A little bit here, a little bit there works.
A big help is talking with a friend (or sibling) who writes good stories and won't judge you for the terrible plot holes and nonexistent story.
I was writing a story with the Alien Xephos headcannon (where he has a tail). I asked my brother for help and he critically analyzed me in such a way I realized I had written that something subconsciously knowing the exact reason why I wrote it, and I was able to make that part of the story much better.

Yea, I've been trying to work on it a little bit in my spare time.
Mhm, my brother would be a good person to talk to. He himself is writing a book, and (very rarely) we can sit and talk for hours about writing and such. Its one of the few times we get along quite well!
