Quandtum In reply to Kiwiris [2013-03-12 22:47:08 +0000 UTC]

Hi and thanks very much !

For the characters I think you are interested in, I start with a free program called DAZ 3D @ [link] The free setup is a decent tool and comes with the basics you need to start making some images.

I typically take the models out of DAZ after they are roughly setup and bring them into Blender 3D, another free open source application @ [link] Blender has more advanced modelling and rendering tools (i.e. the Cycles renderer). The unfortunate complaint is that its interface is harder to learn, but as it's the one I learned first, I wouldn't know the difference. Blender does need more experience to run than DAZ though.

Fortunately, for that Blender has a huge community of users @ [link] and with that lots of excellent free training to help get started @ [link]

Learning everything can be work at times, but it's a whole lot of fun to be able to create an idea. Part puzzle, part art, it's been a fun hobby!

Actually, the Cycles engine is very good, I won't deny that... but you are mistaken about 3Delight, DAZ Studio's render engine. Cycles has never been used to render anything that I'm aware of in a major hollywood production. 3Delight's resume, however... well... see for yourself: [link]

oh please help me out.. I dowloaded DAZ 3D and I really don't get a thing at all.. I love the things you can make with it but I can't even put a basic in the program! Just only a circle.. If you have skype or something.. please help me.. My skype is Kiwiriss , and maybe you can show me some thing by teamview, I really want to learn this stuff.

I would start here : [link] The intro to 3D is good, but you might be more interested in starting @ "1.0 Intro to DAZ Studio". You don't need any of the pay tutorials, the free ones are good as DAZ wants you to be able to use their software (in fact the first one will probably get you over the initial difficulty). They've done a good job, I recommend starting there.

Likewise! Haven't seen you 'round BA in a while - guessing you've been busy?

On my end, things aren't too bad - going through a creativity drought at the moment (and a bunch of other things), but it's slowly starting to pick up again For instance, over the last week I've discovered the joys (and occasional annoyances) of using Linux Mint on my desktop - I'm loving it!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Quandtum In reply to MeshWeaver [2012-11-17 15:42:44 +0000 UTC]

Well, haven't done Mint myself. I like Gentoo but unfortunately am all Ubuntu these days. If the amount of Linux development I do for work lets up I could probably find the time to switch back to Gentoo! I'll have to through Mint into a Virtual Box tho and check it out!

Ya, haven't been around much, I have been on overload for last year and a half. There was a lot of overtime at work. I've also been doing freelance 3D work for mechanical designs (leads into CAD, I wish Blender could do more for the CAD scene), so there hasn't been a lot of free time for extra projects. I am hoping at the turn of the year tho things will lighten up.

Well, creative droughts just mean it's time to go outside and wander a bit, lots of stuff out there to provoke the imagination!

"Well, creative droughts just mean it's time to go outside and wander a bit, lots of stuff out there to provoke the imagination!"

Hmm...does Minecraft count?

Woah, sounds like a pretty intense year-and-a-half - awesome to hear about freelance though! (I've got my first coming up in a couple of days, actually).
About CAD, if I'm not mistaken there are some Advanced Modelling Tools currently in development which are supposed to help in a similar field - better snapping tools, cutting, and whatnot. Don't quote me on that though, I'd have to double-check the BA thread... I've kinda lost track of developments over the last couple of weeks Mechanical design sounds pretty cool too - I've yet to design or build anything like that in Blender myself, but it's been on my to-do list for a while now

Quick, random question about Ubuntu - are you using Unity? Or did you install Mate, or another like XFCE or KDE overtop of it? Just curious Unity's actually the main reason why I switched to Mint (that was before I learned that you could install other desktop environments)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Quandtum In reply to MeshWeaver [2012-11-23 12:52:34 +0000 UTC]

Good question (and one I love to answer)! I don't use unity, the nice thing about Ubuntu is you can install anything (and everything) else and still select it from the login screen. Like most everyone else Unity peeves me off (it's not bad, it's just not flexible enough to do what I want). Anyways, I install cairo-dock and use that instead [link] I love cairo! If you want to extend that even further you could also install gnomenu ([link] ), tho I don't use that. At any rate cairo is flexible enough to get the feel of any OS you like.

I would prefer to use Gentoo, the real reason I am in the Ubuntu camp is for the last year and a half now I have been doing embedded Linux development on ARM processors. We'll just say that keeps me toiled enough in complex stuff I need the host machine as candy-coated as I can get it (and easily maintained). The nice thing is I've become more proficient in Linux than I am in Windows these days that when I do actually boot back for something, I get all confused now if I need to do something serious. As a result I now just emulate everything I need in Linux.

