# About me
I am a painter. That’s it really. Oh, wait, there is more. I am Dutch. Born in Katwijk aan den Rijn, I currently reside in Zoetermeer. Using old techniques, my work blends classical ideas and modern imagery. Sometimes the other way around.My subjects tend to gravitate around the capturing of silence and those fleeting moments where the now and eternity touch for the briefest of moments. The beauty of the person unobserved. Capturing that moment, which seems to encapsulate the person as a whole. The eternal quest for serenity. In that sense I try to peel back the layers of every subject and expose their core.
I was born into a family of builders, carpenters and fishermen with an eye for craftsmanship and beauty. Art is a second pursuit for most family members so from an early age I was stimulated to be creative. Surrounded by antiques, portraits drawn by my father, and family portraits at my grandparents resulted in a basic curiosity. Why was it that some portraits exude a balanced “silence” and others seemed “off balance”?
A keen interest in history and art history developed early on and resulted in pilgrimages to most of the major museums in Europe. As a result the art between de Middle Ages and the late 19th century has always been a fixture in life. Later in life I had the pleasure of living in Vienna, which has influenced me in more ways then one.
At 16, I was first brought into contact with oil and began a journey. I painted furiously to master the medium and develop my own techniques. Having no formal education in painting, I mainly study techniques to develop my painting as a craft.
Shifting between techniques between works, or even within works. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't.

I found your painting of H.L. Maurer. He is my grandfather. I am really surprised to find this painting on the internet. It looks like you used a black and white picture of him as a basis. Could you please tell me why you made this picture and if there is any relationship between him and yourself. Looking forward to your reply.
