In May of 2012, I decided that I wanted to learn how to draw and paint. I picked up some pencils and a copy of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards, and began to draw for the first time since my late teens.

I was already a fan of MLP:FIM since around the end of Season 1. Somewhere along the way, I suppose it was inevitable that I wound up drawing ponies. I bought a graphics tablet and started hanging out on Reddit's r/mlpdrawingschool . I've learned a great deal from the community there, and received a ton of good advice/critique. Most of all, I've learned that you have to constantly keep pushing yourself.

This DA profile chronicles my ongoing attempt to do just that. I don't post absolutely everything pony-related that I draw, but I do try to post the bad along with the good. I hope it might encourage others who are afraid of trying to draw to just give it a shot anyway. You win some and you lose some, but if you keep going, you'll get better. I firmly believe that with lots of time, practice, and dedication, anyone can become a genuinely talented artist.

In all seriousness, there's really nothing to it except to just sit down and start doing it. Well, that and being willing to accept critique.

You should stop by MLPdrawingschool , check out some of the guides (esp. the intro and basics sections), and give it a shot.

Now that you mention it, I'm not sure if I actually have any MLPDSers on my watch list. I just kind of assume that everyone submits anything they care about to the DA group, and I'll pick it up there. That may be a bad assumption on my part.

Nope, just freehand sketched side-by-side with the reference in SAI. I was trying to drill anatomy and show style into my thick skull.

The references were all pulled with the random function on the Pony Reference Booru .

Heh. I'm flattered, but I'm just some guy trying to develop some art skill. I got hooked on MLP:FIM and, well...I guess drawing ponies was kind of inevitable.