I also evaluate most other distros by popping them into virtual box for running. Not sure if you every looked at Bohdi, but it's essentially Ubuntu with Enlightenment. They did a good job, but as a developer Enlightenment caused me some pains I had to drop it. I do have a few blog posts (I think) on how to fix some of the basic compatibility issues with Ubuntu.

By the way, I do like to blog on Linux stuff, if you ever have a question or need help and I can do a blog post on it, let me know! It started as my own personal notes for things I would forget or need to know to get set back up in case of a wipe, but now I would like to write more, I've rather enjoyed it.

Yeah, I've heard of Cairo - I actually installed Docky the other day, which is supposed to be similar, and although I haven't used it much yet I find it's really cool. Very MacOS-like, but multiple standard taskbars can run alongside it - loving it. I only wish I could pin Minecraft to Docky, but it's a Java-run jar file (sometimes run from Terminal), so seems it can't add those. Could be worse, I guess

I'm also using Linux a lot - in fact I haven't touched Windows 7 in two weeks, at least. Don't get me wrong, I really like Win7, but...I don't know, maybe the whole novelty of using Linux hasn't worn off yet. Not to mention I can pretty much customize almost anything I want relatively easily, if I decide to. You can apparently do some similar things in Win7 too, but you have to deal with the registry and whatnot...
There's also some big differences in UI-based workflow - whenever I switch back to Win7 or borrow another computer, even after only two weeks of Mint-usage I automatically try to move things to separate desktops, only to remember that Windows is the odd one out when it comes to those. I seriously love them

I just looked up Bodhi real quick, and it looks interesting - I might try it out on an older computer I'm "restoring", it also has Mint13 with Mate but I find it lags a bit. It's a dual-core Pentium 4 - didn't know they made those - with 1G of RAM, a brand-new GeForce 6200, 2 decent-sized HDDs and a lot of cables From what I can tell it was a gaming/multimedia system (the case is huge and heavy, and rather fan-happy). It used to have a ATI X800 Pro, but its cooling system broke and it would overheat after a few minutes, so I replaced it with the GeForce. I'm actually planning on doing a blog-post about that project too, if you're interested The only thing I worry about now, with any Linux distro, is GPU compatibility and drivers, but nVidia seems to be doing pretty good with those (I've heard countless times on BlenderArtists that AMD is having trouble)

Ooh, Linux blogging I just checked it out, and I see you've redesigned your whole site, looks good! I'll definitely be stopping by more often to read some posts - you'll probably see me pop up in the comments, haha

Zoroark-Void [2012-02-19 20:12:17 +0000 UTC]

Hi, I'm Zoroark-Void. I have been working on this story for about two years. It's a spin-off of the Kingdom Hearts video games series. (Hopefully you've heard of it.) It's about what happened after the end of Kingdom Hearts II. But enough about that.

I've been trying to get my hands on animation programs, but with no luck. I really wanted to animate some of my characters. I took notice of your animation skills, and browsed through your gallery. You are amazing good sir, and I was hoping if you would do a point commission. Sadly I only have 13 points, But that's all i can get right now. Would you look through my gallery, and see which character you would like to do, if you feel like you want to. Note me when you decide what to do, and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Thank you!

I haven't been doing too much 3D as of late (/grumble @ overtime @ work)... and a small back log of some projects, so I can't make any promises just yet, but I will check out your gallery and go from there. I am optimistic I will be able to start catching up (with my work) soon.

By chance i found your thread about CC problems... so i just thought you might like to see my similar item as .pat file, not free, but cheap! And without problems in the CC area, i would guess.
Anyway, your work is amazing, especially to 'old fashioned artists like me who are just learning PS :jo

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Quandtum In reply to anti-man9 [2011-12-25 03:57:16 +0000 UTC]

Actually yes. I had more but had to take a bunch down for rework (I mistook some of my texture licenses to be CC compatible and they weren't, such as the sword in this one [link] ). They'll be reworked and re-released as time permits. Pretty much all of my models get released to Blendswap [link] and the game related ones also get released to OpenGameArt.org [link] I have admittingly been starting to shift more towards game models, they make for nice short projects. I have also been working towards making clothing/armor conform in DAZ/Poser, but what I have achieved so far hasn't been release worthy. Thank you for the compliment and I truly hope they can help you in some way!
