Neurovore [2015-05-06 19:56:33 +0000 UTC]
I recently stumbled upon an interesting series of books taking place in a fictional city-state called Ambergris. Unlike many fantasy novels, it is not "Tolkienesque" fantasy, but it appears to be in an unspecified world featuring early (l1890s/early 1900s?) human technology in the first book, but by the time the events of the third book take place, human technology is around the 1930s or 1940s. However, the books also feature a race of beings called "grey caps" that utilize analogs of human technology by selectively breeding fungi to create fungal guns, spore bombs, security cameras, and so on.
The books talk about the warring political factions of Ambergris, and the civil war that arose behind the conflict between the two major importing corporations that eventually come to control most of the metropolis. However, the grey caps eventually come to play a more prominent role again. The grey caps were the original, non-human inhabitants of the city that the human occupants have driven underground. They take advantage of the human conflicts and rise up out of the ground and eventually come to occupy Ambergris and put it under martial law and slowly start transforming the city and even its inhabitants with their strange fungal biotechnology.

The first book is called City of Saints and Madmen, and is a collection of short stories that serve as a guide as to what sort of place Ambergris is.
The second book is a novel called Shriek, and looks at the events of the war between the two most powerful corporations within the city; Frankwrithe and Lewden, and Hoegbotton and Son and the civil war that they cause between the inhabitants of Ambergris and the destruction of the city that results.
By the events of the third book, Finch, the grey caps have risen from underground and now occupy and control Ambergris. They put much of the human inhabitants into work camps, forcing them to construct a pair of massive towers in the middle of the city for an unknown purpose. The protagonist of the book is forced to investigate a strange murder case by his grey cap overlords, while Ambergris is gripped by the remnants of human resistance fighters, opportunistic gangsters, and "partials" which are humans who have willingly allowed themselves to be infected with symbiotic grey cap fungi to serve as both sympathizers and spies for the grey cap race.
Grey cap fungi is slowly destroying and corroding the remaining infrastructure of the city, and many people have become drug addicts as a lot of the fungi in the environment are being used as recreational drugs. Some of the more dangerous forms of fungi manifest themselves as parasitic diseases in their human hosts.
These books are quite recent, as they were written within the past ten years. I have heard rumors that Jeff Vandermeer is working on a fourth book set in Ambergris, but I am not sure how far along he is on it. The books themselves do well as stand-alone publications as they are not necessarily direct sequels, but snapshots of the city during various points in its history.
