Just take as many pictures as you want, different angles etc. & try different settings to see which ones you like best (of the same shot). Each camera seems to perform differently. Get to know your camera.
I am NOT a professional photographer. Most of my photos are just sharing of memories or reference photos (for paintings).
Alexander's Castle sound very interesting!

How did you get started in portrait/fashion type photography? I cant exactly go to art school, so i'm reading as much as possible. But i want to start buying equipment, etc. Any suggestions?

That's a big question.
I started with landscapes and natural light. I've never been to school but have taken several seminars, read many books, listened to many podcast, read lots of magazines, subscribe to a couple organizations/educational sites and I keep an eye on both commercial advertisement work and places like Model Mayhem and of course Deviant Art.
I think the best way to learn lighting is with continuous lighting and basic modifiers, it's also the cheapest way to start.

what do you mean by basic modifiers? Flashes and screens/reflectors? I'm a voracious reader, so I'm filling up on that - and I'm learning a lot about poses and composition from friends of mine - so anything i can gather is a big help - thanks for taking the time.

A modifier is anything that would change the light. Umbrella, reflector, gobo (blocks light) softbox, scrim, grid, snot, barn door, etc.
I think that for portraiture if one starts out with a single light source and a simple reflector they can learn and light lots. The single light source could be natural light but it's pretty hard to control, I'd start with a hot light/continuous/a light bulb in a reflector.
My favorite lighting book is called "Light, science and magic."
Shoot lots of pictures all the time

No problem - you do great work - I'm just getting started in photography, and retro/pin-up style is what i like - so i'm trying to find as many ideas and influences as possible - keep up the good work!
