# About me
Software developer, writer and game master, branching out into visual arts. I started using GIMP years ago for small photo alterations, then gradually moved through online tutorials into more advanced territory. Would like to create art for several space-themed games and apps, but I'm definitely still learning the ropes. Feedback and comments are greatly appreciated!:thumb691553535:

Just stopping by, gotta say I am in love with your planets they're so pretty
I am curious (as I am also a GIMP user) how do make your planet continents "wrap" around the sphere? I want to try it with my main world map but haven't quite poked at GIMP enough to figure how to do that

Sorry for the super-late reply!Β My method is destructive, so make sure you have saved flat layers of both your continent shapes and your planet texture before you do this.
1. Make a map.Β The map should be twice as large as the finished planet (e.g. if you want a planet that is 1000px in diameter, your map needs to be 2000px square).Β I often go one step further and make a full map that is 4000px wide by 2000px high, because then I can crop it in different places to get the best "globe" shot.Β With a square image, you only have one angle to work with.
2. After you've made your map, go to Filters -> Distorts -> Apply Lens.Β You'll need to make sure that your map layer has an alpha channel and that you set the background color to transparent.Β Again, *make sure you do this on a copy of your visible layer*!Β If your image is rectangle, crop it down to a square before applying the lens.
3. Now you have a globe-looking circular image.Β It works well for most applications.Β When you're satisfied with how it looks, re-size this new layer down by half to minimize any distortions caused by the lens effect.Β (e.g. your 2000x2000 px square layer will become 1000x1000 when you're done.Β That's why you have to start off so big).
Other methods I've used:
* Using NASA's G Projector tool to take a rectangular map and put it on a globe:Β www.giss.nasa.gov/tools/gprojeβ¦Β Fiddly, but helpful if you want to see what your full map will look like from different angles.
* Using GIMP's map to sphere (Filters -> Map -> Map Object -> Sphere), but it makes a *much* smaller image as a result.
