Good question. No, we do not need another Bacon.Β Many things in this are learned from coping a master then developing your own new way. However, Bacon has opened doors in painting that I feel have yet to be fully explored. Bacon himself copied Picasso's biomorphic period, the works of Chaim Soutine and Van Gogh. And we know where that led himβ¦into creating new works that no one could have imagined. I say to painters that copy a particular style?β¦.keep copying with the understanding of learning something. It's a way to work through problems physically with paint.Β

And then, since drawing is the proper way of seeing, is it actually possible to draw after Bacon, or Soutine, or even Titian? When artists dive into colore, the act of painting becomes increasingly complicated. And often instinct is the only resolve.

That is the right question to ask. While bad Bacons is not my intention, we sometimes forget that the great masters we admire were derivative in their early years as well. The road is long.
