhiteFox In reply to VCR-WOLFE [2013-03-17 06:16:11 +0000 UTC]

NAW MAN YOU DON'T HAVE TA CALL UM 'FANTROLLS' HUSSIE HAS STATED EVERY FANTROLL IS CANON OLOL

I actually keep stopping myself from making any Homestuck fanart because I keep wanting to make up something that fits into the comic canon, but since the elements and story are so convoluted I don't even know what is or isn't going to break the rules. So I just stick with boring normal self insert in a Sburb session. When the story is over and all the facts that can be known are known I might feel more comfortable playing with the rules of the universe and makin' up stuff, but for the time being I'm deathly afraid of any one update blasting my work, canocally speaking, to shit. Which is a silly reason not to art but : U.

VCR-WOLFE In reply to SethWhiteFox [2013-03-17 06:18:07 +0000 UTC]

I still call 'em fantrolls, since, well. I'm a fan. And I made the lil' shits I call my babies haha.

But lemme tell ya, I really fucking hate in any situation when people make their fan character interact with the canon characters and storyline, holy fuckin' hell I can't stand that. lIKE. GO MAKE YOUR OWN LIL FAN STORY IT'S NOT THAT HARD. Doesn't matter if it's Homestuck or How To Train Your Dragon or whatever the fuck, I hate hate hate that shit to death. S'just the worst pet peeve haha.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SethWhiteFox In reply to VCR-WOLFE [2013-03-17 06:23:19 +0000 UTC]

Oh no I agree. If there's one thing we do know about Sburb it's that MORE THEN GODDAMN LIKELY there are more sessions than JUST the kids/trolls shown in Homestuck. We just are only focusing on the game sessions looking around that lot.

Though I would have to say it would be kind of hard to come up with a fan character/dragon in HTTYD without coming in SOME contact with the main cast given as far as we know Burk (Spelling?) is the only viking island who actually were able to start becoming riders.

I played with some viking/dragon concepts there. Threw away most of the ideas, and the ones I didn't I kind of re-purposed for other things.

VCR-WOLFE In reply to SethWhiteFox [2013-03-17 06:27:50 +0000 UTC]

Idek I managed to slightly pull it off with HTTYD before I got bored and left my lil characters in a box haha.

I don't really make fan characters though, I prefer my own worldbuilding in the end.

[link] This one actually. I very much liked the way in which the lineart was done. Very wavy, not so much jagged edges. I'm actually not /much/ of an anthro enthusiast myself, but when I do get an opportunity to draw something with fur or lots of hair I have a lot of fun drawing like so. As a consequence I end up filling my favorites and hard drive with the stuff and grumbling due to having so few ideas that allow me to experiment with it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

VCR-WOLFE In reply to SethWhiteFox [2013-03-17 05:18:04 +0000 UTC]

Ahh shit that one was so fun haha. I can't really do jagged myself, most of my stuff tends to be very rounded and full. Uhhh I hope you don't mind my gallery now that you've watched it! I'm primarily an anthro artist in my interests ahhah gomen.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SethWhiteFox In reply to VCR-WOLFE [2013-03-17 05:21:31 +0000 UTC]

Well when I said that I really meant more like... I don't draw a lot of it MYSELF. I really really like anthro artists because I see a lot of very interesting takes on lineart and shading in anthro characters, but the draw isn't so much anthro and is more a uniqueness in each persons take on how to go about drawing anthro characters... If that makes any sense at all.

Actually recently DID come up with a character I can play around with these themes with, though I have uploaded no artwork of him... Or for that matter any artwork in a WHILE.

Ah I see. Yeh I got some subject matters I quite like that I don't draw myself for whatever reason. Hm.
