I've never used a Nikon, so I can only offer suggestions on Canons
Well, my base wasn't very expensive, I got it ages ago and it's quite old. I spent my cash on the lens. So what I can generally say is browse around for a base that just goes up to the ISO levels you want, and isn't too grainy, and then splurge on a lens! I'm a big fan of the 70-200mm lenses, I've always seen them as worth the price.
