we need more rants like that - especially in a disney brainwashed culture. I graduated from an art school and had dealings in both the illustration and animation departments and companies like disney and pixar are considered sacred.
I got into way too many fights with people about how they use and portray (or don't portray) women... it's good to know someone else thinks the same way ^^

Thank you! I'm glad people who think this way aren't as few and far between as I was starting to fear they were. If we all keep ranting, I'm sure we'll be heard.

I know! I was so worried when I read the replies to DTL's post that no one would pick up what needed to be said, but I was pleasantly surprised. Maybe not every one out there is a drooling Disney zombie. hope springs eternal!
Did you watch the Mickey Mouse Monopoly Docu in that Youtube link? I'll never see beauty and the beast the same again... faux feminism ... she's intelligent because she's reading a book, then goes on to marry a batterer... O_O; nice.

I haven't seen that documentary yet, though my friend had an interesting point about that. She mentioned how Belle's relationship with the Beast was actually a positive one, because she never returned Beast's affections until he had proven that he could control his temper and stopped taking it out on her. Of course the original story was pretty damn sexist, and was written as an argument for arranged marriages... "Don't worry girls, no matter how evil and angry he may seem to be, I promise you'll learn to love him no matter what!" So unfortunately the trappings of the original story might still be there. I'll have to watch that documentary though, it sounds really interesting!

the docu is excellent - not just for women's issues, but about race as well. Their final point about that it's not disney's stories, but size, power and inescapability (is that a word?) was really good. That disney could tell stories as it wanted as long as it was one of many small companies telling different stores.
Beauty and the Beast as a fairy tale is really sexist, but in its raw form has to be taken in context of the time and culture that created it. i think tin tin is one that gets picked on for being racist, but it wasn't created in our time or culture. we can enjoy the stories with the understanding that our morality has evolved.
Interesting take on BnB - I think that might have been how I understood it when I was a kid. now, with more experience i can't think that it ever happens that way - they're selling a lie that women can tame men and it's just not true (i've seen it...) it also teaches girls that they should stick out abuse for it improving, when it normally gets worse. the lesson should be belle leaving when the beast yells at her - no one deserves to be treated that way ^^

Those are very good points! I'll have to watch that documentary when I've slogged through all my midterm preparation this week, because that sounds really interesting. That's a very good point about Beauty and the Beast too. It's unfortunate that these stories are what we have as prime examples for what girls should be in our culture. The whole notion of "Disney princesses" has always bothered me, because the princess theme itself is a bit demeaning and shoehorns little girls into a role that society tells them is the best role they could achieve... that of simply being there and being pretty and appealing to men, and waiting for a guy to come rescue them. We're getting a bit better but we still have a long way to go.

no worries - good luck with your mid terms!
disney definitely targets children when they're the most vulnerable. I remember reading books and watching movies as a kid and not liking them and not knowing why or having the vocabulary to explain it. (don't get me started on the bridge to terabithia...) but because of that you can only see it as an example and not one of many, or something that can be challenged, especially when all media sources point to the same thing. disney teen media is especially abhorrent, as are barbies (and the movies) and bratz dolls and brat clones.
at least when I was a kid I had many media stories, from she ra and he man, lady lovely locks and disney - i saw everything and had the ability to choose which parts of the'type' suited me best instead of being that single stereotype girl.

I remember feeling the same way too! I could never articulate exactly why so many things I read and watched bothered me so much, until I got older and learned about sexism and how women are portrayed in the media. Then everything started clicking. I do remember though, as a child, I always gravitated towards stuff for boys because I knew that media for girls was not about having adventures and kicking ass and feeling powerful. I always preferred male characters in my favorite shows because the girls, I always felt, were so worthless and were satellite characters at best. And whenever it came to creating fan characters or characters for stories I'd make up, I'd always represent myself as a guy, because I knew at least somewhat consciously that males always had more agency than females. I'd constantly rant about the Disney princesses and Barbie dolls as well. XD
For most of my life my friends have all been guys, so I've always noticed the difference in the way I was treated. Especially when I was younger, I had to fight tooth and nail just to be noticed, and I had to have guy friends "vouch" for me before other guys would give me the time of day or listen to anything I had to say. Even then I knew I was being mostly ignored, and any time I tried to play with them, my female teachers would constantly take me aside and tell me to stop rough-housing. This being said while said guys are beating each other up. I wasn't very well liked by girls for not conforming, and once the guys started getting older too, my presence was less and less tolerable. I was pretty adamant though about rejecting "girly" things, and especially "girly" behaviors. Even today I still feel like I'm constantly having to fight to be taken seriously, and I'm in college. It's mind-boggling how much of an effect these things have on not just our childhood behavior, but how we all behave as adults.

I was actually just thinking about this after seeing some kids walk by while i ran to the bank and one of the boys was reading while walking, and i thought to myself, why isn't the girl reading too, instead of carrying her baby doll. then my next thought was that it's hard to rationalize telling a girl to read when most of the books out there sit in the matrix of the patriarchy. it would probably be really difficult to find a book that would satisfy my own criteria of balance between the genders, let alone one i would hand to a girl who doesn't have the vocabulary or processing ability (not to mention life experience) to understand why I chose that particular book.
I was a bit lucky, growing up with she ra and some of the other all female cartoons, lady lovely locks and rainbow bright. though they were't perfect and had their own issues with gender identity, the characters were still strong and the leads in their own world. so i think I saw it represented that women could be leads, and as media has shifted to boys it bothers me more that there isn't the same for girls just starting now. i had the princess of power, with a sword and a horse saving her world (in a dominatrix inspired outfit, but no one's judging ;D) and girls these days get bratz.
I can't say i got along with one gender over another, but gravitated to people with the same interests, be it a cartoon or science subject. though i get what you mean by not being taken seriously, i was a digi art bfa and i worked amongst the boys in the cave lab on our 3d animations - i was one of 3 girls in a class of about 20 students. it didn't matter if you knew more about an assignment, they wouldn't listen. one incident where I used mel script on a rig, while another student used set driven keys - they went to him for rigging issues, when i knew how to fix their stuff faster. cause i wasn't one of the boys they acted like i didn't exist. even though i was one of the only people to get their vrml world done on time with textures, sound AND particles. :3 LOL one of the kids had a problem with nesting sounds and they asked the prof - and he was all, she (me) just figured that out, go ask her. XD
these days i'm pretty loud and when i know my shit i'm not shy about it. >B}
